City/Town: Basel/ Luzern
Event Type: Other
Meeting Point: BASEL SBB, 8:45-9:00 am

Since this is the third year I have run this, I can justifably call this an annual event...

Every year now I have arranged a trip up Pilatus. if we get the 9:04 Lugano train we can get to the top in time for lunch and still have time to get the last boat accross the lake back to Luzerne

Luzern meet up point from 10:10 at the balcony cafe inside the station. Look for a red "ducati" jacket and a pink baseball hat (That's me) planning to leave for the bus to kriens at 10:45.

The bus to kriens is about 10 minutes leaving at every 8 minutes, and the cable run takes about 15 minutes. That means we will be at the mid point station at around 11:30.

For those hiking it is about 2-3 hours from there to the top, see wanderland link below. Weather forecast is overcast/ some su and no precipitation.
Plan to meet us in the balcony restaurant until shortly before 3:30pm. In order to meet the last boat, we need to be on the 3:45 cog wheel railway which meets the 16:35 boat. (http://www.pilatus.ch/en/railway-cableways/timetable/) that gets us back to Luzerne for 17:45 via a rather pleasent trip round the lake.

General information> http://www.pilatus.ch/en/
Hiking:> http://map.wanderland.ch/?lang=en&p&route=all
look up pilatus for the routes.

If you are hiking, take the usual precautions. The trail is well marked according to people I know who have been up it, but it is very steep in places, and once underway there are no intermediate stops to bail out and catch buses, it is a mountain! I believe it is an intermediate hike according to the Swiss which means for most expat city dwellers it is quite a hard hike starting at about 1200m, descending to around 800m and then a final hike up to 2000m. see the map link.

Anyway I look forward to meeting you all

Re: Annual Lunch trip to Pilatus

Are you sure the cogwheel railway and boat connection is on this week ? According to the SBB website it only opens from the end of the first week in May.

Re: Annual Lunch trip to Pilatus

Was a bit of an oops day, Pilatus closed for business. However since SBB exchanged the tickets for all day ABOs, we went on a point and shoot tour of random trains ending up in Andermatt....

A big thankyou to Gasthaus zum Sternen for a warm welcome in the inbetween season and being open on a Sunday... (www.gasthaussternen.com)

Re: Annual Lunch trip to Pilatus

I guess you didn't read my post about the cogwheel train being closed. We went to pilatus on Saturday using the cablecar and it was absolutely wonderful up top. On the second level the rope park and tube/tyre ride was open and there were lots of people biking and hiking...
