*The times shown may change, depending on DST settings
City/Town: Geneva
Event Type: Drinks/Bar
Meeting Point: Mr Pickwick

My name is Paul and I'm the founder of The Local. I'm meeting a few members in Zurich on Wednesday 19th October, and will be in Geneva on Thursday 20th October. If anyone is available it would be great to meet up.

I'm no expert on Geneva drinking establishments but someone kindly suggested that we meet at Mr Pickwick, which has hosted EF meetups before:

Mr. Pickwick's Pub
80 rue de Lausanne
1202 Genève

I'll be there from 18.30 - hope to see you there. It looks like a big place - does anyone know if we need to reserve space, or if there's a particularly suitable place to gather?

Much previous discussion on the subject of meeting up here.
RSVP'd Yes: 5 (4 members and 1 guests)
  • Paul at The Local
  • MusicChick - Hope I don't have to translate for everyone, heh. A bit dejavu after wedn night, I guess, but let's proudly represent.. :)

RSVP'd No: 6

Glad to know Paul's trip was appreciated but a bit sorry to learn so few people attended after a fair number made a hue and cry about not being represented outside Zurich. Oh well.

Turn out might have been better if the event had been planned ahead earlier I suppose, to be fair. all the same, it was encouraging to note that Paul went out of his way and made a date for Geneva.

Seems that it was just a bad timing thing; there aren't that many EFrs in the region, and a bunch of the forum regulars who one might have expected to show up seemed to be truly indisposed. I really do appreciate Paul coming and getting to meet at least one new face though .

Re: Geneva drinks evening (with the founder of The Local)

It's ok, not all events get filled up even in busy EF regions..Next time people won't be as shy, I am sure.

We should have some activities coming up, the member base is not soooo thin and weak, just have to organize with a bit more planning. Represent, people, represent.

Another GE lunch might be convenient for some, especially for those who commute into the city. I will announce our old long going GE Stitch&Bitch again soon, some family events (Signal de Bougy sounds good for this weather), let's wake up out Morges Book Club and Poetry Club, when do people read but now , some mild hiking would be cool (St. Cergue, for example), the winds seem good for flying kites, board games evenings are always fun, and any other suggestions are welcome..

Re: Geneva drinks evening (with the founder of The Local)

Can I ask who exactly from Geneva was "whinging" about "not being represented"? I didn't read the other long Paul visit thread, but the only one I see looking through the RSVPs is grynch, and knowing his posts, he was probably doing it in jest.

For me the facts are simple:

1) There's less of us.
2) Most of us truly couldn't make it.
3) We'd rather events happen organically for fun reasons without there being an element of "come meet our overlord". Why take the forum that seriously?

As I said in the economisto thread, I'm just looking for a place to post and the forum drama about T&C and whatnot really seems quite silly. As long as they're not selling our private info to telemarketers, which I felt safe they're not doing, I think we're going to be fine. I don't see that many people whining about being misrepresented, it just may be that people from Geneva don't take this forum as seriously and don't make it as big a part of their lives as some Zurchers do.

I don't mean for this post to sound confrontational, it's not, but I'm genuinely puzzled where all this business about "having our chance and blowing it" is coming from. Did Paul come to Geneva because it was more convienient for him or because someone genuinely made a huge deal about us Romands not being represented in the other thread? If it's the latter, I'm sorry. If the people that did that actually didn't show up, then that was douchy of them.

For what it's worth, if he only had two nights in Switzerland, he clearly should have done the meetups in Zurich and Basel, IMO, since that's where most of the members are. I don't see why he allowed himself to be swayed on this for even a second. Just a simple example: some Basel members were actually ready to go to Zurich. You will never get the same commitment from Geneva (and surroundings) people on a Thursday night. That doesn't mean we should be completely marginalized for it, but somehow being disappointed that so few us showed up is being completely blind to the realities of the forum.

I'm sorry I missed the event and I'm relieved to find out that Paul is an actual living and breathing human being.

Re: Geneva drinks evening (with the founder of The Local)

People did come from Basel and even Olten to the ZH meet up.

I understand the move to meet at another end of the country, exactly for the reason of EF not being represented as much. I would do the same. The interesting thing is, the folks who made it to the GE meet up weren't even Geneva based, but all living outside of the city and with a schedule packed to the gills. I think we do need more time for events, for sure.

Good posting, Ruskov.

Re: Geneva drinks evening (with the founder of The Local)

I'm really sorry I couldn't make it, I wanted to meet Paul as I do care about EF and have considerably enjoyed my time here (and still intend to).
MusicChick conveyed my apologies on my behalf.

EF has been a wonderful source of info and friendship.
It's not virtual, it's real.
Kind place, kind people. The rest is of no importance.

Thank you

I didn't mean to give the opposite impression. I'm not referring to the people, I'm referring to the drama surrounding the T&Cs and such, which Paul's visit was primarily meant to address, as far as I understood.

I'm so sorry Russ, I wasn't referring to your very well written message.
Mine was purely ego-centric as I was giving my personal opinion regarding the people I've had the pleasure to meet. Real kind decent people, nothin' virtual about the lot of them.

cheers

More than willing to 'share' what Paul had to say (but MusicChick was the one taking notes).
I'm up for a fish and chips lunch next week, as long as it's not Thursday as I can't get home again easily (Hubby is usually out for the evening)!
