City/Town: Basel
Event Type: Other
Meeting Point: Brausebad or at the St Louis market

CYCLISTS : Meet at Brausebad (Bus 50 stop to the airport) at 10:30 sharp

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=...ra=ls&t=h&z=18
Non-cyclists: At the market (see map link above) from around 10:45.

After some shopping at the market we'll go to Cafe Literarie for coffee (and cake for me!), then on to Geant Casino for more food shopping. Of course, you can leave whenever you like!

Market to cafe to supermarket is easily walkable for those not cycling. To get to the market in the first place, either take tram 11 to St Louis Grenze and walk over the border or the French "Distri" bus (pay in Euros as you enter to the driver) from Schifflände all the way to St Louis.

RSVP'd Yes: 4 (3 members and 1 guests) RSVP'd Maybe: 4 (4 members and No guests) RSVP'd No: 2
  • ecb - Boo Hoo can't make it. Will arrange cake another day!
  • planetali - :-( will be in UK for family birthday/Jubilee do
RSVP sign-ups for this event are now closed.

Re: St Louis coffee and food shopping (from Basel)

Thanks for the sign-ups so far.

Confloozed - if your other two options fall through, then just turn up. No need to update your status; just wander around the market trying to guess which random person is me.

Planetali - No worries. See you at the market, after which you can zoom away on your electric bike. Or if we're early enough for you, pop along for a coffee too. You can do a hand-over with suzybg, using a baguette as a baton.

JustRose - if you can make it then great! Assuming you're not cycling, just wander around the market until you find me.

Re: St Louis coffee and food shopping (from Basel)

Shall we drive into Basel and then spring our bikes from the boot ?

Think I might be coming along .. and in return for bribery (coffee, chocolate cake, the usual substances ..) will offer to import goods in big car boot .. as long as not over the limit (what is the limit for baguette?)

Re: St Louis coffee and food shopping (from Basel)

Hey ECB - up to you! You could drive to mine and then cycle over or just drive all the way.

Thanks for the offer of boot storage space but I already buy as much as my bike panniers can hold. It acts as a natural limiter on the number of cakes I can buy and bring back. It would be dangerous if I had the potential of more space.

However, well, you never know. Maybe there's a special offer on something that I really need. Such as cake.

Gonna be a cool but sunny morning. Put on your hat, gloves and sunglasses and enjoy the marvel that is good food shopping.

It was a warm and sunny morning Especially nice, was the hour spent relaxing in the sun at the cafe. The tarte de jour was delicious. I counted at least nine nationalities amongst the group around the table - who says that foreigners don't integrate?

Many thanks for organising, Adrian.

Re: St Louis coffee and food shopping (from Basel)

Thanks everyone who could make it. It was great to have 16 people sitting in a cafe in the sunshine enjoying coffees, beers and cakes. We were such a multinational crowd! Almost every country covered. Apart from Switzerland of course.

I now have a fridge full of tasty Alsace food, lots of cakes, hams and cheese. Yumm.

Re: St Louis coffee and food shopping (from Basel)

My son considers himself Swiss (actually UK/French) so will that do?

Really enjoyable morning. Thank you

PS Nutella DOES have sugar in .. as its no. 1 ingredient .. so got that wrong .. apologies .. you see what a good job they have done advertising it as healthy! But I guess as a toss up between that and jam, nutella might just win .. sort of.

Thanks Adrian for organizing. It was nice to meet some new-to-me EFers (Hi ecb!)

Sorry for ducking off, but I couldn't be bothered to continue shopping indoors on such a nice day. The moto was calling, you know?

Re: St Louis coffee and food shopping (from Basel)

Just re-looked at the attendance list.

Sorry Planetali. I usually leave at 11:30 but made it an hour earlier as the weather's improving. Plus, with the amount of people we had, it turns into quite a long event as we all chill in the cafe. In fact, if it wasn't for the fact my willpower held out, I would have been happy to move from coffee to beer and just stayed there all day.

Badgerman - glad you came! Good that we spotted you. Well, you spotted me - the coincidence of you walking past the crossroads just as I stopped art a red light on my bicycle and was chatting, in English, to the person behind me. Had I read the "arm in a sling" comment before I left home I might have spotted you first.

Oh.
I thought, for a second, that you were talking about meeting in St. Louis, Missouri, in the USA.

Never mind, I won't be able to make it.

You'd also need to go back in time. But apart from getting the date and location wrong, I'm sure you would have loved it

Yeah, I realised that after I posted.

I do sometimes miss being in der Schweiz.

Hope everyone had a great time.
Thanks.

Whenever I search for what's on at the cinema in St Louis, I always get a really fabulous selection of films then suddenley realise that is because I am getting the cinema listings for Missouri ... you sure have good films on at your cinema!

So nice to meet everyone and put some faces to the names. Now that the weather is improving maybe we can get ourselves up a bit earlier and make it to the market - but really the cafe is the best bit!! We even found St. Louis Amber beer in Geant.

The restaurant/cafe itself sells their own beerin wonderfully designed bottles (up to 2l I believe) inside. Not cheap, but they do look great. I may treat myself one day.
