Re: Zurich Book Club - Max Frisch

I usually order books from play.com or from amazon uk, but they do not stock this title in English. Will I have to import the book from the USA?
How are the others going to obtain their copies?

Sagitta, if you haven't already done so, I suggest you become a member of the Zentralbibliothek in Zurich. You can fill out your info online, then go and pick up your card. Some books you have to order beforehand from the online catalogue, then one hour later they are ready for you to pick up, while some are already on the shelves - it will say when you search for the book in the online catalogue. The loan is for 4 weeks, renewable automatically twice (additional 4*2 weeks) at no cost. Afterwards, there is a fee.

As for your question, the ZB has 4 copies in English of the Max Frisch book, and, as of last night when I picked up one of those copies, the other 3 were still available.

Re: Zurich Book Club - Max Frisch

I found by chance after our last session this very enjoyable article in english comparing the two grands messieurs of swiss-german literature and wanted to share it with you. I'm sure it can add insights to our reading and discussion.
pl. see the two pdfs attached, I hope you can open them and read/print without problems, otherwise let me know.

I am really enjoying Der Mensch erscheint im Holozän, so thanks warbash for this fresh and original suggestion!
I really like Herr Geiser, but don't you feel sorry for him, too? I find his story and character actually quite similar to Matthäi: both are WAITING for something important to happen.
We know that Matthäi waited in vain and I have the feeling that for Herr Geiser things aren't looking very rosy either

@Boker tov & co: should I be posting this kind of contribution in the Book Club Discussion Thread? I was uncertain...

Re: Zurich Book Club - Max Frisch

I read the book on my journey to and from Basel on Monday A good and a quick read! Lots of interesting things to discuss too I think.

I returned my copy to the Zentralbibliothek on Monday so it should be available if anyone else is looking.

Re: Zurich Book Club - Max Frisch

Finally got my copy from the Bibliothek yesterday and am enjoying it so far.

Found this article in the news today - how to have a successful book club!

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/b...Sean-Bean.html

So far I think we've done pretty well.

Looking forward to next time.
Tim

from this article it looks like we are really doing everything right (apart from the alcohol)
and ours does leave a "warm glow", definitely - at least for me

Thanks to venice for sharing the article (good practice) and to tim, I agree, we're not doing too bad

I have about 100 pages left of another book I am reading, but I am looking forward to read Mr. Frisch over the long weekend on the train.

I've just finished it and found it fascinating. profound and delicate but not difficult. I really look forward to our discussion. there are at least two enigmas for which I need a "key".

thank you warbash for this great suggestion, I have now started to read the next Max Frisch book!

Re: Zurich Book Club - Max Frisch

Hi all, I contacted warbash as she seems to be "missing in action" regarding the meeting location of the coming Sunday. If she by chance does not reply, if the weather is nice, we could even meet at an outside location near the lake, or similar. Thoughts?

that would be lovely, but not having been here long the only place I can think of is that café at zurichhorn. or the Fischhaus (?)

The weather will be awful on Sunday. Get yourself a roundtrip ticket on a Zürisee Ship...

mon dieu, you're right, I just checked.

the ship would be nice for a pleasure trip, but for serious discussion without discussion I'd rather stic to Stall 6. also, you never know if someone suffers from sea sickness and throws up over the books...

any other suggestions?

Re: Zurich Book Club - Max Frisch

Hi all,

sorry that I have indeed been missing in action these past weeks, i've been travelling a lot and have had my mother over to visit. and, for some reason, my subscription to this thread doesn't seem to notify me when people respond! boo.

Hope Stall 6 works for everyone, my knowledge of exciting zurich meeting places is still very sparse.

I'm glad that people seemed to have enjoyed Frisch, it's a bit of an odd book in style and form so some people are put off by that. But not you, hardy book-club folks!! So I'm looking forward to seeing everyone this evening and chatting!

see you soon

Re: Zurich Book Club - Max Frisch

jpayne, that's a shame! I waited for mine for about three weeks and it was over a week late, but I have managed to read it although things hung in the balance.
I think it's mine turn now to pick the next book, and I promise it will be something easily available.
