Skiing Mer de Glace in Chamonix?

Hello, Has anyone skied the Mer de Glace in Chamonix? If so, can you recommend a great tour guide and share your experience?

Thanks!

Hi,

Both the Pas de Chevre & Valley Blanche end up on the Mer de Glace. If your paying anybody you need a fully qualified UIAGM mountain guide as it's on Glaciated terrain, tour guides & ski instructers can't go there. I have been many times, usually without guides but with friends who do some 'ski mountineering' it's more exciting...."Le risque de zero n'existe pas!"

I would wait for some more snow, you cant ski into Chamonix now & getting to the train is getting a little tricky! The exit from the Pas de Chevre will need crampons & possibly ropes!

There are many groups doing the 'Valley Blanche' every day, they can be booked through the bureau de guides. If you a good skier you probably will want to find some better skiers so a more difficult descent can be made."

A guide will also set you up with a harness (regular type harness used for climbing, mountaineering, Via Ferrata etc.).

The harness is useful/needed if they have to fish you out of a crevasse.

If you are skiing with a non-guided group, make sure you have a harness.

Depending on conditions and preference, some people take along some crampons.

My suggestion is to wait until later in the season when the conditions (sun) will be much better. It is a great run and well worth it.
