Spring skiing ?

Hi all,

New to the forum and Switzerland and as said in my introduction, I was slightly ambitious and brought my snowboard with me rather than shipping in the container. With the nicer weather has all the snow finally melted or is there some skiing/snowboarding still to be had ?

I'm in Schaffhausen at the moment but happy to travel for a few hours to get my snow fix! Was looking at Engelberg and Flumserberg as potential resorts - does anyone have any recommendations or trips planned this coming weekend (ex-Zurich) that I could tag along ?

Cheers,
Matt

Well Flumserberg seems to get quite a bashing on this forum. Undeserved in my view. It depends what you are looking for in a resort. Flumserberg is close to Zurich, has easy access, it doesn't have the most demanding runs but it is beautiful and has some nice (and some awful) places to grab a coffee or lunch.

Right now it is pretty soft up there. Basically I would say you can't do much after lunch. But before then, the earlier the better, it is ok. Not brilliant - but ok.

Hope that helps
Jo

Check up the Hoch-Ybrig, quite popular among people in Zürich and Schaffhausen

Re: Spring skiing ?

Piste conditions were excellent in Davos at the weekend - BUT I doubt the resort runs will survive the week

Re: Spring skiing ?

Hello, also not to far away are FlimsLaax and Lenzerheide, both great ski resorts. If you don't mind some driving Saas Fee is also nice, however, might be really far for you if you are in Schaffhausen. Enjoy!

Re: Spring skiing ?

Unfortunately i'm going to have to use the trains so limited to resorts with stations. Think i'll leave it until the last minute and see if any snow has survived !

If that fails at least I've brought some shorts with me

Re: Spring skiing ?

I'm not sure how far you are from Verbier, but there is still lots of good skiing to be had here, and will be for another 2-3 weeks.

Re: Spring skiing ?

Verbiers a bit too far I think - I've always got next season to explore a little further afield

Decided on Films Laax this Saturday - if anyone else fancies it let me know !

Re: Spring skiing ?

Flumserberg and Ybrig are quite low for this time of the year, very warm and the snow is melting quickly. If you head to Graubunden you can go to higher altitude and find better snow. I was yesterday in Davos (Parsenn), all the slopes are above 2000 m and the snow was still pretty good. Laax/Flims is also quite high. Lenzerheide is maybe a bit lower.

This weekend should be sunny and very warm, therefore I'd go to Davos or Laax.

Re: Spring skiing ?

Engelberg stays open till pretty late in the season, the glacier is open all year round. Was there last week and there was still good snow to be had, not so sure now....

Titlis will close near the end of May for skiing. More than likely, only the glacier will have prepared pistes after Easter (the way the snow is looking now). The glacier will not be open for skiing until October (no summer skiing since 5-6 years ago).

Today the snow quality was pretty good (5-10 cm windblown powder up above 2500 m). Tomorrow will probably be good up high as well. Not so sure about this weekend though. It won't be very good after 12 due to the high temps. There is some sort of Big Air contest on the Jochpass though for some alternative entertainment.

I would avoid Flims/Laax this time of year due to the fact that it is all south facing.

Re: Spring skiing ?

I was in Flims-Laax two weeks ago and it was warm on arrival (10 deg in Laax) and snow was still good up high (especially on Glacier). We had more snow at end of week with fresh powder but last week was warm. Would expect it to be still okay high - check laax website for glacier temperatures.

Re: Spring skiing ?

Skied the Portes du Soleil last week from les Crozets to Avoriaz/Chatel - a very mixed week, with very wet and heavy Spring snow - diablolical at the end of the day. Fresh but very heavy 'powder' on Wednesday- which got soft and wet later in the day- very hard work. Went to Verbier yesterday, and headed right for the top at Col des Gentiannes- great, but very changing conditions from slope to slope depending on orientation- from very hard to wet and spongy. Still a great last day for the season. Made even better by watching a pair of Golden Eagles compete for the best soar with some parapenters. Ski season over for me, with a big smile- despite a very gammy knee I enjoyed every minute on the slopes even now I'm an OAP!
