CRC (Chainreactioncycles.com) hacked?

Hi,

as the site is recommended here sometimes, I thought I forward this:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/03...ore_purchases/

Quote:

A suspected security breach at popular UK-based biking site chainreactioncycles.com has been linked by victims to multiple instances of fraud. Various bike enthusiast forums are alive with complaints (here and here) from customers of the site, several of whom are reporting unauthorised charges on their credit or debit cards. The victims are tied together by having shopped at the bike site over the last fortnight or so.

Yes, it happened and if you've bought from there in the past 2 years (or lifetime of your credit card) then you would be wise to check your statement. Most people report £15 phone top up charges being billed.

My credit card was blocked due to fraudulant activity a couple of weeks ago. Despite various downsides, Paypal is probably the best payment option for online commerce since the details of your card are never passed to the merchant.

With the strength of the CHF, Swiss retailers like bike city or bike import are actually competitively priced compared to CRC and they will send your parts out with a Rechnung so are safest of all!

Cheers

You mean a Swiss retailer is passing on the savings due to the strong CHF
First time I heard of that. I just recently purchased an item costing over 3,000 CHF for an item that was being imported from the U.S. We had to haggle them to reduce the price based on the USD-CHF rate. They gave us 13%, but we did have to ask for it.

Check 2011 XTR prices (not RRP obviously) Comparable prices to UK and US if you're paying MWSt

I agree with Jekyll. The local shops are very attractive right now. I've been getting stuff from my LBS sometimes for cheaper than CRC prices and the swiss online shops are offering brilliant value for money right now. Another advantage is you won't get stung for the handling charges on import either. For me I haven't made a purchase with CRC in about a year because it's just not worth it at the moment.

Re: CRC (Chainreactioncycles.com) hacked?

Another thing often missed with bike-import and bikecity is that they also have volume based discounts. eg (bikecity)

2% Rabatt ab Fr. 200.00 Warenwert
5% Rabatt ab Fr. 500.00 Warenwert
10% Rabatt ab Fr. 1000.00 Warenwert

You won't get that at CRC!

Re: CRC (Chainreactioncycles.com) hacked?

I got a call from my CC company notifying me of some dodgy transactions. Just bought some stuff from CRC. Thankfully my card company picked up the fraud and so it has cost me nothing except the hassle of getting a new card issued.
I probably won't use their services again. They do have a massive choice of gear and apart from the bad card fraud business I've always had good service from them. We were about to buy 2 new bikes from them but for exactly the comments above we went with LBS and got a comparable deal

Re: CRC (Chainreactioncycles.com) hacked?

I guess I'm lucky that I haven't made an order with CRC in the last couple of months, because despite being a frequent customer, nothing dodgy has come up on my credit card. According to the reports, CRC are doing all they can to trace the source of the problem, and I expect that in the future they will be at least as secure as any other site, possibly more so now given the attention caused by this security lapse.

BTW, in case you're interested to see just how massive the CRC operation has become, then take a look at this behind the scenes look posted recently at Bikeradar.

Local bike shops can hopefully get you a decent price on many parts, and the other advantage for those who are not so knowledgeable is that they can make sure that you're getting the right / compatible parts - I've heard of people buying stuff online before, then having to pay for it again when they realize that it was not what they needed, which negates any potential savings. BTW, I now work for a local bike shop, so am now extra-biased in my opinion (and have less time to post about cycling on EF ).
