Oh this sounds like sooo much fun - wish I was living closer to ZH.

That's probably what I miss the most... This part of Switzerland (Ticino) is beautiful but culinary it just doesn't offer a lot

Have fun!
BTTR, if you have a car and ever feel like you want to take a quick ride over to the border and into my hometown, Varese, I'll tell you some good spots where to find cool foods in the area.

I agree with you though that there is not much culinary diversity down there...

Re: Foods of the World - Zurich - Shopping Tour Sat 22.10.2011

Sounds AMAZING. We moved to a new flat last weekend so there's a long to do list for Saturday (mainly centred around Dübendorf and Dietlikon....YAWN!), but I think shopping is permitted

I will liaise with the bf re timings and will let you know asap both for shopping and for lunch.

Thanks for organising Sweetpea

Please don't forget to send us your mobile by PM. I don't want to end up stranded in the HB, lost among the many hungry pedestrians...

Re: Foods of the World - Zurich - Shopping Tour Sat 22.10.2011

Swisspea and all, I had a fantastic time! Thanks so much for organizing and for the outstanding company. If Swisspea is kind enough to organize another one, I highly recommend it - the places visited have unbeatable prices and an outstanding variety, plus it's a lot of fun to just browse through if you don't buy anything.

Here a picture of what I bought: rice noodles, red lentils, banana chips, cassava flour (from Rwanda), coconut oil, sundried tomatoes, very cheap liver and lamb at the Turkish store, fresh figues, pumpkin, labneh cheese, palm hearts, baby corn, soba and udon noodles, shrimp dumplings, kimchi, seaweeds, dried mushrooms, mole (Mexican specialty from Puebla), horchata mix, and pickled nopales (cactus).

NOM NOM NOM. Happy cooking and eating!

P.S. I also bought two Sicilian arancini, but they didn't make it home because I ate them on the road

Re: Foods of the World - Zurich - Shopping Tour Sat 22.10.2011

Thanks everyone!

I went home with - tapioca chips from Kerala, indian spices, puffed rice to make gluten-free crumbs, gluten-free hoi sin sauce, pad thai sauce, pandang curry sauce, yellow curry sauce, 1kg coconut milk powder for 11chf, rice noodles, baklava, beautiful seedless grapes, two packets of chinese prawn dumplings, and a stomach full of wonderful korean food.

We're having hoi sin chicken with rice for dinner...

Swisspea.

Re: Foods of the World - Zurich - Shopping Tour Sat 22.10.2011

Many thanks to Swisspea in organising this and sharing her find, it is really good to find all these lovely shops and the price is amazing. You can indeed eat rather well with a reasonable budget in Zurich.

The shops are amazing but even more so are the companies, thank you ladies of your company for such a lovely Saturday morning!

Hi Guys

Sounds really interesting, dont know if anyone's been to the Mexican shop on josefstrasse.

It has a crazy amount of chilli sauces if you're into that kind of thing!!!

So when is the next meet up?

Re: Foods of the World - Zurich - Shopping Tour Sat 22.10.2011

Nice!!

I work with a Mexican girl and she introduced me to "Mole"

Not the animal but the spicy sauce for meat dishes which also includes chocolate!!

Being from that side of town, there's alot of ethnic shops, a bit further down is a Middle Eastern (Lebanese?) where you can buy halloumi - couldn't find it in Co-op or Migros.

Will try to catch the next one!

It was part of my bag yesterday. I got halloumi cheese to grill from the Turkish shop.

Re: Foods of the World - Zurich - Shopping Tour Sat 22.10.2011

Being a foodie living in Winti I from time to time go on a Zürich "food run" it starts in front of the Hauptbahnhof, then continues towards the back:

Japanese / Korean - Yumi Hana, Schützengasse 7
Mexican - El Maiz, Josefstrasse 23
Turkish / Middle Eastern - EGE Import, Josefstrasse 53
Indian / African - India Supermarket, Joseftrasse 91 (great for fish/shrimps!)

Why I'm living in Winti and not in the Josefstrasse is beyond me.

I used to go to the Nishi Japan shop near Irchel but Yumi Hana's selection is nearly as good, and they're easier to reach; not to mention the unfriendly old lady at Nishi's that refuses to speak Japanese to me.

Re: Foods of the World - Zurich - Shopping Tour Sat 22.10.2011

There is a Chinese Grocer at the Tram 4 end of HB between levels. Being in HB, they open on Sunday as well and they are a branch of the one by the Oerlikon Banhof. I think they are Thai owned and got good selection. The one in Oerlikon is bigger. However, there is another one that I think is Vietnamese owned further up in Oerlikon Zentrum by Hotel Oerlikon/UBS and they got a much better selection on sauces, noodles as well as Japanses ingredients (amongst other things). They also got a cafe next door that got wonderful smell coming out. I not yet tried but will do so soon!

There is also a Turkish Shop that bake their own bread with an excellent Butcher on site at Tramstrasse. With a busy market on every Saturday morning as well, I just live in Zurich Food heaven!
