Marathon des Sables

Hi everyone

I am looking for ideas on how to fundraise £5,000. I have just got a place running for a UK charity called Mencap in the Marathon des Sables, dubbed the toughest footrace on earth, and to get the place I had to commit to raising £9,500. I have now got £5,000 left to raise. Anyone wanting to donate can visit my fundraising page at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/PaulJanes where every pound counts. But also I would appreciate your ideas on what I could do to get the remainder of the money.

Thanks

Did you ask your employer? Some companies do give to charities supported by employees. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Re: Marathon des Sables

yes I did that thanks. They said they will put something in the pot but I don't know exactly howmuch yet. Most of the donations so far have come from individuals at work.

Re: Marathon des Sables

God dammmit . . . just having an entry for that race is like gold.
I tried a couple of time to enter it, a few years ago. They told me both times that the WAITING list for 3 years in advance was now full.
I guess I just lost interest in it an took an entry in the UK `tough guy race` instead.
Bloody good luck to you anyway and I`ll check out your web site.
Cheers,
Basher

That race is crazy. Here's a race report from a couple of years ago from another guy living in Zurich.

Chris Moon did it too - in spite of having lost an arm and lower leg when clearing land-mines in Cambodia. Some folk just don't know the meaning of enough is enough.

Re: Marathon des Sables

Thanks guys. Well it is indeed hard to get a place in the UK as it seems Britain is full of people wanting to endure 6 days of suffering, and each country has a certain allocation of places. The normal non charity places in the UK are already fully booked up for 2011 and 2012 and so the only way in is via a charity. I didn't get any reply from the Swiss representation for the race, and then I was offered the charity place for Mencap in the UK so I kindly accepted. My friend managed to enter this years race though for Switzerland not that long ago. So maybe they still have places for 2012. I really wanted to be part of a team though and to raise money for charity in the process.

If any of you guys would be kind enough to donate that would be great. Even a small amount will help due to the sheer number of english forum members. The guys at work are giving me an average of 50GBP each but I cant count on knowing 100 more people who will be willing to give that.

By the way if you are interested to see the training I am doing I have a blog at www.fat-to-fit-diaries.blogspot.com although it is still over a year away so my current target is the Zuri marathon. Nearer the time though it will be more MDS training specific. As the name suggests when I started the blog in December I was a bit fat, but now the weight is coming down slowly. I am no stranger to pain though as I have done La Marmotte cyclosportive twice, and cycled from JOG to LE, but no endurance running events yet, not even a full marathon.

By the way, just as a little encouragement to donate please see my post in the food and drink section entitled "Who wants a bottle of Vega Sicilia Unico Gran Reserva 1991 Ribera del Duero"

He's done the Badwater Ultramarathon too. His book is a real inspiration...

Jeff writes great race reports. His UTMB one has motivated me enough to try it in about 3 years, provided all goes well in the mean time !

Interesting blog, i will have a further read of it later, cheers!!!

Can i ask, which sports doctor did you see, and do you recommend him? Also, for your diagnosis, did that cost a lot of money overall and is that claimable against your health insurance?
