Yeah, I know I'm a fraud.
A fraud is generally perpetrated by someone who knows that they are misrepresenting the truth.

This social group you wish to make contact with, do you mean you wish to join a social group comprised of aliens, or a group that meets to discuss the existence of aliens?

Not that I can help you get in contact with either, but the desire intrigues me somehow, earthlings really are fascinating.

I wish it's the former but I guess I can only expect the latter. Now you are a fraud because I thought you could put me in touch with either (kidding) What kind of aliens did you refer to?

I was referring to the type of aliens that you referred to when you replied to my request for clarification.

Are you always this focused?

<cough> Either you are unaware of the meaning of the words "hide" and "obviously", or that sentence is in need of not an alien, but rather a comma.

I did so well not to respond to the astronomy and ham radio post in this thread, yet I feel myself being drawn inexorably into a trap.

No need to feel bad. Some eschew obfuscation, others have a predilection for it.

I just google translated perspicacious too. I think that's the trap talking to a doctor in philosophy...

Re: Hobbies anyone?

I assure you, I have neither a PhD, nor a DPhil, moving here precluded that. Cicada is certainly interesting.

Just being me, which is pretty much a full time job.

Strange world, I assure you I can write the above words without changing anything...

Now, I guess ... time to return to alien hunting as a hobby; and yes, that Cicada riddle is interesting...wish I had enough knowledge to solve such riddles.

Having availed myself of both a liberal arts and a technical education, things like the Cicada riddles strike a certain harmonic vibration in my mind. OTOH, if they are so damned smart then why are there spelling mistakes on their homepage?

I'd say spelling mistakes and intelligence are not perfectly correlated. But my question is: how do you even know that they truly exist?

Re: Hobbies anyone?

There's a story about someone who solved the first riddle . He couldn't catch the deadline --a sad fail. The things involved in solving it are extraordinarily difficult, at least for me.
Btw I suppose someone should open an EF Conspiracy&Riddles thread

If one person has a thought, then thought and the thinker exist.

If a language develops between two persons, then the language and both persons exist.

Their use of language would seem to indicate that there are minds behind it.

Their reference to known works, however cryptic, would seem to indicate that they have spent time doing similar things to myself.

If the riddle is interesting enough, does it matter?

Hmn... "truly exist" do you mean as opposed to "falsely exist"? Compare this to, say, aliens.

Falsely exist means they pretend they truly exist in what they claim. Maybe it's just two people making a big joke out there. It picked up my curiosity though.

It matters for people who solve the riddle for a purpose.

I'm looking to get into astronomy too, or precisely aliens... Would love to know if there's any social group for that.
There is the nutjob Group SETI - no PhD needed and if you have one you can run around calling yourself "Doctor" when you call the local Police to Report an alien 'sighting" and you want them to think you're not a nutjob/quack. But...you really are.

We can work together and may find monkeys wearing tin-foil caps circling Uranus.

Re: Hobbies anyone?

Having seen how the first riddle is solved, all I can say is it's simply amazing. Wikipedia lists the references and places involved. Purpose? Funding? Who is/are behind this? Total mystery...
