Re: Basel weekend cycling group

I've done (all three loops - it comes to about 60km) the Slowup twice before and it's good fun. There are a couple of places with live music, sausages and beer tents to help replenish the calories.

Ok another week, another ride. I maintain the one suggested by Caroline for the 15th as I think nobody did it this previous Sunday.

P.S. I went for a ride on the morning of the 8th and arrived completely dry :P
It ended up not raining for the duration.
I did about 3/4 of that route on Sunday afternoon, getting home just before the heavens opened. I would say the route I used took a leisurely 40 mins, would def recommend it. The reservoir filter room was also open so I had a wee nosey inside.

As someone else has mentioned, it's the slow up this coming Sunday. I am planning on doing at least 2/3rds of it with some friends (west and mitte, in a figure of 8), details not ironed out yet but you'd be welcome to join.

Re: Basel weekend cycling group

Given that there is a special event I'm definitely in favor of going for that one.
Personally I would even be up for trying the complete route, I think I could handle it.

Re: Basel weekend cycling group

Myself and possibly a couple of friends plan to meet at 10am by St Johann-rheinweg (google map). I'm aiming to do the whole 60km shebang. Feel free to join for any or all of the route.

Re: Basel weekend cycling group

If Caroline doesn't mind we can meld into her gathering then. In this case we would all meet at 10:00 instead of 9:30 this week (I will update the info on the calendar). It would still be good if people RVSP if they are coming, and add if they are up for the full 60 km or only want to do a smaller distance.

I have at least 1 friend joining possibly more and we are meeting at St Johann-rheinweg (google map). Will we see you there or somewhere else?

Caroline: I think having more than 1 meeting point would be nightmare, so I would edit the post so that everyone that is joining through EF and this thread, gathers at your original meeting point at 10:00.

Re: Basel weekend cycling group

Ouch, my legs... I did the full 60 km (and then some, as I double-covered part of the 1st loop and also came from NW Basel back to the city center).
I thought I could do it in under 4 hours. It seems I was wrong!

Really recommend the event for next year. There were very few places where it wasn't immediately clear where to go (in 60 km that is quite something - still don't know where they get all the volunteers). The sponsors give plenty of freebies (drinks, snacks, sun screen) and if you want you can donate to future events at well signaled locations ("Spende").

Another week.

If there are no other suggestions what about taking the route that was postponed twice already?

Re: Basel weekend cycling group

I thought no one wanted to join up. See the google maps link a couple of posts above: that route passes through a bunch of nice looking locations and should take under 2 hours.

Re: Basel weekend cycling group

I'm just arrived after doing the route.
There was apparently a marathon on, which had Baslerstrasse cut off. We took another road into Binningen and I got completely disoriented (my apologies to Debra).

Eventually we took a downhill and did arrive at Batteriestrasse as I had wanted to - coming from the wrong direction! Sort of hilarious, to the point I even thought there were two like-named streets. Debra then had to go do something else, but having finally found the route I had studied, I went for it.

I climbed uphill for a while (this part of the route is quite steep - I even went to the lowest gear which I had not done in a while), found the Water tower and decided that as I was now alone, I should go there. Went upstairs and took some pictures and a 360 video. Then downhill on the other side, around the green area, passing on the side of the stadium, along the Birs (this is quite a nice stretch of calm road along the river), crossing the Rhein, going next to Rhein and getting cut-off by the runners again. Fortunately this part I was more familiar with than the parts of Binningen near the Schloss, so I didn't get lost this time.

It is quite a nice route, the part going up Batteriestrasse is really the only difficult part but even with stopping and going up to the water tower to see the view it can easily be done under 2 hours.

It's "run to the beat" today. Just back from seeing a couple of friends run their team relay races. There's 5k relays, 10k runs, half and full marathons. Cars and trams diverted all over the place.

Re: Basel weekend cycling group

i have had idiots outside my place all morning beeping the car horns in frustration that the lead driver in the Q isnt moving forward... when runners are on the road and the road is closed by police.

a rather impatiant old guy in his sports car shot thru and then was kindly asked to stop by the police as they wished to admire his wheels

Re: Basel weekend cycling group

I went to Reinach. Not particularly scenic route but was good for some exercise.

I'm still up for cycling around during the colder months, but doesn't seem to be much use keeping the event on the schedule. If anyone is interested in getting together feel free to PM me, or better, leave a message in one of these threads.
