City/Town: Wollishofen, Zurich
Event Type: Other
Meeting Point: Shamrock Irish Pub

There's a regular weekly Sunday night pub quiz being held at the Shamrock Irish pub in Wollishofen in Zurich that has become legendary.

www.shamrock-irishpub.ch
http://map.search.ch/zuerich/studackerstr.1
044 482 10 62

It's got very popular now.
It's lively, free to enter and a good laugh.
As it's got more and more popular you need to get there fairly early to get a table. I would recommend aiming by 6:30pm (or outside later during the summer) to be on the safe side.
But if the tables are all taken you can ask if people can squeeze up, or you can sit / stand at the bar or ask Bart if he can find you some where to sit. During the summer, some people have even participated whilst sitting on the tables on the sun terrace!

The smoking ban comes into force on 1st May, so we can see if Bart has returned the two extractor units fitted so the air wasn't too smokey.

There are more & more teams each week. If you come alone or in a couple, quizmaster Jim or Bart the everso friendly owner can pair you up with another team. You can even ask complete strangers if you can join them, it really is that friendly. Many members from this Forum attend regularly so you may even make new acquaintences.

The winners get 50CHF. Second win 25CHF (or a round of drinks - not bad considering it costs nothing).

Anyhow it's free and something fun and interesting to do on a Sunday night (8:00pm till 10:30pm so not that late for Monday morning). Laughs aplenty.

They (friendly Irish owner Bart and his team) also serve nice food from the Irish/British menu until late. You can also dine or drink outside on the sun terrace.

Different teams seem to win each week but it's more for the fun than the 'sport'.
RSVP sign-ups for this event are now closed.

It involves a conversation about Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp... but both at the err... same time. Don't ask.
Didn't she have the sudden realisation that her last tram was going, combined with the ridiculous taxi costs here?

Students these days just don't have the dedication to drinking that we had back in my day, when it was all fields around here and men were men etc...

Re: The Shamrock Sunday Evening Pub Quiz

Oh man, I used to do weekly pub-quizzes a lot (say, weekly?) back in Norway, and I would love to go here more or less frequently, but it's more fun with a fixed team - which I don't have. Or don't they do seasonal standings?

I think that 4th place for a new team, a team with an average age of 26, untried and untested as a unit on the field of battle, was not too bad.
Not too bad at all, and fun anyway. Hope to come next week again.

You may be over-optimistic here...

If we'd have listened more to Ian and less to Becky we'd probably have come 2nd.
But listen to her just a a bit less and we'd have been 5th. And intuition for string instruments is important.

Gladly, on the only question I voiced a wrong answer for, the majority vote was against my answer and you were sensible enough not to listen

Gotta say some people's (ehmm...) poor intuition for basic geometry struck me as appalling...

Well lets just say that without Tom's knowledge on irrigation systems during the Byzantine area, we would have been royally screwed...
Man, now to live up to the expectations you set when the tough ones come I'll have to get and read this book...

Yup. Well, no night-buses on Sundays... But trams start quite early here. So if you're off drinking for a long night away from home, just have to stay long enough for your way home...

Re: The Shamrock Sunday Evening Pub Quiz

The Shamrock quiz seems to be getting busier and busier.
15 teams last night.
Got very cosy in some nooks and crannies.

Bart has recently installed two extractor fans so we don't get too smokey while we wait for the smoking ban.

A few new faces also.

Has anyone been reluctant to come on their own?
One new person came up and joined our team last night and we had a great time chatting in between rounds (of questions and drinks).

So don' t be afraid if you want to roll up on your own.

Cheers,
Higgy Baby

Just out of interest what's the max allowed number of people for a team, around 6? Ours has ballooned and I think we're going to have to split it up into 2 or so.

shhhhhhhhhhhh they haven't noticed yet.

Started off as 4 now officially 5 (I believe).

I heard points were deducted for large teams but someone else told me they weren't as big teams can't make so many good decisions on the correct/best answer. That's the logic I was told.

If you got your papers back after the round you could check but then we wouldn't leave the pub till the wee small hours.
Hold on Rich, that's never been a problem for your team
But with the taxi cost maybe Bart should lay on a shuttle bus to Zurich HB.

More logic for allowing bigger teams was it was quicker to mark the teams' answers.

No limit to the size of teams, apparently.

Something to do with the fact that teams of more than four rarely win
because the team is too busy arguing with each other, changing correct
answers to wrong ones, and subsequently remonstrating with each other
as to who changed what, why didn't you listen, etc. etc....

really? good to know - i was told max.5
well we've seen 1 person on their own win (alas not me...)
and then super-duo team who have had a winning streak recently, seems you may be onto something about larger teams..

(though it's more fun to heckle in a big team )

Hmm interesting, thanks for the feedback guys. I think 10+ is wayyyy too big for a group though, it just results in chaos and indecisiveness, and we have more than enough of that as it is.

One to five people in a team.

A regular legend has won it on his own a couple of times. So you can play 'Han Solo' if you like :-)
Another regular team have three members.
Most have four or five but it doesn't matter so long as it's not too many.

If you come along alone you can be introduced to a other people by the staff (or you could ask yourself if you like the look of someone /team).
