Flat isolated place to practice biking in safety [ZH]

I have been out of practice for more than 10 years and although they say you never forget how you rode a bike, I am terrified going out in the streets. So, I want to take the bike to a sort of park or a nice off-road where I can bike and practice without being in the streets or with cars.

Any suggestions where to go in Zurich or short distance from it?

thanks

I think I'd go for a large parking place belonging to a firm or shopping centre. Zürich city will be difficult but on a Sunday these places are usually empty and there is practically nothing you can run into. Otherwise maybe a school playground.

Good luck with the practice.

I live in Greifensee, and there is a wonderful trail that goes all around the lake. Some of it is paved and some of it is gravel/dirt, but it's a beautiful, peaceful ride and takes maybe about 2 hours to get completely around. And it's ALL flat!

yes, take the train to Schwerzenbach.

Another alternative is the cycle trail around the airport, or some parts by the lake.

Enjoy...

I second Greifensee but as it is a popular place it is full of bikers and rollerbladers or runners/walkers..and they come in a variety from enthusiasts to amateurs..so you do need to know something about riding etc before you get on that path..make sure to wear your helmet!

Or go along the Limmat, which is car free (or very quiet roads) from Altstetten as far as the outskirts of Baden.

It gets a bit up and down between Dietikon and Wurenlos but the part from Altstetten to Dietikon is easy cycling.

If you don't mind a 40 - 60 minute train ride, hop on the S2 at platforms 51-54 at the mainstation, and get off at any station between Pfaeffikon SZ and Ziegelbruecke. There are miles upon miles of dead flat, dead straight and largely quiet cycle paths and regular - but hardly used by any non-agricultural vehicles - lanes all across the Linth plain (Linthebene).

I've not been anywhere near a bike since I was ten years old, but this area is so flat and yet so beautiful that even I'm tempted to take it up again.

You'll have to check what the rules are for carrying a bike on a train, but there are some threads about this already, and you certainly won't regret making the journey out of town.

For that kind of place, I don't mind even an hour and a bit on the train...(besides, I like train rides).

Thank you all for the tips. All going well, I'm dragging one of my friends this Thursday to give it a go and may be, juuuust may be, it will be the start of something new - the bike and I.
