Weekend Cycling Groups

Does anyone know if there is a regular i.e. weekly cycling group that meets up to do road cycling? Im not an especially serious rider so I probably wouldnt join a cycling team but more of a weekend rider looking for company. I just don't have time in the evenings due to work commitments and German lessons. Any help appreciated, thanks

Re: Weekend Cycling Groups

Have a look at the Zurich Cycling Club on meetup.com.

There's also the Radfahrer-Verein Zürich. The website is in German but shouldn't be too tough to navigate, especially as you are learning the language.

Re: Weekend Cycling Groups

Several cycling friends have recommended the Sunday morning Tempo Sport ride, so I'm still planning to check it out sometime myself: http://www.tempo-sport.ch/infos/events/radsport.html

If you can come by the cyclist social this Friday night then you might meet several other people looking for the same thing as you.....
Cyclist Social

Hope to see you there!

Hi everybody,

I'm also hoping to come to the social on Friday. Sounds like fun!

Hi Alan,

Your situation sounds very similar to mine. I ride a bit but I'm not so intense and just looking for some recreational riding and to get some exercise. I also have work and German lessons, as well as family, so weekends are the only option. I did do the Zurich Metzgete but believe me, I was one of the last to finish! Let me know if you want to ride sometime.

Dan

Re: Weekend Cycling Groups

I'm going to come home from work, hit the gym, and could be in town by 10pm. I hope that won't be too late! See you guys down there if you're still around.

Dan- if I don't see you at the social, I'll take you up on your offer. Cheers

Re: Weekend Cycling Groups

Hi Alan, we may miss each other. I'm going with the wife and kids so I probably won't be there until 10pm. Otherwise, we can plan a weekend ride. I live near Baden but we can meet almost anywhere. Sundays are usually pretty easy.

Re: Weekend Cycling Groups

Hey guys. Anyone interested in climbing Furka or Nufenen before the pass is open to cars? I noticed Gotthard is already open so I don't know how long it takes before the others around will follow....

I am definitely interested, if this is still the case on the weekend - I could go this Sunday (the 8th)...

Me too......(maybe). Please inform me when meeting time and place have been agreed upon. The 8th. or 15th. is fine for me.

I come by car from Bülach and have room for one person+bike extra.

Re: Weekend Cycling Groups

So....who will do the honour and organize such a trip?

I have no experience in doing mountain passes and I do not know where it would be at good place to depart/arrive if not the same place.

Please step forward anyone who knows these details.

Maybe it should be posted as an EF event when all details has been settled?

Thanks.

So can anyone give an indication of what level of fitness this requires? Sounds great but I don't know if I'm in shape for it? How far is it and how long do you expect?

Re: Weekend Cycling Groups

This thread reminds me of a line in a song "Everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die"

However, I would like to ride as far as possible towards Furka from Meiringen on Sunday so if the weather permits, I will give it a go.

Here is the route.

...or here as well.

I have no idea how far it is possible to get due to the weather. The forecast for Sunday says chances of rain but I will know more later this week.

I plan to be in Meiringen around 10 o'clock - anyone like to join me?

IF this sounds like a stupid idea, please let me know what to do different - ok?

Re: Weekend Cycling Groups

Hi all,

If the weather is good, I'll be there Sunday. I've not done the Furka from that side, so looking forward! For those who are new to pass-bagging, veloland.ch is a good place to get route info and height profiles.

Looks like the Meiringen to Andermatt stretch is about 70 km, with 1566 m up to the Grimsel, a quick ride down to Gletch, and then another 672 m up to Furka. From the Furka, it's about 1000 m down to Andermatt, where people can either take the train or keep on rolling down to Luzern (long, but mostly a coast).

I'm not sure I'm sufficiently crazy at this point in the year, but if the weather is good, I'll consider doing this loop: Meiringen -> Grimselpass -> Furkapass -> Andermatt -> Wassen -> Sustenpass -> Meiringen. Total km would be about 120, hm about 3600. Like I said, I have sincere doubts about whether my current fitness level is up to such a plan...but it sure sounds cool!

To point out the obvious, it will be COLD on the passes and coming down from the passes. Plan on bringing lots of clothes and lots of food.

Erin

Thanks for the info.

I was planning on (just) going up to Grimsel or/and Furka and the go down the same way again, as this would probably fit my current fitness level better.

Please keep me posted on your planning as we at least could start at the same time

Re: Weekend Cycling Groups

I like the idea a lot, but I don't know how these passes look like at the moment. From various websites, I gathered that Grimselpass will not be open till the end of the month and Susten/Furka/Nufenen within a couple of weeks max.
That means that if we go this weekend we might have to push the bikes through some snow on some unknown distance. It makes the 3-pass loop a bit more of an adventure

This said, you can count me in.

Re: Weekend Cycling Groups

I'm a big on these passes as well, but i'm thinking this weekend (and possibly the next) are still a bit early. By look of the rain/snow radar, they are getting a bit of dump right now. Going whilst they are closed is a roll of the dice.

From 21st May I'll be in on these rides.
