So a $2,000 fine, no ban and a lift of the probabtion which had been in force since 2009. That should teach her?

McEnroe was also gobby on the court, along with quite a few others. It's nothing to do with being "an african woman" (isn't Serena Williams an American, anyway?).

None of them were like that at the beginning of their careers. Why do they turn out like that? Don't you think their success might have gone a bit to their heads and they make themselves believe that they can act like a spoiled brat on the court?

Re: Shockingly bad form from Serena Williams

Can anyone summarise what happened in that point? I could only watch the clip an the phone and it wasn't clear what happened and why it should/shouldn't be a let.

Re: Shockingly bad form from Serena Williams

Making excuses for someone's behaviour on the grounds that she is 'African'? Isn't that making the presumption that 'Africans' are less capable of sporting behaviour than non-'Africans', thus perpetuating loathsome stereotypes about innocent savages?

Anyway, I couldn't make out a word she was saying, but she sounded very rude and ill-mannered. That, in itself, isn't always a bad thing, but she could have at least been more entertaining.

What kind of an insult is "you're ugly on the inside"? Someone send the silly girl a bit of Shakespeare...

..hmm, doesn't look like sports are about sportsmanship anymore, just about winning at any price...and the price runs in the millions and billions. It's the money that counts, the rest is window dressing.

Re: Shockingly bad form from Serena Williams

*kanye shrug* it happens everytime in sports. Great Sir Alex ferguson always has tasty words for officials when Manchester loses so does Monsieur Wenger. Any great sports person does. Who can forget Beckham's immortal words about the referee's mum. Oh classic. Oh Ronaldo's wink when he got rooney sent off.

They are all humans playing at the highest pinacles and their emotions are running wild at these various points.

There is more at stake in this day and age than when humans wore suits for most sports

Well, she seems to think she's done something great for women.....
"I just feel like the fact that I have to go through this is just an example for the next person that has emotions and that want to express themselves and want to be a strong woman. They're going to be allowed to do that because of today. Maybe it didn't work out for me, but it's going to work out for the next person."
http://www.espn.com/tennis/story/_/i...s-ramos-sexism
All of them are drama queens (well, a little bit) but Serena succeeded in making Osaka's victory seem a bit smaller. A real talent, I'd day...

Watching Djokovic vs. Del Potro in men's final is relaxing...

Re: Shockingly bad form from Serena Williams

It was a real shame for Osaka, she was amazing and you could see her moment in the sun got ruined.

Serena is the greatest female tennis player of all time, and it's not because she's a nice person on the court...she may be lovely off it, I'm not going to impugn her character, but on it, of course she is going to be fiercely competitive and try everything to turn games in her favour.

The umpire has form for calling violations - Nadal now refuses to be refereed by him, for example, but I think he got it right. The first violation for coaching was correct (Serena's coach admitted he was doing it!), the second for racquet abuse, also clearly correct. I think the third was justified too - Serena called him a thief and blatantly lied about the coaching (which I believe she should apologise for, that was the worst thing she did imho).

Was there an element of sexism? Perhaps - there certainly are different rules for women and men still lurking in the tour - however this was not the best instance for proving sexism as she was bang out of order all 3 times.

I 100% agree to your summary, except that I honestly don't see the sexism. Serena broke the rules three times, got a correct decisions, lies about what happened and makes wild complains along the line of "only because I am a woman" - which is outright bullshit.

Her comeback this year was amazing and I understand that a true champion gets a bit of extra tolerance. But this just isn't right. The WTA might want to look into the coaching rule, but they should not say it out loud just because she got a penalty. They should demand a clear apology and nothing else. Both to the ref and Ms Osaka for her unnecessary theater.
