Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football Zurich

what has happened? bombed the ball much in the canal?
think about "boat damage" coverage!?

by the way, big announcement today: i think i found a solution for the winterseason

http://www.hallefueralle.ch/index.ph...d=10&Itemid=20

dunno if it has been discussed yet?

the deal is, that we would pay roughly 35CHF per hour, by 8-12 people a reasonable fare. i think it is possible to plan things out as we do here, reserve the field (maybe for a full month in advance?) and unless we dont get a team together, we could cancel it.

i think, its a fair coup, but i want to make sure if you guys are willing to pay (7-12 chf/person, depending on the number of players)? then i would go and call them to check things out. a colleague of mine lives in Stäfa. he likes to play footy and even though he isnt/dont might be with us all sunday, he could arrange the local fare, i guess.

the biggie is, that regular events take place on sundays. so its maybe only possible for us to kick around on the late sunday evenings, 4-9 pm.

meanwhile i have written to a couple of schools around the canton.
simply saying: were reasonable people, we want no stress or trouble, we want to play football, please gimme feedback to sort things out (contact person, spot-check, possible obligations etc.), if it would work out.

i am looking around in rüschlikon, kloten, rümlang, küsnacht, meilen, zollikon, stäfa every village to get to by 5 train-stops from zürich.

is that ok with you guys? any requets, proposals?

Still representing the 'play on a grass pitch in the rain with gloves on' lobby but open to any reasonable offer...

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football Zurich

i´m lobbying for the grasspitch too, but...playing on snow will leave us all crippled at the end, dont you think? so as long as we can play on a pitch with grass on, ok. snow/ice=hall.

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football Zurich

So .... lets do some math

35 CHF per hour
2 hours per sunday

That makes 70 CHF per week

a fall-winter season has 26 weeks

That makes a total of CHF 1820.- for the season

way over the CHF 500.- per season twice a week I proposed at the Kantonschulle Enge, 3 weeks ago....

Sure that School is closed on weekend, but we could do it 2 hours on a weekday or search for another school near the city.

I hope the indoor place at the school is still available

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football Zurich

Here's my two penneth-worth:

We need to establish which months we should aim to play indoors. 26 weeks is waaaaay over the top. We should aim to play outdoors, on the pitch we have for 9 months a year, in my opinion.

Let go indoors for the 3 scariest months of the year. Say mid-November to mid-February. For example Sunday 18th November - 17th February thats 13 weeks (excl. 23/12).

This is a good compromise between the Uncle Max camp of 'lets play in the cold', and the rest of us who have our doubts about how many Sunday's we'd actually be able to play, once the weather really starts to turn.

Another thing is that after years of playing five-a-side I'd say that, although I'm not against booking a place for two hours, actually one hour of play with no breaks is more than sufficient. You turn up before, get changed, have the sides picked before you get on the court, play for your hour non stop, get showered, changed, and off to the pub. Easy peasy.

I'm personally in favour of keeping things as close to the arrangements now as we can. Its working out REALLY well, and frankly I'm scared of change. Its not just the Sunday afternoon is a great time for footy - the Sunday social thing we have going is cracking too. Would this work as well during the week? Well, I have to say that personally I have language school Tue and Thu (as does Andrew, and the Canadian guys who turned up recently). I know that Tim and Kev (who are cast iron regulars) often work late during the week. You can obviously rule out Friday because people make other plans.

Obviously we need to canvass opinions from the core of players that have made this thing work this year - because without getting the likes of Alex, Dominic, Kev, Dave, Tim, Rob, and Jim (sorry if I've forgotten anyone) onboard this thing is dead in the water.

I'm told this site has sports halls listed in CH. http://www.sportstaetten.ch/
Can someone multilingual could take a look and see if there's anything useful please? Thanks.

I'll PM some of the other guys and see if we can get some more contributions to the debate. And despite my opinions above, if enough people are dead set on playing during the week then I'll make sure I'm there - but I'm personally not convinced its the best option.

Oh and one more thing - I'd say that we've got about 10-12 who would be planning to play, most, if not all weeks over the winter - personally I'd say lets all put some money up front, and try to book a hall for as long as we can. We could then charge casual players slightly over a 10th of the hall cost - and put this forward towards keeping the hall booked, or buying a new footy or two. If we were to just split the costs every Sunday, then you have a bad week in terms of numbers, and the loyal few that turn up end up getting stung. We can do without this.

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football Zurich

i absolutely agree with adrian!

i think we can play at basteigasse as long as we dont have ice/snow lying around. go, buy some warmers and you'll fine! if theres a service keeping the pitch ice-free...id try to have a go even when ist colder. never did that, would try it out?!

anyway:
i have scrolled through sportstaetten.ch and to the listed schools, gemeinden (the ones i have stated above) i have written to. absolutely difficult to get a place! they will never hand out a key copy to us and insist havin the hauswart keeping an eye on us all day. no way one is coming on sunday for 2hours. up to now 1 response, more to come (i hope) the result i could tell by now but optimism dies at last.
there are some more obligations they have told me but i dont want to bother you guys with that. its dead right from the start at kantonsschule Rämisstrasse. most of these schools on sportstätten dont offer footy in their halls! so i have just written to those who posted that they do.
(clubs and associations are clearly preferred-> localism )

generally i would dearly keep the sunday up for this, because i could never regularly say im in every e.g. wednesday. it would turn out more complicated to get a team together. dead sure.

i think adrians "season" is very reasonable, 13-15 sundays is a number to deal with.

concerning costs: the best naturally would be if we could book 13weeks in advance, but pay only when we were making use of it. if its not possible without putting money in the "school/gemeinde-pot" beforehand, id be up to pay my contribution. if adrians system will work, im fine with it.

ok, i think it would be a good idea if you'd take a look at sportstaetten.ch, check the possible villages/gemeinden in canton zurich and let me know which one your willing to travel to. then i can pick up the fon and call them directly then email takes these slowhands to long to reply to.

its a fookin effort, but i'd take it on! i want to keep the ball rollin'!

I guess we have to think of it in terms of total travel time from Zurich HB. Anything upto 30 minutes from HB to the venue (including any walking time) would be fine for me. If we were to say 15 minutes on the tram or train - that opens it up quite a bit. Which areas/cantons would this make available? I know that on the train I get to Zug everyday, you can get about as far as Thalville in 15 minutes.

So far we only have one possibility, and thats:
http://www.hallefueralle.ch/index.ph...d=10&Itemid=20 (thanks Alex)

If we could find a couple more we could go on a bit of an expedition and see what the facilities are like.

Incidentally, 35chf per hour seems like a bargain to me, especially if the courts are decent.

Thanks to Alex for 'grasping the nettle'.

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football Zurich

If we really consider how many weekends it will be too terrible to play, I don't think it's going to be that bad.

I say we keep it outdoors - there surely won't be too many weekends of snow over the winter in central Zurich. From what I've heard we might miss two or three sessions, but it's pretty variable. For the days where it's just too icy to play we can just roll up to Paddy O'Reilly's for some winter warmers.

I've asked around, and the general opinion is that if we're playing in the city and don't mind a bit of cold rain, then we can keep on truckin'. I think that puts me in the Uncle Max 'Play till yer balls freeze off' camp. Of course, southern softies may well have a different opinion.

Trouble is, it was only a bit damp at the weekend and we had people slipping over - I can't remember how many times, but it was certainly more than once or twice.

That said - if the indoors thing turns out to be more hassle than its worth, then the outdoors thing is a decent fallback.

Lets continue to investigate indoors - but we can always decide against it if its too incovenient or expensive.

I know you are from newcastle where you are considered a girl if caught wearing a jumper when the temperature is still above 0° but its gonna get mighty cold here in winter.
If its anything like Munich expect a good few weeks of snow and -10 temperatures.
I think the hall sounds like a good idea if we can get enough people to commit to it upfront.
Having a dig around now for venues

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football Zurich

yeah, if we can get an indoor pitch...we're in.
if not/too much hassle-> basteigasse.

gronks right, but the pitch is wet=slippery in autumn/winter.
its unpleasent n risky.

ok, i think stäfa, rüschlikon, zollikon, küsnacht, meilen, herrliberg, horgen, oberrieden, au, schlieren, utikon, opfikon, wallisellen, talwil, rümlang, kloten, regensdorf are places id say that are commutable by train, tram or in connection of both. 30min time id say is ok for me, much more is/becomes really a pain in the ass.

my idea was, that a corps de diplomatique go and see the authorities of the village/school/gemeinde and we have a talk, say who we are, what we want etc., just that they see we are reliable and we could get a key handed over for some
small school gym with goals. thats how it went in germany. but no way this going to happen unless someone knows someone in charge.

i dont know if its that simple, but if one is handing in copy of passport, insurance(s), etc. and if every player is insured n stuff, it would be easy to have a go. if things go wrong, theyd still be able to cancel this.

mates from work do have a key for a sports hall. dunno who oragnized it, but it is in wollerau. its only possible to get there by car, because its 30min by train, and lets say 15-25min by foot from the station. and thats estimated, because i went there by car once...

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football Zurich

Here's 9 that I expect might put some money up front for a hall.
Adrian, Uncle Max, Tim, Dave, Kev, Brendan, Rob, Jim, Alex.

We've also had a few newbies in recent weeks who might go for it:
Nelson, Evans, The New Kev.

Maybe we can expect to get 10 investors.

It would be great if we can play indoor for 3-4 months and I agree with the idea of "investors". Did not have time to check the locations yet but if we manage to find a place that is available at the preferred time, affordable and within 30 min from Hbf then we are good I think.

Btw if you guys are still interested in the Golden Moose Tournament in Amsterdam, the event date is November 24th.

Robert

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football Zurich

Lads....for what its worth here is my view.

I'm definitely on for getting an indoor pitch or even an outdoor austro pitch that has a surface specifically for football. I can safely claim to be as hardy as the next bloke when it comes to weather but I've played on those netball surfaces too many times and seen too many bad injuries.

I'm surprised someone didn't get injured last Sunday, the dew from the trees above doesn't help and the weather is only going to get worse.

-Personally I think Sundays are the best options (I also work late unfortunately)...although maybe Monday night could be a sneaky option
-I will ask guys in work if they know of any sports clubs, schools etc with a spare pitch
-The cost shouldn't be an issue... chf35 is a steal and I have no problem throwing money into the kitty
-30min distance from Zurich is reasonable. Also if it is not near a train station, I'm planning on getting an old car/jeep next week so can easily pick 3 lads up & drive there. Maybe a few others can do the same.
-Also 1 hour for the match is more than enough if, as Adrian said, you're ready beforehand. We have a bad habit of strolling up & not getting going for 30 min(I'm one of the worse culprits) and we don't need a break in the hour and no river for me to jump in to!!

Will get back tomorrow with any updates from the guys in work.

Jim

And Rob....good to hear you're alive after Sunday in Paddy O'Reillys!!...I'd still be on for Amsterdam.

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football Zurich

How about playing on a grass pitch somewhere? There are a few playing fields I know which aren't public parks (where, apparently, it's forbidden to play) where there are goals / nets and we could run around for free, much like we're doing presently. I'm not fanatical about playing on the current slippy rubber surface too often, so how about we wear gloves and studded boots and make use of the outdoor grass areas? (eg, next to Bahnohof Wipkingen, the Josef Wiese on Josefstrasse / Kreis 4etc.) The weather is often damp but rarely cold-cold. The lake of Zurich keeps things relatively mild...

Yes, we have access to the grass football field any day from 12h-14h and to the indoor court only on thursdays 12h-14h

We normally play on the grass field Mon-Wed-Thu depending on the weather or on Thu indoors if it is raining outside.

it is for free and all year long. The guys made the arrangement with the school, so we have a key to access the lockers/showers/toilets areas. They have some 2 years playing there, I just started playing with them 2 months ago...

The company is in Samstagern, where there is also an school with installations, but that school refused to give the access...

So it depends on the school policies ....

Wollerau is 25 minutes from the city by car.

P.S. maybe is worth to mention that the guys who got the arrangement with the school are Wollerau natives and residents and 100% Swiss

Here's some average temperatures for Zurich:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/world/c...ml?tt=TT004340
November between 2 and 7 degrees.
December between -2 and 3 degrees.
January between -3 and 2 degrees.
February between -2 and 5 degrees.

I can't see enough people strapping on their footy boots and running around in an open field from December to February. We have a hard enough time when the weather is good.

But am I wrong? I have to say that I LOVE my Sunday footy, but I'll admit I don't fancy getting a casey pinged at me every Sunday afternoon, when its just above freezing. Nose running, freezing ears, hard ground that froze overnight - sounds a real treat.

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football Zurich

ok, some good news: a nice lady from zumikon school called me. sadly no chance at their place, but she gave me a number of a school in zollikon. they have a 3-floor-hall and because of some re-arrangements this school lost some students to another area.
she thinks, that this school might be glad to have the hall used (making money ) more..so im going to call them. x fingers!

another option came up at idaplatz. a friend of mine knows that the local boxing club where she (!) is boxing, that this club uses this small indoor hall next to the boxing pot for warm up and it seems to be possible to get a slot in there (the guys being responsible for that hall seem to be more relaxed and easy going..lets see). it might be that they have no goals...she will ask with whom we have to get into contact, what the deal is all about.

yeah, grasspitch would be ok. what makes basteigasse precious is, that we can play there 4 on 4= its not a too big pitch, its in the city, waterfountain and watering hole nearby...the usual pros.
concerning uncle max hints... josefpark is nice and not too far, which is good. i would check on the sunday 10/14 some grasspitches, take photographs and we can discuss them in paddys.

ok, ill drop a line again when i have done the call.

@adrian: dont be a sissy! i see it the same way as you do, but id try it before i grew bigger doing chips n beer infront of fifa08 at ps3. if it sucks, we dont get much folks up for it (what i assume too...)back to the ps3-front.
