| | Friendly rowing club (Zurich)
Hi
Just moved to Zurich, and would like to carry on rowing. Nothing too competitive, but don't mind the odd early morning and and regatta! My german isn't too great though (but I will be working on that....), so looking for somewere that is pretty friendly
Cheers
Helen
p.s. I'm a long term bowsider, but happy to change if needed to fit into a crew....I'm also pretty tall....

hi Helen, did you ever find any rowing partners? I rowed in college and still own an indoor rower. Let me know if you found a club.

Hi, don't know if this is of any help but all the way around lake zurich are a fair number of rowing clubs.
Look under the main rowing federation website and follow the link for CH- Club-Index. This lists all clubs so you should be able to find one near you. http://www.swissrowing.ch/
I recently joined a club in Staeffa, I find that they do sculling more than "rowing" here and they ran a very good course for beginners to sculling (I am more used to traditional eights rowing)- all in German but basically you get in a boat and try not to fall out or knock someone out right (!) so it doesn't matter what language they speak if you ask me.
Have fun rowing, 8am, flat mirror lake, alps are out, rowing along, it doesn't get better....

Hi,
I am currently rowing at the Seeclub Zurich. It is a fairly well organised club (three levels -competitive, former competitive, and super amamteurs), but haven't seen many female rowers. Belvoir Club seems to cater mostly for women, and I know there is a women's 8 at Kaufleuten (not as competitive as Belvoir though).
Most of rowing here is sculling, with actual long blade rowing left mostly for teams.
Hope this helps

Y'all are mind readers and I am so glad for the link. I just woke up today with the thought "I should really like to begin rowing" and viola!
Thanks again!

All the rowing clubs have German-speaking Websites only. Did anyone discover a club near central Zurich where they speak English? Thanks. | Quote: | | | | | Hi, don't know if this is of any help but all the way around lake zurich are a fair number of rowing clubs.

I wasn't clear from their website.

I just checked the website and even though I don't speak scandinavian its close enough to German to work out that you have to speak Skandinavian to join this particular group!
If you tell me where you live (ie Horgen side of lake, Meilen side of lake or Zurich centre) then I can see which club would be nearest. All sites are in German but I shall get the contact names for you if I can know which would be your best local one.
From my own experience joining a local swiss one is good, if you make the effort to speak, even in stumbling German you will be welcomed and then slowly but surely you'll get some good local swiss friends.
Most clubs have regatta's and my local one even has trips to Itlay and so on, so have a go as 'm sure you'll enjoy it!

Hi there,
Thanks for the tip. I live in Erlenbach so prefer the Meilen side of the lake. Apparently there is a rowing club in Erlenbach itself which would be ideal...
Regards,
Andrew

OK this is their website and I have to admit I almost joined them but then joined the one in Saefa instead (just closer to home for me).
They row on a Wed's evening at 18.30pm (times ususally change during winter).
If you go Under "Kontakt" then "Mailformular" just send them a message that you'd like to join.
If you don't speak German just write in English, I'm sure they'll have someone who can contact you.
Just a heads up, most clubs have a yearly fee and a joining fee. The joining fee can be quite steep 300-500 CHF's. But if this is your main hobby this is cheaper than a gym subscription.
If you have problems let me know, as Saefa might be an option if Erlenbach proves difficult. http://www.rudercluberlenbach.ch/ |

I'll be living on the Horgen side of lake, most likely in Wadenswil.
Your help is much appreciated!

You have a good choice on your side of the Lake, 3 clubs Horgen, Waedenswil and a bit further in Thawil. http://www.seeclubwaedi.ch/index.php?id=60 this is the link for the contact at waedenswil, they row on a Thursday evening and a sunday morning (for the general "Breitensport" group).
Thalwil rows on a Thursday evening and saturday morning , again "Breitensport" http://www.rcthawil.ch rct@rcthawil.ch
and finally Horgen is at and homepage is http://www.seeclub-horgen.ch/
All clubs will have a "breitensport" section "general public" section as well as the serious "Leistungsport" or "professional" ie competitive section. So irrespective of your level from beginner to professional competitor the clubs should be able to cater for you. Most clubs also do "induction" courses. These are great if you are new to rowing. Firstly you learn all the stuff in German, plus you join with a group of people of all the same level so you can already make some new contacts within the club rather than just turning up as the sole new person in^the village.
Good luck, maybe we should start an EF rowing team soon!

Hi guys,
I'm moving to Zurich on the end of next month. I'm rowing bow side for a long time. Do you know if anyonce is rowing on the lake in winter time or is it frozen? I've never been there so don't know how cold is it over there. Also do you know which you can recommend to join?
Not sure yet how long I'll be there but at least 3 months for sure.
Thanks
Ales

Most clubs row all year, the only change is that starting times get pushed back so summer s usually a 7am start (yes I know tough if you're not a morning person). In winter (Novemberish onwards) most row from 8am onwards. Thats my experience anyway, others from other clubs might be able to chip in with their local club times.
Enjoy the rowing,

Ales | | | | | Did you find a rowing partner. I am trying to get a more serious group together out of Kusnacht - if you are still here then mail me back.

I'm a student in ETH and I was a rower during my college years (Left on 2-, 4-, 8-). I'm also interested in a semi-serious crew.
