Never been there, never will (crowds just aren't my thing), but I have friends and family who love it, from 8 to 80, including several who run floats.

Same here, crowds are a nightmare to me.
Been once though (because I do (almost) everything once at least) and we kind of managed not to get squashed.

For people who like crowds I understand it's fun. It's definitely exceptional and - as someone mentioned - you don't need any money, which again makes it exceptional.

Re: Zurich street parade 2016

Can't see myself going back for a while. The last couple of times I went were a nightmare when the sun went down... people literally chucking glass bottles on the floor so that the girls were cutting their feet, guys grabbing the girls we were with, guys randomly spraying beer like champagne everywhere. It was more stress than fun.

That starts long before the sun sets. Last time I went, I saw the first few "unmanageably drunk" people at 16.30 and the random grabbing (which is frequently outright sexual assault) is standard as soon as you are in a crowded situation. The tone is just much more agressive overall and people are already getting drunk on the way there. It's a shame, as I enjoy electronic music and being able to dance out in the sunshine, but it's just unpleasant now.

Which is why mega-biker meets bug me.

Been to WDW twice, the second time only to remind me why I hated the first time.

Fun event.

I usually go to the Bau au Lac garden party which is not crowded and has a great view of the parade. You can eat and drink as much as you like from 2pm to 9pm; not a cheap event of course.
Anyway sold out for this year.

Video here.
first of all the "party" is pretty lame. agglo farmers getting smashed off their faces by anything that gives a bang to outdated "EDM", elektronische deppen mucke. 1 million people of which 999.900 are bystanders, just like these wannabes from agglo goldküste in pink polos with man buns at this bauer o *uck 250chuffs garden "lounge" glotzpodest. get your botox ass down to the floor and party instead of your exalted coke caused "whooohowww" directed to the plebs parade while sipping overpriced möet. stösschen!

Swisstobe has become a little unpopular
Re: Zurich street parade 2016

Way back in 2011, my husband and I went not knowing what to expect. We had the time of our lives, the DJ's were amazing and I literally danced with Boy George. We went a couple times after, and it was nowhere near the same. EDM took over and the scene hasn't been the same since, that or I'm just getting old. Much more of a rock and roll gal anyway...

Either way, I would get there as early as I can and get out before the sun sets... it really turns into a shady scene with broken beer bottles everywhere and the respect you normally see for the community in Switzerland goes out the window for a few odd hours.

Re: Zurich street parade 2016

I’ll be going and i’m looking forward to it, the comments about after sundown concern me though as i’ve been planning to stay all night this time and haven’t really done it before. My first was 2015 and i was terrible at pacing myself so was done by about 9 o’clock the next year i was out of the country and last year i did go but had planned to leave after the trucks anyway as i’d promised to take the kids to seenachsfest. This year i have no commitments and feel more prepared for a 12+hours party, it is worth it right? Shoes with 3cm soles enough, or should i wear boots? Are there any particular places where all the glass-smashy, butt-grabby bellends like to congregate or is it just kind of unavoidable?

At nights the streets themselves are more quit and people spread out to the many afterparties or go home, I myself really like the Rote Fabriek when it comes to afterparties (and it lasted till at least Sunday evening).

Boots would be overdone, and perhaps it is a matter of perspective, I'm used to things like Dutch queens/kings day and find the atmosphere here very friendly with not such a huge amount of glass everywhere.

We have a 2 years old and we'd like to show him the fireworks. Since his bedtime is ~9 PM, and the show is ~ 10 PM, we'd like to get back home as soon as possible, so we're thinking of taking the car to Rapperswil, but I suspect it's gonna be really crowded.
Are there some view points for the fireworks which don't require us going into town (preferably on Pfäffikon side)?

It's mainly in the central sardine-can areas like Bellevue... if you keep to the outer parts in Niederdorf etc it's probably much better.

Re: Zurich street parade 2016

I usually do flee the town.

I once was there the whole day - dawn to dusk - reporting for SonntagsBlick.

Getting my own tinnitus, interviews with intoxicated people, it stank - and that was it for me. Never again.
