Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2011/2012

Has anyone gone to Gstaad? Some reports that hey have a few lifts open. Most of the resorts around interlaken are not open yet. Only 5cm on the Schilthorn....wild that there is so little snow at 2900 meters.

As it turns out, I quite enjoyed the pistes at Flumserberg today. The weather was gorgeous, and the slopes were quite ok for the most part (bottom was a bit muddy, but there was quality snow near the peak). Enough slopes were open that I didn't feel like I was skiing a partially-open mountain, either.

Thanks for the feedback!

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2011/2012

Yesterday in Lenzerheide. Good value for the price (33 CHF/day), but only two chair lifts (plus 3 T-bars) were opened. Snow mostly artificial, at the end of the day icy and some conifers have shown up.
They need a good 50 cm of snow to operate normally.

Verbier website says only one piste is open for the time being. Any insights as to when will they have the full scale opening? This weekend?
There was always more than 1 piste, 3 lifts so Lac de Veau & down to Ruinettes from Atles, a fair amount of skiing as you can go various ways especially if you ignore the closed signes!
Yesterday La Chaux Express opened giving access to La Chaux with 2 lifts down there with a much needed new resturant. The mountain resturants in Verbier are generally not that good except for Chez Danney & Carfour however both those are nearer the village.
Atlass 3 Chair opened giving the best quick turn around, I skied down to Verbier, it was rocky in places but way better than the end of last season when it was actually open!

If you head to the Grands Montets (Chamonix) there is roughly twice as much snow as anywhere else! No idea why, it's not unique and the reason I bought an apartment there in 1999.

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2011/2012

Just got back from a weekend in Warth (Vorarlberg, Austria). Most of the the runs were open, with reasonable coverage although some were a definitely bit patchy. I did find a lovely quiet run and was wondering why it was so empty when I turned a corner to discover that there was a lot of green field and not a lot of snow. It was by far the worst run I'd seen all weekend.

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2011/2012

Can anyone else give some good tips for places to ski this year. I have been waiting now for a month for Junfrau area to open (love it there and it is only 20 minutes away), but they have no snow, not even on the Schilthorn. I really want to take my daughter skiing for her first time and I am tired of waiting on snow that seems as if it will never come. Anyone ski in or around the Berner Oberland this year that could give some feedback on conditions? I can't wait for Grindelwald or Wengen because it seems like they will never open.

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2011/2012

Finally got to ski this last weekend, in Saas, and it was mighty fine. Plenty of snow, right down to Saas-Fee, although the runs weren't officially open all the way down. About a third of the runs were open and there was lots of untracked, ungroomed bits.

I had a bit of free time this Autumn and did a few personal projects I'd been working on. One was to put together a Swiss Winter Sports web site from all the notes and photos I had been collecting, and I finally got it together. The URL is http://www.swisswintersports.co.uk. It's a bit Basel-centric, because that's where I head out from, but I would appreciate anyone who can contribute - photos, tips, suggestions on improvements etc. Photos will get credited, as will any specific tips if you ask to be.

Look at all the pretty colors

Is that the terrorist threat color code warning?

So green is little to no threat or weather followed by yellow which is a slight threat, orange then red is a strong threat followed by purple which is an extreme threat.

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2011/2012

Grindelwald finally is opening for the season!!! Snow in the Berner Oberland down to under 1000 meters and plenty forecasted for this weekend. Looks like a great pre-christmas ski week and maybe even a white Christmas. (fingers crossed)

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 2011/2012

Hi folks,

Had a decent start to the season last week in Lenzerheid. Looks like Sunday is shaping up as a great day.

Any wisdom on where is best to head for tomorrow? Afraid that storm and wind might limit the selection.
