I know the owner . He made very good roti canai himself (including the full technic). I think they have buffet once a month. Can check this out too.
Are you talking about Singapore on Badernerstrasse or the restaurant in Uster?

Maybe we could do another buffet somewhere else and check out the sights and smells of malaysian food in zurich?

Argus - if you're asking about the restaurant on Badenerstrasse called Singapore, see this post.

The one in Uster, please, as it was recommended by a friend.

(This rainy weather is making me hungry again. Mmmm... is the curry pot calling?)

Hey, do you guys think this place is sufficient enough to fit us all:

http://www.kanuclubzuerich.ch/cms/schipfe.html

price and location wise i think is a bargain for zuerich standard. but i think a bit tight if there are 50 of us.

as for food, i am trying to bargain the following from my friend who is a good cook:

for 25-30fr per adults:
- nasi lemak
- sambal udang (to go with the nasi lemak)
- 1 beef dish (perhaps rendang)
- 1 chicken dish (perhaps curry or ayam masak merah)
- 1 vege dish
- 1 type of noodle dish (asam laksa, mi kari or etc)
- 1 or 2 starters (karipap,popia etc)
- dessert (kuihs)
- chicken satay

what do you think? please bear in mind all above will be authentic, homecook and from a very good cook (at least to my tastebud ). her ayam masak merah is a must!!!
Is this 25-30 per person include the Kanu club?

The food sounds AMAZING!

If 20 people each try to bring food for 20 people, we're probably going to have too much food.

And as has been pointed out, CHF20 budget per cook isn't going to produce much - we're going to have 20 different dishes, each feeding maybe 5 people. It would be better to have fewer cooks with each having a bigger budget.
True, but it depends on how many ppl going to attend and what food is going to be brought. Maybe if there are two ppl bringing the same food, that would be ok as well.

We've already had beef rendang and ayam percik, so maybe other beef and chicken dishes? I'd love the grilled style of ayam percik. Ayam masak merah or Ayam madu (as commonly seen in mamak restaurants)? Jalan Alor Chicken Wings? Hainanese Chicken Rice?

For noodles, how about mee goreng mamak? Or Sar hor fun with beef and ginger?

The restaurant is called Noble House in Uster. It has new owner now and the menu has changed also.

25-30 per person. But I am listing the food based on my rough costing calculations + additional profit for the cook la. Or else I am sure she would not want to do it . Maybe I can suggest her to provide the drinks at minimal price also, so that all her sweat will lead to some returns.

As for the kanu club's rental fee, I would say the more people come the better. Then we could see how to allocate the cost.

How about one of these Saturdays (17.05, 24.05, 07.06, 14.06)? Of course these are the dates that I am available .

Nanda, maybe you can help me out to set sort of polling/participants for the events? It will be faster for you to do it since you have done it before .

noble effort but i can't help think that it proves the business case for getting it done by a restaurant , doesn't it ?

Please don't get me wrong .. I think it is a great idea for a pot-luck or picnic or any other BYO food ...... However , if a catered event is called for , then it makes sense that the experts do it , not only for the price but also the convenience ( utensils , cleaning , transportation to name a few ) ....

On another note , I guess not all makan events need to be as big as the other day , right ? I could imagine some of us arranging to check out the local malaysian restaurants , in the name of research .

Re: [Zurich and surroundings] Next malaysian food fest

I agree with Marcashvin.

We can KIV this for Merdeka gathering?

But I guess right now (on my side at least) looking forward for something smaller and outdoor, i.e. picnic/potluck/BBQ. Something in that scale.

Re: [Zurich and surroundings] Next malaysian food fest

Something smaller means how many people? If within 10-15 people, I guess we can make use of someone's garden...any volunteers? . But how do we limit 10-15 people?

Or anybody knows any place where we can picnic? 7 years back I used to picnic by Marzili in Bern. That was so nice....but to secure a place during nice weather is very difficult unless you wait very early in the morning.

I got the impression that Marcashvin wanted to try out restaurants, but you are talking about a potluck... ?

Things certainly don't need to be as big as the previous event but to be honest, it sort of took a life of its own. I was hoping for just 20 people!

There are some nice places (but not covered) especially around Escher-Wyss Platz/Wipkingen. Nice long picnic tables that you could try to get there early to grab.

But then maybe we could just go to the Werdinsel if someone has a trestle table to spare..

Re: [Zurich and surroundings] Next malaysian food fest

Türlersee by Zürich Goldbrunnen Platz has place to swim, picnic and grill, however entry is CHF5 per pax - not sure about group entry, will be cheaper I guess. Then you won't have the hassle of 'fighting' for space. But I guess in high summer it will be crowded anywhere outdoors.

Or just anywhere free (i.e. Nanda's suggestion) ..maybe when we can get a few more willing to go a little early to reserve a spot? I would do it but just 1 person might not be able to cover a big ground. What are we looking for as in time - brunch/lunch/hitea?

Re: [Zurich and surroundings] Next malaysian food fest

Hey.. Selamat Pagi ...

Do we as I think we do - have three options being discussed in parallel?

1. Doing another event like HW but in a different restaurant - possibly the one in Uster?

2. Marish's suggestion about her friend making a homemade buffet

3. Just a potluck picnic

I think it might be easier to follow subsequent discussions if you mention which one you're commenting on.

If we're talking about looking for an outdoor place - is it for option number 2 or option number 3?

Or am the only person who's keen on option 2? Which I think could be a combination between options 1 and 3.

But I really think that if you want to try it- just create an event and see the response via RSVP. Pick a date that is earliest June (let's not do too much too close or July and then see the RSVPs.

It's a lot better than just trying to discuss it amongst us. But of course, to create an event you have to have a clear idea of what's on offer.

(Option 3) If it's a simple potluck then you could use the event to see who's in for the date and decide the place later depending on weather - or just postpone later it if it rains.

(Option 2) If Marish wants to get her friend some business, then also do put up an event (but commercial) but get a place first and be sure to give the total cost. Though this can be chicken and egg problems - how do you know the place without knowing the number of people. So one could put up an event to book a date and discuss the place.

(Option 1) If someone wants to call up the place in Uster or try out the satay party in Hot Wok in the summer, give those guys a ring. Or do it the same way Hot wok was done ... book a date and then discuss the menu.

Just a thought. Seems that we have a few options (let me know if I've missed any) and we should avoid discussing them to death ... Life's too short and food is good

By creating specific events, it makes the idea more concrete, their specifics can be discussed on their events thread and there is a clear number of interested parties for _each_ event.

Also keeps the forum tidy and that's my job

Is that easy to get to by public transport? Though maybe there are only a few of us without cars. But it may be something to think about .... esp if people want to bring some beers and wine and stay 'till late.
