Meeting Point: Schanzengraben School Yard

RSVP Please Note!

12 places only for next Sunday.

This time we're placing a limit on the number of RSVPs. So far we are still having a lot more people turn up than say they are coming and this is severely interfering with the quality and duration of the games we're getting.

Rotating teams is OK, but when 20 people arrive (in a higgeldy-piggeldy fashion, too 13.00 is 13.00!), get 10 minutes play followed by 20 minutes waiting, the fun significantly decreases.

So perhaps now is the time to say 'if you're not on the list, you can't play'.

It's a measure I have not really wanted to impose, but the success of our little game is a problem which needs addressing. I greatly enjoy the social element and seeing so many faces turn up, but we can always arrange a dedicated and separate 'Beers and fries at Paddy Reillys / El Lokal' social event for Sundays. Isn't it BBQ season, now, too?

Of course there'll be regulars who'll not see this message until the list is closed and this in turn will cause some resentment, but I don't see another way - short of declaring dedicated team lists, which is contrary to the spirit of the game we play - of getting a real game of football. Unless someone, somewhere has a relatively downtown, large, free venue where we could play on a Sunday afternoon..?

I'm looking forward to the thread-storm following this post!

*Please* check here on the day in case we're rained-off or we don't have the numbers to play.

Here's the map link

[There may be others on the pitch when we arrive and if they're kids from the school, we'll have to bribe them or something ( ). The Kids have every right to kick us off - it's their pitch - so please accept we may have to share our game with them. They're usually good lads but the Janitor has his eye on the area and has asked us to respect their play space.]

Thank You!

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football, Zurich

In case the squiggly black shapes above don't make sense, we're limiting the game next week to 12 players only.

Please understand if you add your name after we have twelve, it will be removed. If this is the case, put yourself on the 'Maybe' list and it's a case of first come, first served for places. We *expect* people to play as fair on the list as can be found on the pitch.

Everyone is welcome. I hope this new rule doesn't cause too much anguish but we need to achieve a balance between playing football for a couple of hours and sitting around for forty minutes an hour watching others play...

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football, Zurich

1) If it must be, then why 12 and not 15?

2) why are you looking forward to the thread storm?

3) why not discuss this measure with us before imposing it?

4) presumably then the little kids cant play when they turn up at 1.30?

5) no one was sitting around for 40 minutes that i saw?

Well, in the end i dont agree with this 12 limit. I could imagine 20 might even be a good idea, but 12 is way too low.

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football, Zurich

ultimately the nettle had to be grasped......

and if there are enough maybe's, then there's no reason that a second game couldn't start after the first one, say at 14:30-15:00. That would be up to the maybe's.

You only need eight for an excellent game on that pitch.

Excellent point - although I think 3 teams of 4 players is absolutely optimal on that pitch, 15 would be more inclusive.

Also a good point, although there was some brief dicussion of this yesterday, some more consulation with the long term players would be nice. We used to do this more I remember.

Perhaps 40 mins is over stating it, but surely we must get back to having only 3 teams, to minimise the standing around? Apart from anything else, its bad physically to be stopping and starting so much.

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football, Zurich

i dont mind the exact numbers and go with everything that keeps me/us playing more often with less stop-n-go. im a bit of a team player, so that 4-5 stick together and its not that every now and then these teams break apart because 1 or 2 play in another set up.

the best for me would be 16 so we have 4 teams of 4 players and we could do a propper tournament like game.

what i never understood is, why e.g. a team of 6 players send 4 on the pitch and substitutes players, like... lets say after 5 ball possesions or the scorer of a goal goes off and so on? would it make easier instead that 3 "leftovers" have to look to fill their team to have a 5er together. then this "who hasnt played yet?" would be over.

fazit: to have limited slots up to a certain number of players would be an improvement. lets do it.

We'll I guess the line has been drawn. I'd say lets give it a go. I would however say that 15 may work better, but its all good.

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football, Zurich

It seems like such a headache sometimes just to organise ourselves into separate teams, and then remember whose playing with who - especially when we seem to have a slow trickle of players turning up, right up to 45 mins late.

I play in a game similar during the week, where they have different coloured bibs, so you just hand them out at the start to the people that turn up, and when the bibs are gone, they're gone. That way everyone knows whose team they're on, and there's really far less confusion.

I'd be ceratinly happy to put my hand in my pocket for a bib, if I thought we could organise things more easily this way. At the moment we're trying to organise 15-20 people on-the-fly into separate teams, and its a bit of a mess really.

I think the effort that Uncle Max has made in organising the Sunday footy gives him the right to try and make it more enjoyable for those who turn up.

There is always the Saturday evening games at the Zoo to join in on if you're desperate for a game - or get your name down sharpish.

I would also suggest that only single sign-ups are permitted. Being first to sign up with 11 mates coming will get someone a good shoeing

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football, Zurich

respectfully lob, you have never even attended the sunday game, as far as i know.

therefore i would say that my attendance since the very first sunday game game gives me the right to àt least suggest discussing organisational matters, if that would be ok with you?

anyhow, i think dom and i get on well enough, and he will take my comments in the spirit in which they are intended.

respectfully, I was actually the one to tell you where that pitch was and thus consider myself the grandfather of the Sunday kick-about

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football, Zurich

i remember well enough, and I remember thanking you for that suggestion. However, that is hardly relevant here.

I think we are all trying to make the game more enjoyable for those who turn up, and my approach to that is simply that only allowing 12 people does not really allow that many to turn up in the first place. i think it will hurt business. thats my opinion, nothing more and nothing less.

perhaps lob you should come down one sunday for a game, it would be nice to meet you, and then you could also have an informed opinion

that last comment should also be taken in the spirit in which it was intended.

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football, Zurich

oh believe me I do see your point. From the footy I've been involved in, there has always been a core and that core is important to keep the happiest. If I still lived in Zurich, I would be there every time, trust me on that

Definitely true, but don't forget that the very same game was happening before Uncle Max began organising it. We were already off and going before Dom became involved. Having said that, he has organised and publicised the game really well via the RSVP (the thread we had was spiralling out of control), but the fact is that without krlock and another half dozen of us, there wouldn't have been anything for Uncle Max to improve.

All I would say is there are about 6 or 8 of us that must've played 20+ times since it started - we'd just like a say, thats all. You've gotta keep those people on board.....

I'm definitely gonna come along to the FIFA Saturday night game at some point, I've just had my hands full so far since it started - but I'm looking forward to giving it a go, and I know a few of the other lads are too.

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football, Zurich

I think besides maybe having too many players, a large part of the problem has been people showing up way after we've started, in my opinion, this is the biggest disruption, causing teams to be reorganized every 15 minutes.

Depending how the next couple get-togethers go, perhaps just limiting the players to whoever has shown up on time might work to improve the games. A few teams can be set at the start and kept for the whole time.

I for one would like to thank UncleMax for his organization of the event, and appreciate his efforts to keep some flow to the sunday games.

Hey Lob,

What is the info on the Saturday evening games? Or are they more of a "boys-only" club?

thx.

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football, Zurich

I too would would like to thank Uncle Max for organizing week in and week out.

The bad thing is that now in order to get a game we need to commit to playing a week in advance.

We may run into some problems as we don't own the pitch, if we limit the number of people, and the people who didnt sign up decide to show up earlier and are already there can we really kick them off. Additionally, even with the best planning if the kids come we will have to get off and may not get a game.

Sorry for being so negative, I'm willing to to give it a shot.

I do however feel that this week the number of people was not really the problem. Rather people showing up late, (I was one of them) and people not being ready or wanting to go on when the games ended, (we need to have the next team ready to step on once the gme ends and if people are not ready then they can wait for the next game).

Sorry if this is posted twice, as After I finished it the first time and went to post it disappeared.

Re: Sunday Afternoon Five-a-Side Football, Zurich

I saw an open football grass field with goals and everything, just near to the freeway entry by the Migros at the Pfingstweidstrasse, actually there are three of them

http://maps.google.ch/?ie=UTF8&ll=47...09999&t=h&z=17

Would they maybe be free for us on Sunday ? It's worth to check it out

Click on the link and chose "Satellite" View and you'll see them.

Two other open football fields with goals by Kilchberg I see allways when I go to work.. they are allways emtpy... let's hope they are also between 1-3pm on Sundays
