City/Town: Zurich
Event Type: Sports
Meeting Point: Schanzengraben School Yard

RSVP Please Note!

12 places only for next Sunday.

This time we're placing a limit on the number of RSVPs. So far we are still having a lot more people turn up than say they are coming and this is severely interfering with the quality and duration of the games we're getting.

Rotating teams is OK, but when 20 people arrive (in a higgeldy-piggeldy fashion, too 13.00 is 13.00!), get 10 minutes play followed by 20 minutes waiting, the fun significantly decreases.

So perhaps now is the time to say 'if you're not on the list, you can't play'.

It's a measure I have not really wanted to impose, but the success of our little game is a problem which needs addressing. I greatly enjoy the social element and seeing so many faces turn up, but we can always arrange a dedicated and separate 'Beers and fries at Paddy Reillys / El Lokal' social event for Sundays. Isn't it BBQ season, now, too?

Of course there'll be regulars who'll not see this message until the list is closed and this in turn will cause some resentment, but I don't see another way - short of declaring dedicated team lists, which is contrary to the spirit of the game we play - of getting a real game of football. Unless someone, somewhere has a relatively downtown, large, free venue where we could play on a Sunday afternoon..?

I'm looking forward to the thread-storm following this post!

*Please* check here on the day in case we're rained-off or we don't have the numbers to play.

Here's the map link

[There may be others on the pitch when we arrive and if they're kids from the school, we'll have to bribe them or something ( ). The Kids have every right to kick us off - it's their pitch - so please accept we may have to share our game with them. They're usually good lads but the Janitor has his eye on the area and has asked us to respect their play space.]

Thank You!

  • kamka - if the number of participant can be over 12, i will come.

Apparently there will be no need for a revolution this Sunday ( nor re-styling ) as it will be rainy

Hey Lob,

What is the info on the Saturday evening games? Or are they more of a "boys-only" club?

thx.

and do be aware that the showering and changing facilities are shared. Other than that, I am sure the lads won't mind having totty playing

So, girls are welcome but they have to take the mandatory shower together with the boys at the end of the game ?

To be honest I am ignoring the new "rule" and suggesting that other people do the same.
Turn up as normal.
I'd say that is quite in the opposite spirit of what these games are about. I understand that maybe you don't appreciate trying things this way, but "turn up as normal" means a dozen extra people trickling in over an hour and a half, which is the main thing we are trying to avoid.

I am about to spit my dummy, toys well and truly thrown out of the pram etc. etc.

I think, turn up pick 3 teams of 5 people a side and stick to them. If people come later then that's bad luck, they should have been on time.

As for dictating that only 12 people can play I think its a bad idea and shouldn't have been brought up....I'm desperately trying not to be rude, but I will say I think Unclemax has overstepped the bounds here by dictating rules. (sorry about that, I know the intention but its wrong.)

So I am saying turn up as normal and ignore the new "rule" which is pointless.
And by the way the spirit of what these games is about, is a casual kick around on a Sunday for a bunch of lads who want a chat a beer and a bit of sport but know that things aren't going to be taken too seriously, in others words to have a laugh...this seems to be rapidly being undermined and turned into a huge largely unnecessary drama..

Can we clear the thread, start a new one and get back to playing football on Sunday with a beer afterwards.

I think we can all agree with this.

If this is possible then brilliant. Perhaps I've been unlucky, but this hasn't happened the last twice I've been to footy. And it seems to me that Dom has had enough of banging his head against a brick wall, hence the new 'rule'.

If we're gonna do this, then maybe we all need to take more responsibility for making it happen.

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football, Zurich

To be honest if this thread carries on I think it will put everyone off and we will be lucky if 5 people turn up to play.

I also don't have much of a problem with the way it works at the moment, people who want to play can.
If people are fed up with guys joining late and ruining the teams then set a cut off point after the teams are picked and stop people turning up late.

New thread?

Sounds fair - and it seems like most would be in favour.

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football, Zurich

my very basic view on it...its true. everyone can play, have a run around, its fun, whatever.

some smaller things i feel bored with are:

-it takes a bit of time to get teams together,
-teams mix
-i am (to be) called off after 10minutes because others want to play too

its nothing that would stop me from playing there anymore, but i would highly appreciate if we could improve that on whatever base, rule or ritual.

in case we would do it "1st come - 1st serve"-way i believe people dont come at all, because it is at risk one cant play if late.
12 people is a bit of short number i agree
15 people seem to be best for 3 teams->so then for gods sake lets say 15 then.

so how to do it? first 15 by signing in here?
first 15 being on time on the pitch?

Totally agree with what planthead said.

To be honest, there is always going to be confusion and people hanging on the sidelines if teams are constantly mixed and matched.

Mixing and matching can cause the following:

a) confusion about which team a player is in.

b) confusion about if a player is on next time or not, depending on the number of people and new arrivals.

c) some players stay on the pitch after the ten minutes and try to join the next game, effectively trying to play for longer than they should. this means that some who should play next cannot

d) on the flipside some players stay on the sidelines to make sure that everyone else and or new arrivals are getting a game. this also neccessitates team changes.

e) no fixed teams means players feel that they can wander off or leave at will as their spots will be taken.

f) Some shouting and coercion to get people on and off after each ten minute game. While some people (Chris and his MBA spring to mind ) are undoubtedly good at this, id rather have a game where its a bit clearer and it isnt so neccessary.

Now one way to deal with this is to limit the number of players severely, which is what Dom is trying to do. When it goes like that, it probably will work in terms of making an orderly game, but it will leave way too many sour tastes in too many mouths, and can actively discourage people from coming. I do not think that Planthead is exaggerating when he warns that this could fairly destroy the sunday game.

Another way is simply to make sure as much as possible that we play in teams for the session. This has worked pretty well when we stick to teams, I have seen it work well many times last year when we had 15 or 16 people but this year we havent really used the team approach. It isnt perfect, but its maybe prettier than what is being suggested now.

If new people turn up after and can easily be accomodated (eg 10 people turn up initially and 2 are late, one added to each team), then fine. If it gets messy then we reorganise and maybe pick again, but then still stick to those teams after that. It all goes wrong in my opinion when the dynamic is that teams dont matter, and that only a rough rotation is important.

10 people: two teams of 5
11 people: one team of 5, one of 6
12 people: 4,4,4
13 people: 4,4,5
14 people: 5,5,4
15 people: 5,5,5
16 people: 5,5,6
17 people: 6,6,5
18 people: 6,6,6
19 people: 5,5,5,4
20 people: 5,5,5,5
21 people: 5,5,5,6
and so on.

towards the end of the afternoon when people want to leave, then its ok to have a bit more chaos i suppose if some are keen to stay on.

another downside of the team approach is if one team ends up way too weak or strong against the other and this leads to poor imbalanced games. However, in the past this has always been fairly easy to spot very early on, and you just correct it by swapping a stronger player for a weaker one.

Oh well, thats just some more thoughts from me. Maybe im wrong, maybe i should support the 12 idea. At the moment it doesnt feel right to me but I will support consensus from you guys for sure if we can find some.

Kevin.

major point! and important when it comes to having a good play, good games. thats furthermore important to me why having more or less fixed teams.

Its when we have 4+ teams that this gets silly, imo. With 3 teams its a welcome break, with 4 its 10 mins on, 20 mins off.

Yep - right up to 18 players and you're ok in my eyes. Each team then plays with a sub which can be rotated at any time..... no problem.

that pitch can live with up to 6 people per team without subs if you ask me. 4 or 5 per team is better of course.

If there are more than 18 players we could then play a match of Calcio Storico Fiorentino

no, 6 is far too much. we had it once and you could barely move.
5 is the limit in my eyes. subs was always on my mind, but we never did.
this would also stop mixed teams.

So does this mean we're saying that an RSVP limit of 18 is acceptable?

Or that we should have no limit, and hope that more often than not, we come in at 18 players or under?
