Zurich. Where to rent a nice road bike for Easter ?

Hi, I would like to take the plunge and buy my first road bike since I was a kid for fitness and to see around the region. I looked in a shop and was overwhelmed with the choice these days and how far and expensive bikes have become since my Grifter from 1981 - loved that bike!

I'm willing to pay a fair bit if it is something I would enjoy and use often. As a precaution against buying the "wrong" bike (for me) I reckon I would rent a real nice sporty road bike for some days and that experience will shape my purchase decision. (Main doubt is I'm not sure if I would enjoy bending over for hours on a proper racer these days but want to try first).

Doesn't have to be in Zurich.

Don't know about renting a specialist bike, but you can rent regular road bikes from the SBB.

I'm old enough to remember Grifters too

Thought about renting but ended up buying a bike for peanuts (Fr. 240) from Jumbo and enjoyed cycling around Zürich last weekend

I had been using the free bike rental from Zürich HB (http://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/content/...standorte.html) but on sunny days you have to get up very early to get one. I suspect people "cheat" at weekends by taking one out the day before and keeping it overnight and paying the Fr.10 overnight charge

Re: Zurich. Where to rent a nice road bike for Easter ?

I'm afraid I can't help with renting, but consider a road bike which is designed more for sportives than for road racing. They tend to have a higher front end meaning more comfort, although of course if you are looking for that last second or two of aerodynamic gains you may lose out!

Given the chance, look abroad too once you have an idea of what you want. I have found the Swiss bike shops are incredibly expensive when compared to some options from eg the UK. Not all UK retailers will ship, but even taking into account shipping and import duties (less the UK VAT of course) it can still make a lot of sense. One good company is www.wiggle.co.uk

I have used the free ones and looked at the SBB a few days ago. They are absolutely perfect for a spin around town but I'm planning more distance. They also have light mountain bikes.

Wiggle ? Never heard of them. Checking out the site now. Thanks.

The two big UK-based on-line bike retailers are Wiggle and Chain Reaction Cycles. I have used them both extensively and never had any problems. They will both ship to Switzerland (although there may be a couple of brands which they can't eg Focus bikes from Wiggle are not shippable to CH due to Focus having other dealers in CH.

If you want to rent a road bike, my suggestion is Bike Switzerland:

http://www.bikeswitzerlandrentals.com/

I've done some work for them as a guide, and can confirm they are nice people
