City/Town: Zurich
Event Type: Other
Meeting Point: Albisrieden Tram 3 Terminus (Püntstr.)

The Uetliberg is a wonderful resource on the doorstep of the City - miles of paths through woodland offering fabulous views with the promise of a Bratwürst at the top.

This Friday looks set to be dry so why not put your backside in gear and come for a leisurely walk up the hill? A bit of fresh air and exercise will put a glow in your cheeks and it needn‘t cost a penny.

The route takes under two hours at a slow pace with breaks when we see a free bench. It can be done a lot quicker but we‘ll go at a gentle rate. Perhaps a light lunch and walk down again and we should be done by mid afternoon.

You‘ll need stout shoes and a few layers. There are water fountains on the way but you may wish to bring a small bottle and enough toffees to share.

I walk up every week or so and never get tired of the forest. I look forward to meeting anybody who‘d like to join.

Note: the paths are not suitable for people in wheelchairs, prams or the infirm. If you‘d like to join us but can‘t do the walk we could arrange to meet you at the station at the top. Please send me a private message to make a plan.

2nd Note: this is an inclusive event but if you wish to bring hiking sticks please have the rubber tips on the bottom so there‘s no click-click-click; your companions thank you in advance

Tram 3 / Bus 88 to Albisrieden. I‘ll be waiting at the bench opposite the St. Jakob bakery in a green jacket not holding a rose. There‘s nothing else there so you won’t get lost.

This is a delightful way to spend a few hours. The smells, colours and peacefulness are awesome. Come down again feeling energized and motivated. Highly recommended. :-)

Re: A Walk up the Uetliberg

Tomorrow‘s weather looks set to be similar to today‘s and looking out of my office window I‘m itchy to getting out into the forest and up the hill.

If you‘re looking for a reason to log off and get into the wintery sunshine come along tomorrow. Everyone welcome.

Re: A Walk up the Uetliberg

Thanks to those who came along today; it‘s amazing to hear your stories and to learn more about the World.

We took a meandering way up the misty hill, going off piste to see some unusual corners of the forest and get a sense of being away from it all. The idea to build a fire and enjoy our provisions together while enjoying the slightly obscured view made my day. My clothes have that lovely wood smoke aroma.

I had no idea Polish soldiers built the paths we take for granted; local history rocks.

Having arranged a fair few events on EF in the past I know there are always more people lurking who are yet to register. I hope to see a few new names on here in the coming days: you‘ve all so much to offer.

Looking forward to the next ramble. Have a good weekend.

Re: A Walk up the Uetliberg

The weather looks a bit lumpy this week but let‘s see how next week develops and take it from there. I‘d be delighted to have a regular walking group evolve;

edit: hit Submit too soon

...A gentle walk up a hill is accessible to most and a good way to fit nature, fresh air and exercise into the day. Maybe next Friday?

Re: A Walk up the Uetliberg

Unfortunately Fridays don’t work for me - and probably for the next few weekends, time is taken up with Fasnacht around the corner. But keep posting them and who knows.

Edit:

I take it your working pattern allows regular Fridays off.

Re: A Walk up the Uetliberg

Certainly a nice hike but last time spoilt for me (some years ago) by suicidal mountain bike riders in full body armour who seemed bent on hurtling down without giving any quarter.

Re: A Walk up the Uetliberg

The Judge Dredd wannabes in their lycra romper suits are a pain in the <automoderated>. I hasten to add the ones I encounter are no doubt a subset of the otherwise responsible majority.

You do realise having a go at mountain bikers is second only to mentioning dogs and smoking in SBB stations as an EF Friday Thread Starter.

Re: A Walk up the Uetliberg

There‘s been a lot of progress with the shared use paths, thanks to the 'Uetliberg Charta' - an agreement between the various interest groups who utilise the hill - and resources provided for dedicated mountain biking trails, away from the popular walking paths.

I set the above event for a Friday as indeed I‘m generally free on Fridays and find the weekends a bit busier in the forest. There are people who can‘t make weekends and may appreciate the opportunity for some recreation and socialising away from the weekend commitments.

However, as this is a free event and not dependent on a specific day, anyone is able to arrange a walk. I made it Friday as it suited me but if anybody wishes to arrange another walk at another time all the better. The more the merrier.

It‘s just a walk up the hill; the simplicity is the charm. Get some fresh air, meet a few people, enjoy the nature on our doorstep.
