Dear Bookclubbers

Thanks for a great evening yesterday. For our next book I'd like to suggest The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes. It's a novella about a middle aged man coming to terms with his past.

Re: Zurich Book Club - The Sense of an Ending

That was quick. I've also got my tickets for the Julian Barnes book reading on 20 October at Kaufleuten. I'm flying back from Manchester that day and as long as my plane is on time I'll be at the book reading in the evening. I haven't been to one of these book readings before, I expect it will probably be moderated partly in English and partly in German.

If anyone wants to join me then tickets are available direct from the Kaufleuten website. Hope to see some of you there.

I may not be able to join you. When we were setting the date I completely forgot that I had promised to babysit for a friend that day. I will read the book anyway and see if a possibility opens for me to be there.

come on, sagitta, we need you more than your friend's offspring!
I would never expect a friend to guarantee me she will be free on a certain day two months ahead! I'm sure she has time to find a competent substitute

you might have a point. let's think very hard about the next book's title - it could help with the marketing

we might even choose books based on their titles. as good a choice as any other...

Spawn, not offspring, seems to be the word of choice on this forum.
Well, I offered to 'babysit' her 9-year old son because this girl really deserves a weekend away with her OH.

Awesome idea, I might be able to join - I have never been to a book reading before. No wait, I am lying, I was in one before in San Francisco, but I didn't know anything about the writer and to be honest he was nothing to write home about (pun intended) - I was dragged there by a friend who had a mega crush on the guy

Bring the kid along? Bribe him by telling him that if he sits quietly with some comic books or a videogame for a couple of hours while we discuss the book, I will afterwards challenge him to the ultimate table-football match (you noticed they have a foosball table near the entrance, right?) and he gets to drink as many soft drinks and eat as many greasy chips as he wants. Just don't tell mom & dad

(COVERS HER HEAD IN SHAME AND BEGS FOR FORGIVENESS)

Hi all, I was gently reminded this morning that I committed to going to a concert on this date, this time, and my ticket has been purchased already.

I hadn't marked it on my calendar and completely forgot about it, until I was reminded this morning

So I am very sorry, but if we keep this date I can't make it. I have the book however, will read it, and will comment on the discussion thread after the meeting. Again, I am very, very sorry to bail.

since two of our most time-honoured (not sure what that means, but it sounds important) members can't come I would suggest rescheduling.

Re: Zurich Book Club - The Sense of an Ending

I'm happy to re-schedule. A couple of suggestions - Sunday 30th September although I would most probably not get there by 7pm - possibly we could do 8pm till 10pm instead. Alternatively, the afternoon of 28th October or Sunday evening 4th November.

If people let me know what they prefer I'll update it.

Re: Zurich Book Club - The Sense of an Ending

So we do the 30th September then?

P.S. to organizer - when you edit the event and change the date, it is possible that you will lose all the RSVPs, so people should make sure that they RSVP again if that's the case.
