City/Town: Sörenberg
Event Type: Sports
Meeting Point: Bottom of Sörenberg-Platz Chair Lift

I'm planning to go to Sörenberg for a day trip on Sunday 5th February if anyone is interested in joining me. Skiers and boarders are welcome as well as anyone just interested in a day out to meet other EFers.

Sörenberg is accessible by rail and bus from Zürich, Basel, Bern, and Luzern and it is offered as a package by SBB under their Snow n Rail discount.

Sample train times for Sunday 05.02.12:
Basel 2 hr 28 mins
Bern 1 hr 23 mins
Luzern 1hr 02 mins
Zurich 1hr 55 mins

I'm an intermediate skier and I'll go down most slopes with varying degrees of style and ability.

I'll post more details (assuming anyone wants to join me) nearer the date but I suggest meeting at 9am at the bottom of the Sörenberg-Platz 4-seater chair lift . The bus stops here and there is also a car park for those driving.

If you are planning to come, please register your interest below using the RSVP function and include your skill level.
RSVP'd Yes: 3 (3 members and No guests)
  • Ferkel
  • Steffano2002 - I'm putting myself down as a "yes" (barring anything major such as a broken leg tomorrow as I'll be snowboarding) as I am extremely interested in trying out a new station/resort and meeting ski/snowboarding buddies! Two questions I'd like ...
  • wsb556
RSVP'd Maybe: 5 (5 members and No guests)
  • adamh - for now only with a maybe
  • miami77
  • Tim8803
  • gaijin
  • outrage - I'm definitely skiing somewhere on Sunday - I like Sörenberg, so I'm tempted. Are you planning to ski over on the Rothorn much or mostly on the Sörenberg side?
RSVP sign-ups for this event are now closed.

Seems like 3 of us so far Ferkel! Then hopefully some/most of the 5 "Maybe's" will join too!

@ Outrage: seems you know the area well so join us to show us the good spots in Rothorn! I want to get to know the whole resort as best as possible! Can't freaking wait!

Try using Sörenberg Platz as the destination. According to SBB I'll be arriving at 8.29 in Schumpfheim and then getting the 8.33 bus to Sörenberg. Getting into Sörenberg Platz at 8.59.

The SBB site says that Snow n Rail tickets can only be purchased at stations or machines. I think you get given a voucher for the lift ticket which you exchange at the lift ticket office.

Sounds like you had a good day today. I was stuck in the office all day :-(
For snow and rail tickets, all you need to do is go to a ticket machine. On the right hand side there will be a tab "snow and rail" then it comes up with the different areas eg. central switzerland, vallais, etc. Pick the region where you ski resort is, then the next screen has the resorts that are covered. Then pick the resort and the corresonding number of days of lift pass that you would like. Its pretty straight forward. You get two tickets, one is the train ticket and the other is the ski pass, which you just have to change for a "real pass" at the ski resort.

Hope that helps!!!

Re: Skiing, Snowboarding Day Trip

Thanks for this information HelenT! I rang the train station but they asked me to ring the premium number so I was going to walk down to the station this evening ot tomorrow...

I think I'll just get a ticket tomorrow at the ticket desk or on Sunday morning at the machine as it seems straight forward enough!

Re: Skiing, Snowboarding Day Trip

Evening all,

well, my girfriend went to the train station for me and she got me a ticket for Sunday.

As the website advertised, it was 73.80 CHF (Return) from Biel as I have the 1/2 price card. The deal is valid for 3 days: 05.02. to 07.02.2012.

I got 2 tickets:

- One is the train/bus ticket from Biel to Sörenberg Rothornbahn

- The other is the voucher for the ski lifts

Should be straight forward enough!

So where/when are we all meeting people?

Weather report for Sunday is looking good - sunny but cold.

I am trying to work out the best place for people to meet. Does anyone know where the Kasse is as it isn't shown on the Piste Map?

Is anyone is renting equipment?

Here is the URL for the ski area:

http://www.soerenberg.ch/bahnen/

I'm planning to be on the Zurich - Luzern Train leaving Zurich HB @ 07.04.
Then the Luzern to Schumpfheim train leaving Luzern @ 07.57
I think there will be a Kasse at the destination of the Bus or very nearby. The Swiss organisation will (I'm sure) mean that you won't be stranded. My past experience of Snow 'n' Rail has been good.
When I went, I arrived by car at the opposite end from 'Platz'. There was a small ticket office there.

I didn't remember seeing any rental places but had a quick look now, there is one here: http://www.bergfex.com/soerenberg/#/...rg/skiverleih/
It seems to be close to the lift 'Schoenisei' on the piste map.

Hope this helps and have a good day.

Great! Thanks el_nello! Sorry you can't join us.

I've just landed back at Zurich and have taken advantage of a wait for the train to buy my ticket.

wsb556 and Steffano2002 - I will try and work out the best meeting arrangements. I will post details here but also PM you both. It may be later but possibly tomorrow morning as I'm totally whacked and still waiting for a train 😒

wsb556 - which direction are you coming from?

Re: Skiing, Snowboarding Day Trip

No hassle Ferkel! Get home safe and get some rest.

I think we should try and aim to be there at the same time this way we'll al be in the same bus to Sörenberg Rothornbahn!

If I leave Biel @ 06:54 I'm at Sörenberg Rothornbahn @ 09:03

If you leave Zurich HB @ 07:04 you're also at Sörenberg Rothornbahn @ 09:03

If wsb556 leaves Zug (I think you're from around there?) @ 07:29 he's also at Sörenberg Rothornbahn @ 09:03

So why don't we meet at Sörenberg Rothornbahn @ 09:03?

Re: Skiing, Snowboarding Day Trip

Hey Guys
I'm getting in at the same time as the both of you. We should all be on the same bus which I believe is # 9. I figure we can use some simple signals to identify each other. on the bus at precisely 0840 i will begin to moon walk down the isle, Ferkle you just stat howling, and Steffano when I moonwalk past your position on the bus, threaten me with one of your gloves. But seriously, I will be wearing black paints and gray jacket and i pm my number. I will see you gentlemen tomorrow between 0833-0910.

Re: Skiing, Snowboarding Day Trip

Meeting point : Bottom of Sorenberg-Platz Chair lift
Time: 9.00am

We'll hang around for about 10 mins before heading off in case any of the maybe's join us.

I'll be wearing a navy jacket and pink pants.

Weather reports are still predicting a nice sunny day but cold so don't forget some extra layers and the sunglasses!

Will PM my details to those that are confirmed.

Steffano2002 - I've not chosen Rothornbahn as this has only a couple of pistes and isn't connected to the main area.

Re: Skiing, Snowboarding Day Trip

Hi Ferkel,

How do I get to the bottom of the Sorenberg-Platz chair lift?

The Snow'n'Rail deal is to get us to Sörenberg, Rothornbahn. So what must I do to end up at the bottom of the Sorenberg-Platz chair lift instead?

Oh and wsb556, I had a great laugh when I read your post! I was thinking something more subte like holding a red rose in our mouth but moonwaking down the isle work for me too!

There is a bus stop called Sörenberg Platz which I think is where the Sörenberg chair lift is. It looks as if it is 3 stops before Rothornbahn. Although I am using Google maps and the piste map to work this out!

Keep an eye out for me on the bus or at the bus stop. What will you be wearing?

No worries wsb556.

Have just started out - how I hate early mornings! Looking forward to a good day in the mountains though!

If any of the maybe's are heading out to Sörenberg - feel free to PM me and I will arrange a meet up.

Re: Skiing, Snowboarding Day Trip

Well I'm home and sitting on the couch after taking a seriously long hot bath and I'm smiling from ear to ear!

What a day! I'm delighted you organised it Ferkel so thank you! It was great meeting you two and I hope we do it again soon! Although I wouldn't blame you for being sick of waiting for us every 5 minutes Ferkel!

Gorgeous day and delighted it went to so well!

Re: Skiing, Snowboarding Day Trip

I had a lovely day and didn't mind waiting for you at all. After all, as navigator, I was responsible for picking the runs; I'm just sorry I picked ones which weren't great for snowboarders!

I've got some photos which I'll upload onto the Skiing and Snowboarding group pages.

It was lovely to meet you both and I'm glad you joined me. It was wonderful to be skiing in the sunshine for a change. Although at -24C it was a bit cold and I'm slowly thawing out!

Darn....I will be out of town. Could you please inform via EF your thoughts on Sörenberg?
Well here are my thoughts on the place.

The scenery was really quite lovely. The blue and red pistes were quite easy (didn't venture on to the blacks) although they were getting a bit icy towards the end of the day due to the temperature.

Considering this was a Sunday in February, it was really quiet. Maybe the cold deterred people?

The piste map is lacking a bit and the runs linking the lifts can be a snowboarders nightmare! There are a couple of 4 seater chairs - one with a bubble which we were very grateful for today. There is also a 6 seater gondola and the rest are t-bars.

There are only a few restaurants on the slopes with others at the bottom of the lifts.

All in all for the Snow n Rail price, it was a well worth a visit. It's really quite a good place for a day trip.
