Re: (Unofficial) Thursday Night Drinks at the Viadukt Market

So . . .is there a way to find the thursday night group at the Viadukt? . .where are you all - if you are new like me and don`t know anyone?
Ask anyone you may say . . . not so easy when it`s packed like it was tonight and having asked quite a lot of people `Are you with the EF?` getting either `Nein` or `er . . well sometimes` (which means `Yes` but not tonight).

Re: (Unofficial) Thursday Night Drinks at the Viadukt Market

This is a very vague question. Do you mean you were standing by GG's Cheese stall and couldn't work out which of the English speaking mob were EF and which we were not? Or do you mean you didn't find the right place at the Viadukt?

Re: (Unofficial) Thursday Night Drinks at the Viadukt Market

I did go to the English cheese stall (cheese and pies plus other stuff) . .there were no other people standing around there so I went to the big bar area at the end. Loads of people around the bar and the tables.
So . . . .yes I was actually unable to identify any EF people actually . . .not knowing any. As I did say before . . I asked quite a few people . . but ended up looking like a loser I guess.
I just wanted to meet some new people that`s all - no worries.

Re: (Unofficial) Thursday Night Drinks at the Viadukt Market

He's got a point: when we used to hang around the cheese stall at the main station, it was pretty clear who we were. Anybody could walk up to the people speaking English, clutching their plastic glass of beer and they were in.

The Viadukt, being a proper bar, actually has proper people there, who are not particularly easily distinguishable from the EF crowd, except for the fact that the EF crowd may be recognised for their devoted admiration towards the barmaid. But if you're not a student of human non-verbal communication, that might not be so easy to see.

I wonder if Mr Grapefruit ought to send the Gromit puppet over to the bar as something of a visual identifier?

It must be tough for a newcomer to the group.

Re: (Unofficial) Thursday Night Drinks at the Viadukt Market

I agree. There is a limit to the number of 'No, what are you talking about?' answers that one can take as a newcomer. Perhaps we could suggest that anyone going for the first time should wear a red scarf, then the Onus would be on the old hands to keep asking 'are you an EFer here for the first time?' every time they see someone wearing one. They would soon get used to hearing: 'Bisch halb b'soffe. Nimm diini auge weg von mim Schal'

Are you half drunk? Take your eyes off my scarf.

To be fair . . it does say `Unofficial` drinks night. Not a problem . . I`ll find `em next time . . a bit more heavy interrogation techniques required

Re: (Unofficial) Thursday Night Drinks at the Viadukt Market

You could do what some chap did once when we were on holiday in a quaint little town in Normandy. He stood in the middle of the market place, cupped his hands to his mouth and cried:

Does anyone in this bloody town speak English?

It worked for him...

Re: (Unofficial) Thursday Night Drinks at the Viadukt Market

An army wife who moved from country to country all the time got into the habit of going into the local shops and putting a similar question loud enough for everyone to hear (albeit phrasing it more delicately). Usually at least one person would speak up and help her with her purchases. Then one day she walked into yet another small shop where eveyone was chatting, said her usual piece and was surprised to be greeted by an extremely stony silence. One elderly matron in the group drew herself up to her full height and said acidly. 'Young lady, I hope we ALL speak English. After all, we are in England¨

Re: (Unofficial) Thursday Night Drinks at the Viadukt Market

Hi Basher. Simple answer is to come to my cheese stall and say hello. Most of the EF crowd come to me first to ask who else has arrived - we usually have some cheese nibbles ready for you all anyway. I always take any newbies along to the bar to introduce them. Tonight however I wasn't around but just ask anyone who is manning my stall (cheese, not pies) and they will point you in the right direction.

You could of course just make your way to the "Naughty Boys Corner" (corner of the horseshoe shaped bar nearest the kitchen) and try to get the attention of the sad middle aged blokes who are dribbling into their Dunkle Bier and Rioja. If it's before 8.30 they will be saving an empty stool for me, feel free to take it and dribble to your hearts content until I am done with work.

Basher, the Markt Halle stalls close at 20:00 and folks move to the bar. As Grumps said, they're generally at the corner of the bar nearest the kitchen. Sorry you were unable to find us last night; there was quite a crowd and lots of lovely cookies, courtesy of JLF Thanks for those!

Always a pleasure to meet new faces, too. Hope to see all y'all again soon.

Alternatively you could do what we eventually did. Ask the friendly bar staff!
