City/Town: Zürich
Event Type: Other
Meeting Point: Maison Blunt

Dear all, this time for lunch I propose my Nr. 2 favorite restaurant in Zurich, place of many a pleasant culinary memory, not to mention great Saturday morning brunches - hangover or not!

I have taken every single visitor I've had in Zurich to this place, I've been there for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, evening drinks, and never once been disappointed.

I like to hide there from time to time in the evening with a cup of mint tea, a book, and, if I have the OH along, a portable chess board.

So, who's in for some spectacular Moroccan food in a great ambiance?

Maison Blunt
Gasometerstrasse 5
8005 Zurich
http://www.maison-blunt.ch/

IMPORTANT NOTE: The restaurant is always packed - they take reservations, but they want a final number from me a couple of days before at the latest. So please I kindly ask you to RSVP accordingly

See you all there!
RSVP'd Yes: 11 (10 members and 1 guests) RSVP'd Maybe: 2 (2 members and No guests) RSVP'd No: 1
  • LouisaB - Sad not to make it (at Olympics - whoop!) but this restaurant is fab - good choice!
RSVP sign-ups for this event are now closed.

Re: A Taste of Morocco - Lunch in Zürich

For those interested, the menu can be found at this link: http://www.maison-blunt.ch/index.cfm?Page=A01

You can click Mittagsmenu (lunch menu), Tageskarte (daily menu offering that they have all day), Abendkarte (evening menu) and Getränkekarte (drinks).

If you have doubts or are curious about what is what, feel free to post here. My German is awful, but I am very fluent in Moroccan cuisine

Re: A Taste of Morocco - Lunch in Zürich

I am looking at the menu and I don't see much in the way of Moroccan cuisine. I would expect Tagines, Cous Cous with lamb/chicken, dishes with preserved lemons, brochettes, bastilla, chorba, harira, bissara, lentil soup, Brik etc.. etc..

I think the restaurant is Mediterranean but certainly cannot be described as typically Moroccan.

Oh come on, you're telling me, that "Rösti" isn't Moroccan?

Damn, I was just about to write exactly the same thing but you beat me to it. Hummus, Tabouleh, Fatayer, Kibbeh, Labneh, Babaganoush, Vine leaves, Sambusik.... it's a Syrian or Lebanense restaurant! but.... wait... there is the section "Moroccan specialities" further down the page. What a relief! :-)

Pity that the lunch menu seems to be heavily Röstified.

Ahh, thanks so they do have a Moroccan Evening menu. Still, its a bit of a mish mash kind of restaurant but I'll reserve judgement until I've eaten there.

I always trust Boker Tov's judgement. She knows her stuff. I will be back to check out that restaurant's evening menu.
Besides, as I see it, our lunches are not mainly about food.

Re: A Taste of Morocco - Lunch in Zürich

For a Jordanian Mamma, who loves cooking and eating I can say this place is a great tearoom, a place where you can always walk in , have a nice mint-tea and a good long chat with a friend. It has this San Francisco chilled atmosphere. The mezze is Lebanese/Syrian , but the main dishes are Moroccan. About the quality of the food, again it's a chilled out easy going place, so the food is not excellent but also not bad. I think it's a good value for what you pay.

The service is excellent. They are always friendly and helpful, of course there is this Saturday brunch time when it's crazy busy and service tend to get slower.

Re: A Taste of Morocco - Lunch in Zürich

Wow, what a nice discussion!

I also found the more "typical" Moroccan dishes in the evening menu. However, I should mention that one time I wanted to go at lunchtime and was dying for a tagine, I called in advance and asked very, very nicely, and they made it for me

Normally though, I was very happy with the breakfast/brunch food, which I found to be excellent quality and plenty. Additionally, I am quite partial to falafel - not strictly Moroccan, but I can't help it...

Proverbial nail in the head. I secretly think that I am so drawn to this place because it reminds me of my years in San Francisco - the ambiance, the customers, the atmosphere. It's the kind of place where you go when you want to daydream a bit, read, and as I mentioned, I found it a particularly conducive environment to play chess. My OH says it reminds him of his years in Berlin. The two best cities in the world (in my opinion), San Francisco and Berlin...can it be a coincidence?

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Been dying to join one of BokerTov's splendid lunches for months, at last the moon/stars/childcare are all in alignment - looking forward to it. How will I recognise you?

Thanks and regards

Great, looking forward to meeting you!

Since this time around we can make reservations, I am closing the RSVP in a couple of days, then sending each subscribed participant a confirmation PM with the reservation name and my phone number, just in case. When you get to the restaurant, you will then be able to inquire about our table.

See you there!

Re: A Taste of Morocco - Lunch in Zürich

Hi all, what a nice group today! I really enjoyed seeing my usuals, as well as meeting many new faces!

Aren't the portions incredibly tricky - meaning they look small when they bring them out, then you wonder how you're going to get through the full plate...

Pleasant place as usual, great company. Thank you!

My kind of people (cat lovers, canary lovers ) , my sort of place, delicious food. The waiter had to practically throw us out of there because they were closing at 2. I didn't want to leave.

Thanks for organizing this BokerTov!
Even if you were at the other end of the table - we couldn't see you, but we could hear you laughing :-)
The place was really nice, and the company - well, even better than usual, if that is possible
Didn't want to leave, either...

Re: A Taste of Morocco - Lunch in Zürich

First time I had the chance to join this lunch and was super. What a great bunch of people that made you feel welcome from the beginning.

Loved to get to know you a bit guys, wish I would work closer to Zurich to join more often.

I will keep an eye on the introductions area

Thanks for organizing BokerTov

Edit: Zwissmiss, definitely nothing like your avatar, I think it was the checky Z in Zwissmiss what led me to you (or my newly found super-power)
