Limmat schwimmen

Tomorrow will be the 2011 Limmat Schwimm, but I'm confused about whether or not floats are allowed. All of the pictures I've seen show people with inflatable ducks or on lilo's etc, but if I'm not mistake the rules say this isn't allowed

Hilfsmittel wie Flosse, Gummiboote oder Schwimmflügel sind verboten

Am I misreading this ?

Re: Limmat schimmen

I believe you are issued a flotation device if you wish to have one. My impression is that it is also a competitive swim, and in that case, as per your german details, flippers and fins are not allowed....

Flosse translates as 'fins' - 'gummiboote' I think are rubber shoes, and swimming 'wings' may be the sort of thing that are normally put on children ?

I'm guessing there's also a limitation to ensure that people who truly are not really swimmers, don't rely on a flotation device. As someone who learnt to swim in salt water, in up to 2 metre surf, I find swimming in the lake/river very different (you don't float as well in freshwater)...

Have fun - we might come down to the river to see you float by....

From previous years, it certainly looks like people take inflatable toys with them...

Re: Limmat schwimmen

OK my german bad, really bad ... even spelt the thread title wrong

The competitive bit starts first, but the fun swim is afterward. Maybe I will go and see tomorrow. Secretly I just wanted a rubber duck.

Re: Limmat schimmen

I wouldn't fancy doing a competitive swim with all those yellow ducks around. Maybe they let the 'real swimmers' start first.

Fins are perhaps forbidden to stop folk whacking each other with them while swimming, Gummiboote are 'inflatable boats' and 'Flügeli' are indeed the 'wings' which small children sometimes use. The latter are maybe forbidden to stop non-swimmers taking part!

Supposed to be great fun but there are not many 'tickets' left.

Links to the 2009 Thread.

Re: Limmat schimmen

I know the tickets are almost gone, I need to pick one up in the morning though as I dont have a printer at home.

I had assumed I could register online without needing to print anything...organised as ever..

Re: Limmat schimmen

you can register online and pay for the ticket... print it... and tomorrow get your number and your start hour for the swimm

the competitive swimmers go first .. and i think half an hour later are the rest of us (normal dudes with flotation devices) for just the fun of it

i recomend you go to the page here and then sign in the registration website
http://www.limmatschwimmen.ch/index....&id=2&Itemid=3

i have my ticket and will be floating tomorrow

I did it 2 years ago, it was a fantastic experience. We were issues large yellow ducks and just let the river carry us through the city.

Re: Limmat schwimmen

Had great fun doing the Limmatschwimen today. So lucky with the weather too. It's about 2km down the river, and takes about an hour if you just bob along with the current.

Few hints if anyone fancies doing it next year. If poss book your tickets ahead of time. After you have your tickets you then have to queue to book the time slot you want. Based on what I saw today, it's worth getting an early slot. (We had friends who were booked in later and when they got to the finish it took them over an hour to queue up to get their belongings back.)

Re: flotation devices. There were plenty of other people using them today, I saw lilos, a surf board, blow up dolphins etc. You are issued with an inflatable rubber duckie before you enter the water, which you get to keep after...yey!

There were also a lot of people who joined in the swim who hadn't got tickets, they just entered the river from different points and joined in.

Overall it was a lot of fun and I'd recommend it if the weather is good again next year.

Re: Limmat schwimmen

it was an awesome weather... i also had a great time.. and now a i got my rubber duck jeje

and is true... get your start number in advance... makes the experience a lot better.

i got mine on the very day of the event... but i went early to get my number (10:55 and they open the door for registration at 11:15) .. and i hit the watter at 12:32 .. had no issues with the bag for the clothes and a lot of fun on river

Re: Limmat schwimmen

The 2012 Limmat Swim is scheduled for this Saturday (18 August). You can enter using this link.

I've just entered (as a fun swimmer). I didn't do it last year but I did hear from friends that it was great fun.

It would be great to know how people found this event last year. Was it fun? Any pieces of wisdom to share with the rest of us????

Re: Limmat schwimmen

it was great last year - really good fun - boiling hot day, so what better way to spend a part of than bobbing through the centre of Zurich on the cool river - looks like a scorcher again this year too

Re: Limmat schwimmen

Yea a group of us did it last year, and are doing it again this year. Was superb weather last year too, and looks set to be another good one this Saturday.

We did it officially, then after we'd finished and got back to central, we saw another few friends who'd had a different start time, and we jumped over and did it again.....was brill.

You'll have fun.

the length is 2000m (which equals 1300m in still water). the first batch of swimmers will be the ewz challenge, so those are the hardcore. the floaters (like me) will start after them. I intend to do the lazy route and let the river transport me, haha
