You are invited to the

Great Lausanne EnglishForum BBQ Picnic Party

Saturday July 5th 2008 from 3pm until the sun goes down!

This is going to be THE event of the summer, so we hope everyone can make it. (And if you can’t, your excuse had better be a darn good one! ) This will be a great opportunity for EF-ers from all over the country to gather in one place to meet the faces behind the names, eat some excellent food, and have an awesome time. And what better place for a party! We’ll be on the shore of Lake Geneva, with a panoramic view of the Alps, a beach, grassy fields, and lots and lots of food and drink for everyone. Best of all, 100% of the proceeds from this party will go towards the continued running of EnglishForum.

Who can come
This family-friendly party is open to everyone, regardless of age. Bring your children, partners, friends, and yourselves too! There is a limit of 100 adults, so RSVP as early as possible. The cut-off date for RSVP-ing is one week before the event (June 28th).

Cost
The price is a mere 20 CHF per person, payable at the door, and children under 12 are free. Entry includes a burger and a hot dog from the BBQ (meat or veggie; please pm one of us in advance if you want veggie), side dishes (crisps, salads, etc.), and non-alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic beverages will be readily available on-site in exchange for donations to the forum.

Activities
We'll be out in the open and near the beach, so bring your frisbees, swimsuits, picnic blankets, lawn chairs, gazebos and sunscreen. There will be activities geared towards children (games, entertainment, juggling, balloons, etc.), and for the big kids, there will be beach volleyball, a tug-of-war, and a few fun surprises.

Travel and Accommodation

The event will be held in Vidy, just a few kms from the center of Lausanne. There is more detailed information about how to get there by public transport or by car in this post about travel options. To find out about accommodation, see this post.

Fundraising
We want to keep the excellent resource that is EnglishForum going, and in the spirit of Mark, its founder, will dedicate all profits from the party towards the operating costs of the forum. There will be a few fund raising events staged throughout the day, including an auction, so please tell us if you could donate an auction item. Items to be auctioned off will be announced in this thread once we finalize details.

How you can help
We already have a team of dedicated volunteers working on organizing this, but we’d love to have more hands on board. We would particularly appreciate donations of some food items (salads, snacks, etc.); please send a PM to the food coordinator SophieNam if you'd like to contribute anything. We would also gratefully accept donations of any auction items: currently we have a curry dinner, a flight in an aeroplane, and a date with a dashing man up for grabs!

If you'd like to donate your time and effort on the day to assist with set-up and clean up, please contact the party coordinator Joanna.

What if it Rains?
Although Lausanne averages an impressive 1900+ hours of sunshine per year, it is possible that there will be some rain on the day. However, this will NOT dampen the party spirits in any way. The party will go on, and we expect to see you there!

After the fact...
Once the sun goes down, you are welcome to continue the festivities into the evening. Why not experience some of Lausanne’s famous nightlife firsthand? Some of the locals will be happy to show you the most happening places. Or, check out a show at the world famous Montreux Jazz Festival, which will be taking place then just up the lake from Lausanne http://www.montreuxjazz.com/

For those wanting to get out to see more of the beautiful landscape around Lausanne, ChrisW and a few others will be organizing a leisurely group road cycling outing either the morning before or the day after the event (this will be announced separately in the forum).

In conclusion
What more can we say? This is going to be a truly epic event, and we in Lausanne are looking forward to hosting guests from all over the country! To keep up-to-date with the status of the party planning (including auction items, games and activities, and any additional relevant details) keep your eyes on Joanna's post which is directly below. She'll be updating it with any new information.

RSVPs are now open, please only sign up if you are genuinely intending to come - See you July 5th!

If you still need help, contact the Team:

Re: The Great Lausanne EF BBQ Party!

Trouble is, we'll be updating the listing with a load of useful info next week, and from what I can tell you lose the RSVPs when you edit an event...? I'll change the setting after we've put the info up.

Nice to hear that you're keen to come

Re: The Great Lausanne EF BBQ Party!

nice to hear that. I always have a feeling that the core EF team is in Zurich basing on the substantial events posted in the forum.

Credit to 'Heather' for organizing weekly gathering in pub but people like us (with baby) could hardly be able to join. I look forward to the BBQ event....and hope that baby is welcomed

Re: The Great Lausanne EF BBQ Party!

Location
We’re holding the event in the park in Vidy, behind the beach (see this map). Vidy is a couple kms west of Lausanne. If you’re coming from out of town then you can take a train to Lausanne, then take a bus, then walk the last bit through the park. If you prefer to drive then the park is just off of the motorway. If you’re coming from within Lausanne then there are three different bus routes that pass by, or you could just take a stroll or cycle down to the lake (see this post for more info on getting there from Ouchy).

Train
Obviously, full schedule information is available from the SBB website, but here are a few examples. From Zurich it takes about 2h10mins and there are one or two direct trains per hour. From Bern it takes about 1h05mins and there are two per hour. From Geneva it take about 35mins and there are five per hour. From Montreux it takes about 20mins and there are four per hour. When buying your train ticket, you can buy a combined ticket for the train and the buses in Lausanne; it's called a city-ticket and you'll just need zone 11 in Lausanne.

Bus
Buses number 1, 2, and 4 all stop nearby at the Maladière bus stop. For full information, see the Transit Lausanne website.
If you’re arriving by train then take the number 1 bus from outside the station: Go out of the main entrance (on the north side, closest to platform 1), the bus stop will be on the other side of the street and a bit to the left. Maladière is the last stop, so it will be displayed as the destination on the bus. Buses are every 7 minutes, and take 9 minutes to get to Maladière (the last stop, one after Montoie).
If you don't have the combined train and bus ticket then you’ll need a ticket for the central zone 11. For people with a half-fare card (halbtax / demi-tarif) or children, hit the zone 11 button on the right-hand side of the screen on the machine (2.00 CHF).
From the Maladière bus stop go across the pedestrian bridge at the back of the bus turn-around area. Stay to the left until you hit the main road (Route de Chavannes), then turn right onto that road, heading towards the Shell petrol/gas station. Stay on that road until Chemin de la Bois de Vaux, which is signposted for camping, CIO (with the Olympic rings), 'Ruines romaines', and 'Musee romaine', turn left onto that road. Follow the road under the motorway to the mini-roundabout on the other side. Go straight across that and to the right you should see a path heading into the park that you should take. Follow the path for about 300 metres going parralel with the lake. We'll be in the fields/trees behind the beach. You should see us or our signs/balloons/etc - just look for anything that says 'EF BBQ'. We'll be a large group of people with some flags from English-speaking nations hanging nearby (bring your own to add to the collection - we have flags from the UK, England, USA, and Canada so far).
To return to the train station afterwards, there is a number 1 bus from Maladière every 7 minutes until 7pm, every 10 minutes until 9pm, and every 15 minutes until midnight (the Saturday schedule is in this pdf).

Taxi
You can take a taxi from outside the main entrance of the train station. Ask the driver to take you to "Vidy Plage" (= Vidy beach) and show him the map. The cost will probably be about 20 CHF.

Driving
Google maps gives good driving directions. Go to the website, hit “Get directions”, enter your starting address and make your destination “Vidy, Switzerland”. That will take you directly to the car park described below. However, it is also straightforward to do it without Google:
If you’re arriving from the west (e.g., Geneva) then take the A1 motorway towards Lausanne.
If you’re arriving from the east (e.g., Montreux) then take the A9 motorway towards Lausanne. At exit 19 merge onto the A1 towards “Geneva, Lausanne-Sud, Lausanne-Crissier”.
If you’re arriving from the north (e.g, Neuchatel, Bern, Zurich) then get onto the A1 motorway heading south.
From the A1 motorway you need to take exit 17 onto the A1a “Lausanne-Sud, Lausanne-Ouchy, Lausanne-Centre”. Stay on that until it ends at a big roundabout about 4 kms later. Take the first exit off of the roundabout, in the direction of “Ouchy”, this is Avenue de Rhodanie. Take the first right, which will be about 300 metres after the roundabout, just before the tennis courts, the road is called Avenue Pierre de Coubertin, it is sign-posted as 'Port de Vidy'.
From there on, you are in the park, and there is lots of parking, all of which has no restrictions on length of stay during the weekend.
All of the main parking areas are marked on the map with a blue 'P', but there is also parking along the roads in the park. Some of the parking areas are much closer to where we're having the BBQ than others, so follow these directions if you want to get a bit closer: Keep going along that road for a few hundred metres until it splits, the left side is marked as going to 'Port de Vidy' and the right/straight option going to 'Ruines et musee romaines'. There is a parking area to the left, but it is better to stay to the right/straight and keep going along the road for a bit. After a few hundred more metres, you'll find a mini-roundabout, go straight across it (unless you are camping, in which case turn left because that is the campground).
Shortly after the mini-roundabout there is another parking area on the left. If you find a place there then take it, but if not then keep going along the street. There is parking possible on both sides of the street, so take a spot if you find it. If you find a small side-road on the left going down towards the lake, then try that because there is a small parking area at the end of the road which is the closest to where the BBQ will be. This is where the biggest 'P' is on the attached map. If you still have not found a space then if you keep going then there is one more parking area on the left just before you join the main road.
After you have parked, hopefully you can use the map to get to us from wherever you now are. But also look out for our signs/balloons/etc - just look for anything that says 'EF BBQ'. We'll be a large group of people with some flags from English-speaking nations hanging nearby (bring your own to add to the collection - we have flags from the UK, England, USA, and Canada so far).

See you all there!

Hey great idea! I'm up for this. I think it's great we have an event where all ages can join, we do seem to have a lot of boozy evenings. It'll be fun to have a boozy daytime event

Will there be a Frisbee?

I guess we can arrange logistics for the Zurich-region people once the RSVP list is up.

Good on you!

my baby weighs 7.2 kg so if you got a huge appetite...

alternatively, you could baby sit my little princess on that day in order to 'prove' your passion towards baby You'll find a lot of fun changing diapers and enjoying her "singing" --scream, scream and scream; cry, cry and cry

Thanks for organising this, it sounds great - I'll bring a 4 yr old girl and 8 yr old boy, so if anyone else has similar (or any) age kids for them to play with..?
