SIBERIA AND RURAL AMERICA
SIDE
BY
SIDE The mythologies of Siberia and rural America could not be further apart, one a catch-all term for banishment and frigid despair, the other a Hollywood dream of neighborliness and quaint town squares. The photographer, ANDREAS HORVATH, who has traveled widely in both regions now places them side by side, and fleshes out surprising common ground: a shared frontier history of colonization and exploitation, the constant battle against the brute forces of nature . . . and perhaps a sense of melancholy over faded glory engraved in peoples´ faces on both sides. With all their hubris and bombast, their nuclear arsenals and showcase megacities, the two superpowers, Russia and America, would rather not have you peek into their backyard. This exhibit, to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the ART BASEL, offers a rare opportunity. - Stefan Sullivan
