Fly fishing around Zurich

Hello!

Spring is here, and fishing withdrawal is getting bad. I've done quite a lot of fly fishing in California, but it seems that fishing is generally much less popular here, and it's much harder to find information and other fishing enthusiasts.

From what I understand, there is no need for a license for Zürichsee, Greifensee, Pfäffikersee und Türlersee. Does anybody know a nice place on any of these lakes where one can fish in relative solitude?

What are the good places to go from Zurich for fly fishing? There must be some nice streams near the mountains. How does one find out where to buy the license for these places?

I'm not asking for any secret honey holes, but some general information would be really appreciated! Please help a fellow fisherman!

Thanks!

Hello 2x2,

I'll be arriving shortly in Zurich and I wanted to know if you got any leads on where to get the fishing permits/license, if any.

I also am an enthusiastic flyfisherman, so I hope you can help me out a little

i looked into it a little.. you have to sit an exam on fish biology, breeding etc etc, and thats applicable for each area you wish to fish.

Best info you wil get is at any local fishing shop - in ZH i have no idea where tho.

I fish in france instead - its like the UK, get a permit from the town hall and thats it.

Related to the discussion above, here is the helpful, but Geneva-centric link, from Anglo-info I came across whilst looking to find whether my children might throw a hook and worm in the water without risking jail time:

I gave up on fishing. I´m building a mini Hadron Collider in my garden instead. More chance of a successful outcome

Was too busy at work to get out , so can't help much with advice on places to go, unfortunately. I see people fishing from the shore on Zurichsee all the time, and even saw some fly fishermen (on a boat), but haven't seen anyone pulling out anything. Another license-free lake, Türlersee, is a bit too crowded on the weekends. There is lots of small fish there, but probably not too good for a fly -- it looks like roach or something similar.

For some places, you can get a one day license without doing the exam; for other places they want the exam for any license. It's not an easy hobby here. If you pass the exam, canton Schwyz might be a good place to try -- not too populated, and all the rivers are covered with the same license, unlike in Zurich.
Does anybody here know about flyfishing (places and rules) in more remote areas, like Graubunden? Any good hike-in places?

Re: Fly fishing around Zurich

Graubunden is a pretty good place to fish, you can get a cantonal patent which allows you to fish most everywhere, unlike most of the other cantons where sections of water are managed by individuals/groups, and you have to get a day/year license from them, assuming some are available. Rivers are off limits for three fixed days a week, I can't remember which ones offhand though.

Personally I'm a member of some local fishing clubs which give me access to sections of rivers in Zürich, and I fish high alpine lakes as well. Fly fishing the bigger lakes that have Freiangelrecht is an exercise in futility and frustration. (float tubing, on the other hand, works great on the bigger lakes, but finding out which lakes allow them and which don't is another matter.)
