City/Town: Wollishofen, Zurich
Event Type: Other
Meeting Point: Shamrock Irish Pub

There's a regular weekly Sunday night pub quiz being held at the Shamrock Irish pub in Wollishofen in Zurich that has become legendary.

www.shamrock-irishpub.ch
http://map.search.ch/zuerich/studackerstr.1
044 482 10 62

It's got very popular now.
It's lively, free to enter and a good laugh.
As it's got more and more popular you need to get there fairly early to get a table. I would recommend aiming by 6:30pm (or outside later during the summer) to be on the safe side.
But if the tables are all taken you can ask if people can squeeze up, or you can sit / stand at the bar or ask Bart if he can find you some where to sit. During the summer, some people have even participated whilst sitting on the tables on the sun terrace!

The smoking ban comes into force on 1st May, so we can see if Bart has returned the two extractor units fitted so the air wasn't too smokey.

There are more & more teams each week. If you come alone or in a couple, quizmaster Jim or Bart the everso friendly owner can pair you up with another team. You can even ask complete strangers if you can join them, it really is that friendly. Many members from this Forum attend regularly so you may even make new acquaintences.

The winners get 50CHF. Second win 25CHF (or a round of drinks - not bad considering it costs nothing).

Anyhow it's free and something fun and interesting to do on a Sunday night (8:00pm till 10:30pm so not that late for Monday morning). Laughs aplenty.

They (friendly Irish owner Bart and his team) also serve nice food from the Irish/British menu until late. You can also dine or drink outside on the sun terrace.

Different teams seem to win each week but it's more for the fun than the 'sport'.
RSVP sign-ups for this event are now closed.

Hi everyone,

I love a good pub quiz, so count me in! Only been here a few weeks though, so I don't have a team - anyone want me?! Got to be honest, I'm not great on the general knowledge, but I'll try me best!

Be there early enough. Last Sunday, I did not see anyone of those I tended to sit together but there was a (I think) Malaysian women who before often was together with some others from that area but now was together with a Scot/Englishmen, a Swiss who knew that Scot, and a woman from north of London. We made it to place 2 in the end, which is not too bad ! And we had a lot of pleasure. And the nicest thing was Sir Reginald, that nice dog around, who of course would have known all the answers and was exactly the "person" needed ....

well, by that criteria, I should try to become a teetollar, but I do not take such things so seriously. We possibly were not too discreet, but what. I was, by military order, "condemned" to secrecy in October 91, and am happy no longer to be under such pressure.

But the beer I will accept !

Hi Becky,
As no-one else has offered yet, in answer to your query you can join me and my team (boys n girls) if you like.
Quiz starts at 8pm but need to get there at 7:30 to get a table. Also food's not too bad if you want to eat during or before the quiz.

PM if you can make it.

Cheers,
HB

Re: The Shamrock Sunday Evening Pub Quiz

The Shamrock Pub has a shiny new website.
Same old address with a major facelift :

www.shamrock-irishpub.ch

For regulars (and others) it looks like there will be a first anniversary party coming up.
Opening date was 8th November 2008, so I will update when I find out more.

Cheers,
HB

Re: The Shamrock Sunday Evening Pub Quiz

I wouldn't mind coming to this tonight as I am thankfully off work tommorrow... i'll see if I can find a couple of people to join me as I don't want to be gate-crashing any established teams.

EDIT - Ok i've got one person to come along, anyone else who maybe hasn't bene before fancy starting a new team?

One for a team

I think I'll come today, Rich, and if your gang's not full yet I'll be happy to join your team, though I'm not really new -- been there a couple of times, with a friend or joining a random team, nice atmosphere, beer, and finding out how ignorant I really am, so I want to start coming more often . Drop me a line.
Cheers,
-- Tom

Ok fine you can join, but only if you have an in-dept knowledge of the irrigation systems of the Byzantine era, as that's the only area of expertise we are seriously lacking in at the moment...

...along with music, films, history, geography, and general knowledge. I'll shoot you a PM.

Re: One for a team

I think that 4th place for a new team, a team with an average age of 26, untried and untested as a unit on the field of battle, was not too bad. As I said last night, it can only get better. If we'd have listened more to Ian and less to Becky we'd probably have come 2nd.

nah you couldn't have knocked us off our 2nd place perch I am glad i had three brainy team mates, think i was responsible for 2 points of the 41 we got

Anyone fancy joining me in a halfwits team next time? it was all a bit competitive for my poor brain cells

Assuming the next one is next Sunday, and if I'm back on time, you can have a real thicky on your team if you want

Hmm I dont know... the amount of questions we got wrong through listening to the wrong person (which was of course never me, ahem) was certainly not far off what was required for 2nd place.

I predict a significant improvement next time.
