Arabic speaking families in Zurich area

Dear Arabic speaking expats

We are a young family living in Richterswil, Zurich. In our household, I speak Arabic to my 10 months old baby girl and my husband speaks Italian. She also goes to a kinderkrippe where they speak Swiss German. With the fact that we live in an English-German speaking community and Italy is just 3 hours away. I feel that she gets a huge share of listening to people speaking German, English and Italian. However, I feel that she never gets the chance to hear much Arabic around. I also started to feel that day after day my Arabic is getting rusty and hard to speak fluently.

I was hoping through EF , may be we can meet Arabic speaking people, who would like to meetup sometimes and keep their Arabic tongue alive?

Thanks a bunch,
Kay

Hi Kay,
I was so happy to see your post. Although I'm not in Switzerland quite yet, I still wanted to reply to your post. I am originally Swiss, but living in Canada with my husband and 2.5 year old daughter We are in the process of filing paperwork for my husband and hopefully will be moving to Zurich in June/July if all goes well. I speak Arabic with my daughter, and I can totally relate how difficult it is to keep the Arabic from getting "rusty". I feel like my vocabulary is running out :/ My native tongue is actually Swiss German, then I learned English, and then Arabic as I lived in the Middle East for a few years. What kind of Arabic dialect do you speak? I'm so limited to my Lebanese dialect (step dad and husband are from Lebanon), but really want to better myself in classical Arabic as I hope my daughter will be able to write/read in Arabic one day. I feel like once we move it will be so hard to keep the Arabic going, but knowing other moms are going through the same thing gives me hope that maybe we can help each other out

Take care and hope to hear from you sometime!

Nicole

Hello Nicole,
That is fantastic your moving to Zurich. It's a great place to raise a family. Please PM me once your in town and up for meeting up.
My Arabic is Jordanian Arabic, though I lived most of my school years in Dubai area, in a small town near by and my Arabic is some sort of a mix of a few dialects. I yet speak, read and write high Arabic so will be very happy to meet up and brush up on our Arabic speaking skills.

Looking forward to hear from you, and good luck on the move.

Cheers

Try www.diwan.ch

it is Egyptian dominated as the Abdul-Aziz family originates from Cairo and Alexandria, but also many Lebanese are linked up to them. And in their WEBsite you may find many links to Arab things in the wider Zürich area

For those interested there are some Lebanese or partially Lebanese restaurants. The Cèdre du Liban on Badenerstrasse close to Langstrasse and close to Bellevue at Schifflände, the Palme de Beirut at Bertastrasse near Lochergut, plus the Tunisian-Lebanese Sultan in Wipkingen on the road to Höngg. The hosts ARE Lebanese and in case of the "Sultan" a Lebanese-Tunisian family.

Re: Arabic speaking families in Zurich area

Dear Kay and Nicole,
I was very happy to see both your posts.
I am a Lebanese, married to a Brazilian, living in Zurich. We are expecting our baby boy any day now (due date May 21).
The plan is that I will speak Arabic (Lebanese) to our son, while my husband will speak Portuguese. We also managed to secure a place at the Krippe next door which will be in Swiss German.
I would definitely love to meet. I know a few Arabs around here, but none with kids...
Let me know.
Zina

Re: Arabic speaking families in Zurich area

I just thought I add on this post saying after I have posted my original message asking if there are any Arabic speaking families in our area, I had many moms, families or young newly married ladies from Arabic background who are either new comers to Switzerland or been here for some time and still would like to widen their Arabic network, many contacted me asking to meet up for coffee or play date or a girls get together...etc

We have established a lovely small group of Arabic speaking ladies here in Zurich. So for all those Arabic speakers in Zurich looking for a small Arabic network please PM me and I am happy to send you invites to all our get together events.

Cheers
