Pretty much the only bike you need in CH.
fair call, and it served me well in the portes du soleil last Summer! but still its a bit fragile when you really want to go hard on the DH trails.

hi guys,
would be keen on doing some events during the Summer. Does anyone on here do any racing?
andy
There are some great events in the area. Check out
http://www.juralp-cup.ch/ With the Zeta bike cup on the 1st May. There is also a fun series of Wed night rides near Neuchatel in June.

Re: Mountain Biking - Nyon/Geneva Area

Hi - another Andy here, from Nyon.

Just a quick note that if you don't fancy the steep climb up to St Cergue, there is a regular train that leaves Nyon that goes up to St Cergue & beyond (via a few villages en route) that you can put your bike on, for a fee of course.

I don't have the fitness myself to cycle up, not that I've tried, but there are a few nice routes up to St Cergue, La Barillette and La Dole. Which I've driven rather than cycle . I'll probably take my bike up on the train soon and check out the XC routes.

For lift served terrain, Verbier was pretty good last summer, although I didn't go on the proper downhill tracks that looked a bit beyond my expertise, equipment, and, most importantly, courage levels!

You should try -riding up- the path that crosses the main road is only fierce in a couple of spots.
Although all the downhill routes towards Nyon are clear of snow there's still a fair bit on the la Dole side, particularly on the trails, but I guess it'll just take another couple of weeks for it to all clear. It's really nice up here at this time of the year; no pooing cows everywhere and no fences. Although beware sometimes the barbed wire is just lying on the ground between the fence posts.

Where does the path start roughly? I didn't know there was one, only the hairpin road up.

Re: Mountain Biking - Nyon/Geneva Area

sorry for the delay, been skiing again!

There are lots of paths but the one mentioned above starts properly at the large layby at the bottom of the hill.

and I suggest the road upto la Barilette is nicer as a before work ride, tougher but less traffic. The St Cergue hill is a nightmare in the morning with folk overtaking on blind corners all the time from 6-8am. not nice even if you're on the otherside of the rd to most of the traffic.

Am posting an evening road ride on the events calender for thursday 14th April.

Re: Mountain Biking - Nyon/Geneva Area

Hi Guys,

Just moved to Rolle. A DH'er with trail riding intentions. Happy to do 20k+ rides to build fitness.

Spent the weekend doing some local rides - e.g. http://www.guidevtt.com/Membres/publ...p?randoID=1845

I'm pretty disillusioned as to what is highlighted as a MTB ride on guideVTT. Sealed roads, Fireroads, and little or no single track.

It would be great to ride from Rolle, but I'm willing to travel (train/car) to find some decent single track, not looking for nirvana here, just single track with some bends to it.

St Cergue sounds good. Does anzone know if this is a good ride -
http://www.guidevtt.com/DetailsParco...?ParcoursID=30

Or is there a place in St Cergue where I can get a trail map?

Any help is very much appreciated.

Thanks,

JT

Re: Mountain Biking - Nyon/Geneva Area

I expect you've already discovered by now that the trail you've identified is tarmac or wide forest trail, fun on a cyclocross bike or town hybrid but not really a mtb trail. this goes for pretty much all vtt waymarked routes.
There are also no proper mtb trail maps for the area either. Although this could change within a year or so as the national singletrail maps which originated in the east of the country are increasingly covering more areas.

St Cergue does have so ok mtb terrain but you kind of need to just get up here and ride around to find it. get off the St cergue train at the stop before st cergue and you'll find one of the numerous downhill routes back down to la Cote.

Nearest nice-ish route I've biked to you is the sentier du Toblerone and alot of the sentiers are bikeable but you need to be alert to walkers obviously.
Just over the border and you'll find more info and downhill orientated routes - MetÓbief and Les Crozet (both in the jura) aswell as obviously SalŔve.

Re: Mountain Biking - Nyon/Geneva Area

Yeah, for year round DH (and enduro/XC if you want it) Saleve is where it's at.

Also close'ish to Rolle is Rochers des nayes which has good enduro downhill.

Any of those swiss marked MTB trails are as Kate says just fireroads!.. But dont fret, there is absolutely tonnes of epic singletrail, and DH tracks around. it takes time and patience to find it.. or just get in with a group of locals who know their shit.

Feel free to give me a PM, you can come join us sometime.

Re: Mountain Biking - Nyon/Geneva Area

Hi JT,
I have been living in Nyon 6 months. I arrived keen as to ride the local roads and trails - then managed to break my road bike, get another one stolen, and not have anything but a full downhill bike all Summer.
However I have a commencal meta am on order, and it will arrive December. Then I will be riding the local trails as much as possible - even through winter
If you are looking for people to ride with right away. Dr Bike & Mr Ride shop in Gland. Great guys, and they do an all mountain ride every Saturday leaving from the shop around 2pm. I think they just pedal up toward to st-cergue direction and bomb back down.
Anyway I did ride DH all Summer and can give advice on just about every bike park within 2 hours drive - and trust me you are living in an awesome place. Just bad timing to arrive. Pretty much everywhere is closed now till May next year. You can always ride Saleve on the Gurtenbahn in Bern though.
Enjoy!

Re: Mountain Biking - Nyon/Geneva Area

Oh, and to everyone else on this forum that gave me great advise before I arrived. I finally have a road bike again! Got my warranty replacement a few weeks ago, and been out riding as much as possible.

so if any road rides are going before winter finally closes in let me know...

Re: Mountain Biking - Nyon/Geneva Area

Thanks for all the advice guys much appreciated. Was off the bike for a bit due to surgery, so hopefully the weather will continue for a while longer so i can get some enduro in.

I'm going to check out the St Cergue trails soon as they are local and I'm trying to keep away from the DH bike for a bit of balance in my life

Take care,

JT
