City/Town: Zurich
Event Type: Drinks/Bar
Meeting Point: Stall 6, Gessnerallee 8, 8001 Zürich

dear book lovers,

on our next meeting we will be discussing Friedrich Dürrenmatt's "Das Versprechen". There are numerous translations in english ("The Pledge"), the most recent from 2006, no need to read it in German.

depending on the number of RSVP we can meet at my place. this way we could arrange to maybe see some of the film scenes together and have a more intimate conversation without loud music etc.

I really hope you like the book, which I shortly present here:
http://www.englishforum.ch/social-ev...on-thread.html

enjoy!
RSVP'd Yes: 7 (7 members and No guests) RSVP'd Maybe: 1 (1 members and No guests) RSVP'd No: 1
RSVP sign-ups for this event are now closed.

Re: Zurich Book Club - The Pledge

I just couldn't believe it when my daughter came home from school the other day with the new book to read in german class: Das Versprechen
so I'm going to read it with her again. the german teacher wants them to apply an interesting system of little symbols with which they mark the text, for instance when a new character enters the seen or there is a turning point in the story... she is actually enjoying it! (and mum is going to have a peek now and then)

The book is with me now. Not too thick, either

Looking forward to starting it this weekend!

Re: Zurich Book Club - The Pledge

Reader-friends, just as an FYI, it looks like due to an unplanned commitment of the organizer, the meeting will be moved, possibly (but not yet certain) to the following week. Stay tuned for more updates!

Re: Zurich Book Club - The Pledge

Thank you so much Boker Tov!!! I couldn't log into the English Forum website from Italy, access was blocked (see a previous thread)

Yes, unfortunately, due to family reasons I must move our next Book Club meeting to one week later.
I apologize for this change, thank you for understanding.
I hope you can still all make it, and maybe someone who couldn't on the other date, too.
I look forward to seeing you Sunday April 22!

Re: Zurich Book Club - The Pledge

I am really excited about this time change - although I am super tired today - because it means lots of reading time by the lake after work (assuming of course I can leave at a decent time!)

This book is very interesting, by the way, but no spoilers, I reserve my opinions for the discussion

Re: Zurich Book Club - The Pledge

thanks for signing up for the new venue!

have a look at the film trailer, I totally recommend it because it's very faithful - but NO cheating please, it does not substitute reading the book

Re: Zurich Book Club - The Pledge

I started reading The Pledge on the plane to Krakow today and I the journey just flew by. I got caught up in Dürrenmatt’s world, notably the dreary, dark and grey atmosphere of the first chapters. The weather in Krakow is also rather uninviting with strong winds and dark skies…
Anyway, excellent choice, Venice!

Ha - I also did most of my Pledge-reading on the plane as I was heading to Dusseldorf yesterday.

Really good book and a gripping read - great choice Venice

Looking forward to discussions in April!

Re: Zurich Book Club - The Pledge

I'm really glad you enjoy it, notwithstanding the dark topic and atmosphere. certainly not Heidi's Switzerland...

having already read The Pledge it's a good opportunity for me to read his other books and gain further insight into his world vision. I look forward to hearing if you also appreciate this mixture of (dark) humour and moral quest. I find it very original.

a bit off topic, but I am also following the work on the book in my daughter's class and learning quite a few interesting notions on the side... like how many different kinds of murder the swiss criminal code contemplates and that in switzerland a life sentence means "only" 20 years...

Just finished the book this week. I had no idea what to expect of it and I really enjoyed reading it. I think it's an excellent choice for a book club and look forward to discussing it with you all!

See you next week

Sorry you can't make it, and neither can my OH as he will be traveling. Nonetheless, we will for sure post comments online as well after the fact, so we can still discuss together

I saw it too! Wow. Incredible how a man can be so consumed as to become the shadow of his prior self. That's all I am saying, no spoilers for the discussion on Sunday!

By the way, Venice, could you PM us (or post, if public) the meeting location? Looking forward to seeing you all.

Re: Zurich Book Club - The Pledge

hello bookworms,

here I am with the venue. I have now booked a table for us at good old Stall 6, since the group is a bit too big for our kitchen table
as most of you know, the atmosphere there is totally relaxed and usually quiet enough that we can talk.

feel free to come along even if you haven't read/finished reading the book just to see how the book club works and to listen to our smart interpretations of the book

I look forward to seeing you next sunday!
