On the other hand if Paul has more than an ounce of commercial nose in him, what he will have seen is that amongst the shite there is a heavy flow of presence and participation on this forum which should satisfy his presumed objective of deriving revenue from advertising on the site. Therefore he should not be disappointed but rather pleased with what he has seen.
But then I am a notorious optimist.
There is shite?

But don't forget that there are an awful lot of people on EF who will be feeling left out in the cold because of this.
Seriously? It's a nice gesture given the maelstrom of crap these folks have been getting over what should have been a real non-event. I'm surprised you didn't bang on him over it being school holiday as well since folks like me with a child are out of town.

I'm sorry I won't be able to make it but think it's awfully nice these folks are trying to make some peace with those who are concerned about the change in ownership.

Re: Drinks evening (with founder of The Local)

I think, if I may be so bold () what some people might be trying to say is that while Paul coming to Switzerland is a lovely gesture, and while drinks are always nice, what might be most helpful is for the general thrust of Paul's new involvement in the forum to be some sort of forum-wide availability, to answer questions and such like. He's done this of course, and I think the point is that the little thread he started to answer questions is actually much more helpful than the drinks (nice as they very well will be). He could also do a live web chat at a specific time (for example) and could (for example) schedule one hour every month to do the same, so that any and all who want questions asked, can ask them.

Re: Drinks evening (with founder of The Local)

More than any of the T&Cs, any of the faults in announcements or any of Ouchies LOLcats, this thread in itself has made me question why I am here.

What a load of preening, self important, diva behaviour has been seen here since the guy did what you had asked him to do and talk to you - answering questions on a thread and showing up in town. If I were him, I'd tell you all to stuff it.

I'm going to play with my 1 month old son now......at least when he whinges noisily, something can be done to solve it.

Yup completely agree, and the Q thread was my idea. To provide a list of questions to answer so I'll take the credit thanks.

I was trying to funnel the loonies into a constructive pattern of Q+A . It appears I failed.

Complete failure of politeness, common sense and generally giving the guy a break, I'm seriously disappointed with some people on here who I have a lot of respect for.

He is trying to address the issues (no matter how small is welcomed) and for one I give him credit for that and I'm trying to encourage Paul to take part not return to Stockholm with a idea the member are complete lunatics.

Give yourselves a pat on the back <morons> you know who you are. )o(

Right here, on the forum.

Seriously - I'm not trying to troll. Open up the chat zone or have a real time thread or something - some means for all members to speak to you, instead of just a select few.

Nobody will be able to complain about being left out of the loop if you've made yourself available in the same sphere that the rest of us interact.

Your answers on the other thread are a solid step forward in that regard. We've missed a proper 'boss' round here and it would improve the forum no end if you - or somebody else, for that matter - were more visible, more available on the forum day to day, rather than just when things blow up like this.
I thought Paul said he didn't want to do a "formal meeting" initially, just a meet up with drinks to introduce himself. Afterwards a more formal meeting like a webinar or chat or whatever you call it. What's so difficult to understand, or are egos are too big?

Re: Drinks evening (with founder of The Local)

On a slow Wednesday afternoon, I have been following the thread with mild fascination. I will try to make it along to the drinks if not distracted by moving flat () or by German Conversation Group (also ).

My thoughts are not too complicated, beyond thinking that it's probably more likely that Paul's trip is business-related (ie coming to meet advertisers) and setting up the drinks is just a nice thing to do whilst he's here to "connect" (touch base??) with the community.

I also think that the goal of the company (beyond making profits of course...) is quite cool. Per the email that Deep Purple received from the company, it would seem that they're trying to set up forums across Europe. I think it would be great to have a network of people across Europe using sites like this. It really has been such a help for so many people who are new to the countries (and I know that I have also found some useful info on Toytown ). Kudos to the guy for having the guts & entrepreneurial drive to try to create a trans-European network like this.

As an aside...do we even know that Paul will be attending the drinks event? I do not see his acceptance in the list of attendees....

So. Anyway. It seems that if you go to Lausanne, Glarus or Geneva on the Thursday and just leave your credit card number behind one of the Basel bars then everyone's happy.

Well, it's very likely, as I plan to skive, err I mean take an official break from work on Wednesday and what better way to piss away the day than to travel to an identikit Swiss town and drink there instead of Basel!

Re: Drinks evening (with founder of The Local)

I kinda feel that nitpicking over what city Paul (who seems awfully patient and outgoing, plus I think he got the message about what should have been and should be discussed) is going to organize a meet up is about something else. Why all this, beats me. What is this, an old gripe? Is Paul supposed to make as many meet ups as there are big cities? Why be so communist. To meet up in cities with the biggest member base, in two days that probably correspond with how much time a visit from Sweden probably has, sounds great. This reminds me fights over tiny details, where we miss the most important fact. I feel, compared to other communities I am a member of, things here are actually very democratic, and the recent flukes more learning curves than some evil ways of assumed biz minds that live in CH. There is an army of us who want to do things right, knowing that is reassuring. I have never met any owners or employers of other internet forums I am part of, nor had a chance to express myself on the theme of legal stuff of forum rules face to face, actually nor online, since things were just simply done, so right now, I am pretty psyched. Paul, ever since of his appearance here, has been constructive. It seems he is waiting for suggestions, more than wanting to impose some impossible stuff on us. Let him first make himself to feel at home, in order to move on to hotter topics.

I wrote some time ago about the thoughts of not leaving our community for some ego reasons, achieving nothing by it. I feel the same way over sabotaging an attempt to communicate. Is this some old gripe? If we get Paul on board, wouldn't we have bigger chance to have things actually fixed for us? Is this some kind of payback and still grieving over a forum, that has been sold? Get over it, chaps, and let's keep the communication open. I don't think we need an apology for anything that has happened, personally. Forums get sold. Rules updated. Sure things could have been done differently, but something tells me people just simply relied on some other folks hoping they would do work professionally which could have been wrong. It happens all the time. No need for theatrical guilt trips coz we love to post and love our little virtual village.

Focusing on positives of the meet up will be beneficial also for the folks that live in further away communities and all the other places, instead of using them as an excuse to stop what seems to be a healing process. Paul won't travel from a village to village like some local politician or postal bus. Why should he.

What if there is a desire to first establish a personal contact, just to be able to resolve things better afterwards? Wouldn't it make sense? Wouldn't a friendly gesture of a really awesome venue and free beer be enough of a good will sign? Why shoot it down to harp even more. It does not look so evil and capitalistic, to be honest, and I would be the 1st ex Marxist to be alerted.

So....let's remain positive. We can always readjust laters.

That's a tricky one. All the email addresses that bounced when we sent out the new T&Cs will be marked as 'inactive' so we don't mail them again. But we don't want to delete them as people may still use them to sign in.

I don't think it would be a good idea to resend the email but the terms are here: http://www.englishforum.ch/xtra/pages/termsofuse.html

As for the way we implemented the T&Cs - it was a bit silly of us not to post about it first. What happened was this: we asked a lawyer in Germany about some changes to the impressum - and added the open question 'is there anything else we should think about' that is probably best to be avoided when talking to lawyers.

The upshot was that given the number of users on Toytown Germany and EF, we were advised to get a proper set of terms and conditions - which the lawyer duly produced for us. And we were told that the best-practice way to introduce new terms was to email everyone with 30 days' notice before they take effect. Email was the recommended channel since the majority of registered users won't log in during those 30 days, so wouldn't have seen a post on the forum itself.

Of course, it would have been the easiest thing in the world to have posted them first...
