The current issues are not the first example of the appalling communications by The Local. I hope that this time there will actually be some meaningful dialogue.

But even if otherwise ... There's no expectation on meeting the dude. He happens to be in Zurich and invited people to meet. What's wrong with that?

I think that answer has been given before in a better way that I could explain, but I believe the reason why people are concerned is: there is some serious disagreement with the way The Local is dealing with the EF. Some members, some of which have positively contributed a lot during the last years, would like to have some doubts, questions, opinions heard and answered.

As I see it, Paul is a representative of this company, not coming down to Zürich to drink a couple of beers with some friends-to-be. In one way it might look like a step forward to open relationship with the angry mob in the forum, but on the other hand it looks like a bone thrown to the angry dogs to shut them up for a while.

That is why, and I do agree quite profoundly, people are asking Paul to first address the concerns here in the Forum so everyone can see, and then approach smaller groups at a time.

It's an exclusive gesture in response to a much wider problem.

His answers on Grynch's Q&A thread will do more to inspire confidence amongst the wider forum than this cosy drinks session.

The problem lies with an online forum - surely the solution lies also online?
My point is this meeting doesn't necessarily constitute his way of addressing such valid issues, which should be addressed online as you say. It seems, according to some of you, he would have been better off not setting an event at all. But that seems just silly.

I appreciate the support of other members, but this isn't really a personal fight between me and HB, and I'd rather it didn't degenerate into that. We just happen to disagree on the wisdom of this particular 'event', that's all.

Us = those who can be in a bar in Zurich at 18:30 on a week night, which excludes almost all of the forum.

I know the EF began in Zurich, and I know there's a really solid and supportive hardcore of supporters of the EF who live in and around Zurich, but the EF is much bigger than that now.

That's my point. I'm sure he's a nice bloke and all, but to organise a little cosy chat with a tiny minority of the forum in a bar in Zurich really isn't the way to inspire confidence amongst the membership of a forum that now numbers several tens of thousands of people living throughout the country.

See Grumpygrapefruit's post above for a more intelligently written version of my argument if its my writing style to which you object.
I think I've said three times so far in this thread that I'm trying to meet as many people as possible next week and I'm happy to go to other cities to do that. Zurich is Wednesday night. So where would you recommend meeting on Thursday?

A poll might be in order.
  • Basel
  • Berne
  • Geneva
  • Lucene
  • St Gallen
  • Ticino
See you in Basel

If he came to Neuch it would be the easiest for all the main cities though

Re: Drinks evening (with founder of The Local)

The good thing - Paul has come on here and expressed an interest in meeting (he really has no idea - bless him) some of the "locals" - or long time freaks - that frequent the board.

The bad thing - he is doing this AFTER the T&C change announcement. I feel like someone who has had their arse groped by a stranger - and then bought a drink.

Right here, on the forum.

Seriously - I'm not trying to troll. Open up the chat zone or have a real time thread or something - some means for all members to speak to you, instead of just a select few.

Nobody will be able to complain about being left out of the loop if you've made yourself available in the same sphere that the rest of us interact.

Your answers on the other thread are a solid step forward in that regard. We've missed a proper 'boss' round here and it would improve the forum no end if you - or somebody else, for that matter - were more visible, more available on the forum day to day, rather than just when things blow up like this.

but before the T&C change. so more like being told by a stranger that he is going to grope your, arse and then offered a drink. you can always leave before the groping, before or after the drink

This arse groping, does it happen to you a lot? Suggest you dump the tutu and apply more lipstick and maybe a push up bra? It makes the touching grope so much easier to perform.

Re: Drinks evening (with founder of The Local)

Well this is a bloody mess isn't it.

A guy, from the Local - the owners of the forum, is coming down to Switzerland to have a chat and a beer with the members, and the thread ends up mostly consisting of comments from babies throwing there toys out of the pram because he isn't coming to "their" part of Switzerland, or complaining about how this is too late in coming, or whinging about this that and the other. Seriously, the vast majority of the membership is not much more than an hour away by train, and a 5 minute walk to the location.

I know as well as you that there have been problems with communication from the top down, and the bottom up, but looking at this thread those problems appear insignificant to the biggest problem of all, and that is the very apparent immature membership of this forum.

While I do get on with a few of the detractors of this thread, and will continue to do so afterwards, I'm quite glad those people have decided not to be present for this particular event, leaving those of us with open minds to hear what's being said.

This has to be the most disappointing response to a thread I've seen in a long time.

Re: Drinks evening (with founder of The Local)

If someone buys me a drink they can have a quick grope (singular) of my arse. If they buy me a whole bottle of wine they can put their hand on the inside of my thigh.

A meal will get a flash of cleavage - and a night out at the ballet will get you, well, I'm not cheap you know.

This lady likes men (who can't be gentle) to keep their hands entertained in their pockets.

Paul, if I were you I'd pick the other location on Wednesday and head to the Viadukt on Thursday. You will meet a LOT more of the EF that way

By the way, I think it's a nice gesture you're making and I didn't read the event as "come to this event in Zurich and Zurich only if you want the real truth about the EF".

There's no way you'll tell everyone that big secret you told to me and me alone is there?

On the other hand if Paul has more than an ounce of commercial nose in him, what he will have seen is that amongst the shite there is a heavy flow of presence and participation on this forum which should satisfy his presumed objective of deriving revenue from advertising on the site. Therefore he should not be disappointed but rather pleased with what he has seen.
But then I am a notorious optimist.
