Meeting Point: Schanzengraben School Yard

RSVP Please Note!

12 places only for next Sunday.

This time we're placing a limit on the number of RSVPs. So far we are still having a lot more people turn up than say they are coming and this is severely interfering with the quality and duration of the games we're getting.

Rotating teams is OK, but when 20 people arrive (in a higgeldy-piggeldy fashion, too 13.00 is 13.00!), get 10 minutes play followed by 20 minutes waiting, the fun significantly decreases.

So perhaps now is the time to say 'if you're not on the list, you can't play'.

It's a measure I have not really wanted to impose, but the success of our little game is a problem which needs addressing. I greatly enjoy the social element and seeing so many faces turn up, but we can always arrange a dedicated and separate 'Beers and fries at Paddy Reillys / El Lokal' social event for Sundays. Isn't it BBQ season, now, too?

Of course there'll be regulars who'll not see this message until the list is closed and this in turn will cause some resentment, but I don't see another way - short of declaring dedicated team lists, which is contrary to the spirit of the game we play - of getting a real game of football. Unless someone, somewhere has a relatively downtown, large, free venue where we could play on a Sunday afternoon..?

I'm looking forward to the thread-storm following this post!

*Please* check here on the day in case we're rained-off or we don't have the numbers to play.

Here's the map link

[There may be others on the pitch when we arrive and if they're kids from the school, we'll have to bribe them or something ( ). The Kids have every right to kick us off - it's their pitch - so please accept we may have to share our game with them. They're usually good lads but the Janitor has his eye on the area and has asked us to respect their play space.]

Thank You!

Personally (if anyone cares what I think), I'd say we remove the limit, but strongley encourage people to arrive on time.

If we had a limit, and we did want to give it a try, I'd say lets make it 15, as I think 3 teams of 5 is the best format.

However, that said, I'm easy (cheap too).

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football, Zurich

Greetings

Thread-storm in a teacup? Perhaps. The problem with limiting numbers is it's bound to annoy someone, sometime, and it's certainly not ideal (having rules).

We're facing many more players on Sundays now and the issue is where to draw a line. I for one don't like waiting 20 minutes before a game of 10 minutes, then waiting around for 20 minutes again. It sucks and it's not fun. I notice I'm also one of the few to let others play before me when numbers are whack

Punctuality speaks for itself.

When we say a limit of 15 players, twenty will attend - but we should expect this, and lower the limit accordingly. Anyone willing to tell late-comers they're not welcome to play? Plantheads suggestion of arriving 15 minutes early is a good one(!), but even this will run into the same difficulties.

I'm lovin' the idea of Bibs. Except my wash day is every seven years...

I by no means take any criticism to heart - y'all know me well enough by now - and should anyone else wish to take 'ownership' of arranging these games, please feel free. It's very little effort.

We are technically trespassing on that ground and the kids have priority. Screw this factor up and we screw up all future opportnities to play there. The Janitor - a fair fellow - was mightily suspicious when he came over once and saw 25+ adults standing around; we have to be reasonable.

We have discussed this topic several times before; for regulars who feel left out, may I direct you to previous events on the calendar to re-read what was discussed then?

Perhaps another solution would be to stop publicising this event on the calendar and have the regulars / motivated newbies come along by word-of-mouth? The very rare occassions we're rained off could be dealt with via, oh hang on, this is going to get tricky...

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football, Zurich

Er, I'd like to apologise for not having noticed there was a page 2 and 3 to this thread before replying . However, my reply above sums up what I'm feeling. It is a pain to have to try and do something, but the game will lose all interest - to me at least - if it continues with the current swamping of players and limited playing opportunity. Having rules may taste bitter but the 40 minutes broken play in a 120 minute game sucks already.

Remember the good ol' days of developing football skill and fitness? We were all improving last year - er, well I did a little, at least - and we earned the pints. Now we're going to the pub because we're bored waiting.

Somebody needs a metaphorical whistle to at least try to maintain order out of (potential) chaos. Please please please suggest alternatives that also factor in the human element (ie, ask people a thousand times and you'll still have to tell them again).

You've just completely summed up how I feel about the whole thing.

Maybe we haven't waited long enough to see if the numbers level out.

Personally I still think some kind of limit is workable (even if it means I miss out sometimes), but not if everyone is against it.

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football, Zurich

i thought about it again and i truely believe that if we build 3 teams of 5 and excess/spare players will be a sub, then its all set. the prob is then only to make sure that each player will go off once in a while, but our fitness will set the limit anyhow.

as soon the subs can build a team together, we have a 4th team of 5.

kids: maybe its just me, but i saw them only once down there?
i will talk to them to find a solution that they show up 3ish.

bibs=checking out ebay (ochsner sport charges 20CHf/shirt)

http://cgi.ebay.ch/Kennzeichnungshem...dZp1638Q2em122

so its about 7 chf for each shirt. how much shall we buy? 10?
that would make 70CHF.

I'd hang fire for now mate - until we know how this one plays out at least.

When we talk about picking teams at the start, and sticking with them, bibs would obviously make things much easier - but I dunno if we really really need them. If we do decide to go ahead, then I'm happy to stump up something towards them.

As soon as the fourth team comes in though, thats when we all start spending more time sunbathing, than playing football .

Think about it, even if the footy was a well oiled machine, where there was no break in between games, you could only ever expect to play 30 mins per hour with 4 teams - but with the inevitable delays? In reality you're talking about then only playing 20 mins per hour.

20 mins playing, 40 mins sunbathing.

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football, Zurich

How about:

Sign up, show up on time = you play
Show up on time = if there is room, you play
Don't show up on time = don't play, OR find a team who will play you

Teams are set at the start, and if more people show up after they are set, then its up to the individual team if they want to add subs to their group.

ie- the number of teams is set at the start, so no more re-organizations over game-time.

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football, Zurich

well colin,
you are stepping into a wee bit o' drama, but all should be well, the pitch we play on is basically rubber, so if the ground is wet at game time, don't bother to show.

Otherwise, in case you haven't battled through this thread...if you want to play.....show up on time.

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football, Zurich

For those looking for a game this weekend and scared that Sunday may be rained out you can check out the game today (Saturday) 17.00-19.00 up at Fifa, we are still a few short to get a game, would need 10 people confirmed by 12:30, so far there are 7.
