City/Town: Zurich
Event Type: Dinner
Meeting Point: Desperados Wiedikon

Hey Gringoes! I've been wanting to try this place out for a few months, so anybody care to join me?

http://www.desperado.ch/

This is in Wiedikon, near Schmiedie Wiedikon station. The number 9 and 14 trams run straight past it.

Plan is show up, eat, drink, compare sombreroes. I'll wait until sometime tuesday and then make a reservation, so please RSVP asap to give me an idea of numbers.
RSVP'd Yes: 12 (7 members and 5 guests)
  • Uncle Max - You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave
  • Nanda - I think I'm going to make it this time :)
  • DanielL + 4 guests - Yum!
  • jemma - Sod it, am sure after a few tequilas I won't even know I've got a cold (must make sure I don't get carried away on the shots though as we all know what happened at pub golf!)
  • Natasha
  • Woodsie - Glad I checked instructions. The only Desperados I knew of before was in Höngg.
  • hugh_abu + 1 guest - Hell yeah...!!!!! Based on below post.
RSVP'd Maybe: 4 (4 members and No guests)
  • Moran - I'm right around the corner but it depends on work, will hopefully make it but may have to turn up after dinner
  • Jessy-lein - I may come. It'd be on my way home from the gym. Before or after the shower. I don't know what Mexican food is like in England, but desperados is.......as close to mexican food as Switzerland is to Mexico. But the margarhitas are taquilla-y
  • Su1975
  • MarcoPolo78 - Gonna try to make it for a quick drink later...!
RSVP'd No: 6
  • terryhall - Attendance precluded by prior arrangements. Report back tho cos I like my Mexicana :)
  • polly - Love the place ... but Grasshoppers are playing tomorrow :(
  • Nathu
  • saharanz - Can't make this one. Not sure if that's a bad thing or a good thing????
  • MathNut - Can't make it... sounds like fun though!
  • thoean - Sorry, at pumpkin country on pumpkin day.
RSVP sign-ups for this event are now closed.

Re: Zurich - Wiedikon Desperados

Thanks for organising hugh. A good turnout, and good food and drink too.

Studying and squinting at correlation plots is not really what I want to be doing right now though.

Dave, I kept telling you last night that it was Dan that organised the event.

All hail the Dan.

A special mention for our best mate the barman that was giving us good value bottles of liquid gold. That alone makes it worth another visit.

Re: Zurich - Wiedikon Desperados

Good day all!

What a great fun night. Whoever said it was bad is full of sh*t and I will take their opinions with a grain of salt in the future.

The food was great, the service sensational, and the company rocked. The jury is still out on the birthday song, as I cannot seem to get it out of my head.

Whose brilliant idea was it to drink tequila? Surprisingly, I do not have a terrible hangover.

Re: Zurich - Wiedikon Desperados

It was your idea. Though you may not remember it now...
We simply concurred. I remember giving several glasses to the guitar and the harp(!) player while pleading we have no money to give - but we have tequila..! They liked that.

Re: Zurich - Wiedikon Desperados

I have after careful laboratory tests concluded that Tequila is the drink to have.

It goes straight to your head and your feet, so you don't need to drink much, ( one tequila sunrise is enough ) and doesn't give me hangover or bad mouth taste the next day.

I have to go and taste the food at that Desperados..

Is it real mexican or is "mexican-for-swiss-palates" mexican

Re: Zurich - Wiedikon Desperados

Did the bill add up in the end ? I remember scribbling down something on a napkin, dropping some cash , and staggering out past Uncle Max sitting in front of a mound of cash like The Godfather

The service was pretty good, gregarious and friendly. I only realised how unusual that was when I sobered up this morning..

Re: Zurich - Wiedikon Desperados

I am happy to provide a narrative, as unlike Dory Dan (how much are blinds?) I have a pretty good memory.

Natasha is quietly (or as quiet as she gets) sitting at the bar sucking back on a marboro after having scoffed tortillas. Enter stage left DaveA, heading for the bar.

DaveA: Hello Trailer - Tash. Wanna drink?
Trailer-Tash: I have a beer.
DaveA: I can see that. But do you want a drink?
Trailer-Tash: Should we have a tequila?
DaveA: Let's do it

1 shot later

Trailer-Tash: I wonder how much a bottle is.
DaveA: Let's ask.
DaveA & Trailer-Tash: "Barkeep, how much will a bottle of that sweet nectar set us back?"..... "90 francs you say? Well that seems quite reasonable".....

And that was that

Re: Zurich - Wiedikon Desperados

I am just glad it wasnt whisky. I have always wanted to say:

"Bartender ! Bring me whisky, and leave the bottle."

But alas service like that is not to be found in those yonder saloons.

Re: Zurich - Wiedikon Desperados

I see you've been confronted with the birthday song on a normal Wednesday. I feel sorry for you but it could've been worse. The head waiter once told me that the Wiedikon record is five birthdays in a single evening.

Re: Zurich - Wiedikon Desperados

Thanks to all for a fun evening and er, night. May I ask, in future, one of you actually stops me drinking from and finishing the second bottle of tequila? It's not the real me. Step in.

I thought the service was excellent at Desperados. Their prices were fair. Without wanting to rain on the parade, the food was so-so. Faultless in it's presentation and cooking, just rather uninspired. It's TexMex - rather than Mexican - and 'theme' in feel. I'd go again for the atmosphere with a group but not for the culinary experience. Perhaps this should be in the 'restaurant reviews' section. Dear God, I'm turning into Michael Winner

Re: Zurich - Wiedikon Desperados

Yeah I had to save you from yourself at one point when you were sniffing and negotiating for premium bottle of "real mans" tequila at 300 bucks...

The food was OK, as expected. I was well impressed that they did have the plastic cactus and terracota walls that I specifically requested as part of the theme experience.

But average food is not going stop the team from having a great time. Jemma didnt even cry.

I agree. Maybe next time we should try a different place. Bohemia does good tex-mex-ish and there's also Iroqois ... just not next week when I'm not around ...

Thanks for the great night. It was good to see the faces of the many veterans and legends .... and hats-off to DaveA with his trusted golden companion and his keeness in sharing
