City/Town: Zurich
Event Type: Other
Meeting Point: Kasernenstrasse 2, 8004 Zurich

My dreams come true...a diner in Zurich! I was talking about this topic with some coworkers today, and then saw this thread - thank you chiguy!!!

The place seems cool from the website. Address:

Helvti Diner
Kasernenstrasse 2
8004 Zürich

Who is stuffing their face with me?

P.S. This week on a Thursday because I am exploring the former DDR over the long weekend.

P.P.S. NEWBIES VERY WELCOME, DON'T BE SHY!!! And for the "oldies" - "hiking in Grindelwald" is not a valid excuse to skip!
RSVP'd Yes: 10 (7 members and 3 guests)
  • suemck2 - been missing real Diner food ever since I got here
  • prof. taratonga

  • Sagitta

And raw milk Cheddar... all the way from the Viadukt . I wish I could make it.
If the place is worth it, we can always make "A Taste of the USA - Part 2", ya know...

So our taste of the USA has Canadian beef and English cheese.

Maybe the buns are American? The ketchup better be!

The magic (and wonders) of globalization

Seriously, I called it "Taste of the USA" because to me a diner, in whatever part of the world it is, always brings back the wonderful memories of roadtrips in the USA (most often a stop at a diner was the preferred/only food choice while on the road) - like while on our way to Vegas with my dad, stuck in the middle of the desert, or driving through the swamp (ehm, pardon, the bayou) in Louisiana, or down highway 1 along the coast of California with my brother.

Sigh...memories...

I can taste the ketchup already.

I hope the burgers come with salad and fries likes the sandwiches do (not mentioned on the menu).

I guess tomorrow will be my one allowed environmental disaster day: beef, bad enough as it is, shipped all the way from home.
You'll get what the Brits call a salad, but what everyone else would call a garnish. Fries and salad are side orders, as there are options if you're not into Fries or er, salad. They also do a mean BLT, which may side step the whole Beef is Bad angst...

Re: A Taste of the USA - Lunch in Zurich

Ok...before I disappear from the radar and delve into "numbers craziness" for the next 10 hours or so...let me start by saying a big THANK YOU to all who came - newbies and oldies. It was great to see you/meet you all, it is always a pleasure and you're cool

Now onto the restaurant...quite full, but we had a reservation, and squeezing in a bit, we were fine.

Forgivable sin: my dark-chocolate milkshake was a bit liquid (definitely less thick than a "North American style" milkshake), but nonetheless it was very tasty and I liked it.

Unforgivable sin: I like my meat as rare as possible, and I asked for a burger accordingly. I got a very well done burger instead and someone else got my burger probably. Now, ok that we were a big group, but if you are serious and you take the trouble of asking the clients how well done they want their meat cooked, well, keep track and don't scr** it up! It might be an honest mistake, but I am sorry to say that it kind of spoiled my meal a bit. Ok, I am not sorry to say - for that price, don't scr** it up!

My conclusion is: I should have listened to my gut feeling and gone with a Dr Pepper and a pastrami sandwitch instead. If I happen to be there again, I will try this option. However, I definitely won't go out of my way to go back to this restaurant!

P.S. FYI, I had a much tastier burger last Saturday at the Oliver Twist pub in the Niederdorf, for a fraction of the price

Re: A Taste of the USA - Lunch in Zurich

Thanks for organising it, very enjoyable. I agree with you re. asking how much you want the thing cooked and then giving you the wrong one!

The burger I rate much better than the one I had at the James Joyce a few weeks ago. Actually I really enjoyed my burger However the BBQ sauce I found dreadful, everything else fine (condiments for the burger were just to my - but not my trousers, that now sport a nice yellow mustard stain - taste).

Anyway, back to work...

p.s. almost forgot - of course the highligh of it all was the outstanding mature cheddar that topped the burger - if I only I knew their supplier and could somehow buy some

Re: A Taste of the USA - Lunch in Zurich

Burger was good. Sauces were embarrassingly bad - bbq is mayo/ketchup cocktail and chili sauce is Asian sweet and spicy. And you shouldn't have to pay extra for fries. Heinz ketchup was available and free.

Frederica's milk shake was just chocolate milk.

Overall impression: good burgers but a bit too pricey with fries included. Having said that, I got the angus burger from Canada. With Swiss beef, the price would be Zurich standard. Still prefer Zic-Zac burgers.

Re: A Taste of the USA - Lunch in Zurich

the BLT was dry (my punishment for not having gopne for something with british cheese in it), service indifferent and slow, but the company was awesome!

thanks federica and everybody else for making me forget my almost fatal domestic accident (I got home safely, after all)

looking forward to the next venue!

Frankly, she bit her lip and whispered "Sorry" on the way out. I often get this with waitresses: they kinda get distracted by me. It goes with the turf when you're incredibly hot. Better than she ever even knew. Hot female customers usually get superlative service so sorry girls. Take one for the Gipper.

Grazie, Fè. Quando siamo partenza corsi di Italiano per principianti?

hot female customers usually get superlative service from hot male waiters and/or when in company of hot male customers... so maybe we do need to do something about this next time?

and we certainly need to do something about your italian, uncle max - but let me recover from my brain injury first... (you know, for us women it takes a bit longer)

Ach, it's natural for men to be quickly done. Come forth Lazarus! And he came fifth and lost the job.
