Meeting Point: Johanniterbrücke

A cycle trip (under 15km each way) to Fünfschilling, Germany.

This is a restaurant owned by a farm, selling local produce both in the restaurant and attached shop. They also have their own wines. They have lots of outdoor seating but I've been advised it gets very busy, hence the reason for leaving Basel at 11:00 - we'll arrive before noon.

The cycle ride there is quite easy. A bit of a hill at the beginning, then flat. A mountain, hybrid or trekking bike is perfect. There's a short section of gravel path so a road bike could struggle.

Let's meet at 11am on Johanniterbrücke. Meet on the south side (i.e. facing the town centre) half way along. That way you can admire the view if you're early

I don't know any way to get to the restaurant by public transport.

Note: If the weather's bad I will cancel this trip

It's about a half hour walk from Eimeldingen railway station, IIRC, which is ten minutes by train from Badischer Bahhof.

Re: Cycle trip for lunch at Fünfschilling

Weather is looking good, which is pretty amazing considering the length and severity of the storm we had last night. I think there will be 5 of us in total, maybe 6.

On the way back I'll be stopping either at the Rhinecenter (for Marktkauf) or in Weil am Rhein (for Rewe or Hieber) to go shopping. Of course, people can go on the short distance back to Basel without me! I'm happy in a supermatket on my own

Easterly : The gravel path is a short one (2 or 3 minutes); you can either take it easy or cycle around it - there's a road which is not really any longer

Have a Problem with my bike's crank arm. Had a Charlie Chaplinesque moment yesterday when it Separated from the crank while returning home . Off to Lorrach now, because no shop in Basel seems to have the replacement part

Just thought I'd share this with all my fellow bikers...

There is a shop over the border in Grenzach-Whylen, reachable with a 15 mins. ride on Bus 38 from Basel Schifflände, getting off at Whylen Turnhalle:

Friendly people and service but limited English...

Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with them - only been there to look for a new bike.

Re: Cycle trip for lunch at Fünfschilling

enjoy.... a few quick tips for that place:

if you order a starter and a main they bring it all together or just a few minutes betwen

order the starter first then order the main after you have finished and ALWAYS ask if the items are home made... a lot of items on the menu are not.

And if there is something wrong with the food tell them as they remove it from the bill.

Re: Cycle trip for lunch at Fünfschilling

Thanks everyone who came. Nine of us had a leasurely cycle the 14km from basel to Fünfschilling. The first third of the trip wasn't particularly pleasant (mainly on roads) but once I find a better way to get to Haltingen then we're sorted.

Food was great and the service was excellent despite the fact we desperately tried to confuse the staff by all ordering random cakes with random ice cream flavours.

I had pizza (with asparagus - half the menu was asparagus based as it's in season), a cider, a cake, two scoops of ice cream and a coffee for 20Fr including a tip.

The weather held out for us, too.

Thanks for organising the trip - and more than that, for your patience.

Come to think of it, I think our table was about the only one there with roars of laughter. Such fun!

Looking forward to the next visit to Fünfschilling!

Thanks for organising the trip!!! we enjoyed ourselves a lot.

That the menus were available in English (and French) was an unexpected surprise.
