Re: Zurich Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football

Not sure if we'll have enough of a crowd for a game this weekend, what with Easter and all, but let's give it a shot, if we haven't enough players by Saturday morning then I'll call off the game.

Please bring along 2 shirts (either white, dark, or colour), and if you've got a football bring that along too.

We had quite a ruckus at last Sunday's game, with 3 unsigned players turning up (to be fair they sat out until we called them on), a couple of late comers, and issues concerning people's rights to play; so here are some new rules:

1) If you sign up to play, you have priority, BUT this does NOT mean you can come whenever you please and expect your spot to remain secure.

2) Signed up players will have until 12:10 or until the second game commences, whichever comes first, after which you lose your priority to play.

I really don't want to ask people to leave, or get into an argument about rules and regulations. This is meant to be a laid back and friendly game, I'm not going to print a list on a weekly basis and check who has showed up or not. Use common sense, show up when you sign up to play, and turn up on time.

On a pleasanter note, we're trying to find a larger field to play on and figure out if it'll available on a regular basis. This will give us the opportunity to play with a larger group, so let's keep our fingers crossed and hope something can be organised.

Cheers,

Aquanexus

Aquanexus: you need to fix the date of the event, as it's in the past (yesterday's date) the event is closed!

That leaves the door open for people to just turn up in hope that someone is late. What should we do with those people if everybody comes on time? I personally won't be happy to see those people getting a game for whatever reason e.g. substituting for someone who doesn't feel like playing anymore. By the way, I don't even want to know how William got to play despite claiming that he will only 'pop by Schanzengraben to return the lost property'.

In addition, having a list of people who signed up is not problem since I'm willing to bet that most of us have smartphones with internet access.

Should it not be okay for people to turn up till 12.20 since we only start playing at 12.10 and the first game ends at 12.20?

In my opinion, i tend to agree that signing up should only guarantee one a playing slot valid untill the next round begins. To allow for unconditional guarantee to a person that signs up but is late does not make sense for me. Everyone who signs up makes a committment to come at 12 noon. If everyone starts to think that there is a guaranteed slot for him/her just because they have signed up, then ill discipline will start to creep in and tardiness and no shows will go up. Having a caveat that if you snooze you lose your spot is a good control measure. Imagine for some reason, one of the folks who signed up and failed to show up and the rest of the 14 members have to wait without knowing a clue whether this person will ever show up at all when there are people who make an effort to come down and try their luck waiting for a chance to play and we barred them for joining ?? For me, it is like making a reservation at a restaurant. If you fail to turn up on time, then the restaurant has a prerogative to forfeit your table and offer it to the next potential customer waiting in line without any reservations.

Re: Zurich Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football

To be frank, we have a set time for playing. The only reason I can see people coming late is because of unforeseen circumstances, this happens rarely. I'd rather know within the first 10-15 min how many people have decided to show up and how we can split into balanced teams.

William and Konstantine played because:
1) Someone on the field requested a substitute
2) We had a player leave after 60 minutes from fatigue
They both mentioned at the start that they would step aside if we were full. This was a one time occurrence, and I take full responsibility for letting them play. Cut William some slack, the reason he didn't sign up for our game was because he tried setting up an external game for people who couldn't sign up in time.

Regarding waiting till 12:10 or 12:20, It's only fair to ask people to turn up on time, and this is an additional incentive to do so. It gives us more playing time as well.

Wudzz has no particular reputation at present
Re: Zurich Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football

I agree that last week got a bit complicated, which was the result of people not following the "rules":
- Only turn up if you’re on the list
- If you’re on the list, turn up and be on time

We've had the debate about what happens when 15 people have already signed up, and I thought the new system with the maybe list was working well. But if people start to bypass the sign-up sheet and turn up expecting to get a game, things are going to descend into chaos.

I don’t have a problem with William turning up – he was returning lost property, we knew he was turning up, and said when he arrived that he would only play if the chance arose. He has also been trying to accommodate extra people by organizing the second match, which was the only reason he didn’t make the first 15…

As for the tardiness, I think it is clear what time the game starts. You should be there on time or you might forfeit your place (if for some reason there are more than 15). It doesn’t make for a good game when people on the list are a no-show.

I’m just glad that Aquanexus organizes the game – I don’t think we should be making his job any harder!

Re: Zurich Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football

If it rains this Sunday as it has been the case during most of the week, we won't have to worry about registration lists, guaranteed spots, time to arrive by etc.

I suggest we get our priorities straight and start researching whether there is an opposite to the rain dance or an equivalent ritual to cancel the threat of bad weather this weekend. Failing that, we should try to contact the Chinese government to see if they have any of those cloud seeding missiles left over from the Olympics 4 years ago.

Guaranteed slots for the next 3 games offered to people who can come up with a working solution.

Re: Zurich Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football

Wait until the warmer days when thirty people turn up. Impose an agreeable 'rule' as soon as you can or you'll be faced with blow ins who feel they have rights. We had this issue time and again over the years and it can be very frustrating and dare I say it disrespectful to dedicated players.

There *were* three sets of coloured bibs donated with great generosity by SalsaLover. Does anyone know where they went..?

Re: Zurich Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football

IMPORTANT: GAME OFF FOR TODAY

Sorry guys, it's still drizzling a bit mixed with the rare snowflake, probably not the best mixture for a safe and slip-free game. I'm not sure it's the kind of weather any of us are keen to play in anyhow.

I'VE SET UP ANOTHER GAME FOR TOMORROW (Check Events)
It's supposed to be dry and sunny tomorrow, so i'll drive by the field and check if it'll be open and if enough people sign up we can play tomorrow.
