The Williams sisters have a long history of poor sportsmanship, this is nothing new really...The 'This is America' comment was particularly amusing if not xenophobic

Re: Shockingly bad form from Serena Williams

Wait, really? Did you watch the match? I thought it was shockingly bad form by the chair ump in a relatively critical point in the match. I am not condoning Serena's behavior, but she is a heated player and I think any top tier player would have reacted like she did. In fact, they all used to and it was encouraged...but oh, wait, those were men, so of course it is acceptable then.

As a college tennis player in my former years, this situation is so common. The chair ump had discretion and she made a mountain out of a mole hill.

It's in the rules, listen to the post match commentaries & analysis from the experts...It was well within the umpire's right

Nice to skirt the ridiculous insults flung at the umpire by Serena, as well

Heated player is another way of saying a poor sport, she's a poor sport...Let's not white wash it

And as I mentioned before, this is hardly an isolated incident with Serena...Even from a young age, she has shown little in the way of sportsmanship...Google it, she has plenty of incidents

Yes you are right (duh)--she had the right to take the point. But as Serena said, it was also within the ump's right to replay the point. It has to do with "intention", and honestly I don't think Serena was "intending" to be disruptive. She hit a clear winner. Stoser never had a chance to reach that ball.

And I am also aware that Serena isn't know for her perfect sportsmanship on the court--in the past, she has had plenty of incidents. But she has also grown up. And rarely has she had an issue in the recent past with players...the players like her. Intensity on the court does not equal poor sport.

Her outburst on losing the point is one thing, but her ugly rant during the break goes beyond reasonable behavior. Footballers have received match bans for far less.

In the telecast, Mary Joe Fernandez came on air and explained the ruling & what the tournament referee ruled, it was the right call...Duh

1. Serena has a long history of poor sportsmanship...Sportsmanship is not defined by how you conduct yourself when things are going well or you're winning...She has rarely shown poise in defeat...There are countless examples
2. She showed terrible behaviour in how she berated the umpire, telling her she was unattractive, tried to screw me, threatening her to not look at her, etc...I mean it was all just pathetic
3. Never an apology, even once she had time to collect herself in the post pressy...Yet zero responsibility for her actions, more lack of class

It is what it is, none of it surprised me...Leopard doesn't change their spots, etc...Moreover, the 'This is America' was outright ridiculous from her at a foreign umpire...It smacked of xenophobia

You misunderstood what Serena was saying in this case. She was arguing her right to free speech (hence, the phrase "last time I checked, this was America" insinuating that she can say what she wants); she was not telling the chair ump to go back to where she came from.

Re: Shockingly bad form from Serena Williams

I don't agree with the way she conduced herself. She really should just be quiet & move on. We all know she's not like that.

But anyway FC, she said "you are unattractive inside" which means she felt her call was malicious. Not that the chair ump is ugly. And she said "this is america" in terms of that fact that she is "allowed to express herself" not in relation to the ump being foreign.

She already is acting badly all by herself. Let's not make it look worse than it is.

Anyway, not that this is excusing anything, but the sisters are quite stressed out year. On a positive note, her outfit was rocking.

ETA: JLF beat me too it!

She said the following:

1) "Aren't you the one who screwed me over the last time here?" - wrong umpire
2) "You have it out for me...I promise you, that's not cool"
3) "If you're walking down the hall, look the other way because you're out of control"
4) "You're totally out of control, you're a hater, you're unattractive...inside"
5) "Who would do such a thing...And I never complain"
6) "Wow, what a loser"
7) "Give me a code violation because I express my opinion, we're in America last time I checked"
8) "Am I going to get a violation for getting a water?"
9) "Don't even look at me, I promise you...because I am not the one"
10) "Don't...look...my...way"

The 'This is America' comment was absolutely boorish, arrogant & xenophobic...They're playing in America, obviously, since it is the US Open...I mean, was Serena confused or thinking the umpire was confused as to where they were?...And she's playing in a tennis tournament final that is sanctioned by the tennis governing bodies, in accordance with the rules of the sport...Code violations are awarded for behaviour or outbursts that violated those codes of conduct, regardless of whether 'This is America'...Add to it that the umpire is Greek and it played like the lovely advertisement for American arrogance that it was

I merely pointed out that this is not an isolated incident, there are countless incidents of Serena's boorish behaviour and poor sportsmanship...There was even a time where many members of the women's tour spoke openly about how the sisters simply had alienated themselves from other members on the tour - there had been a self imposed barrier from the Williams

In this day & age, sportsmanship or a lack there of shouldn't be swept under the proverbial rug...No amount of smiling for photos afterwards makes up for it...Particularly when she had ample time to collect herself in the pressy after the match and actually apologize...Something she never did

Re: Shockingly bad form from Serena Williams

We've already agreed that she behaved (or behaves, whatever) badly. No need for a transcription. But thanks.

The "we are in America. I can express myself" comment is not xenophobic. People in America say it all the time to refer to their right to free speech. It's said so often as to be meaningless. Again, you can say it's boorish if you want. To say it's xenophobic is just not correct. It has nothing to do with the ump being foreign. Actually, it has nothing to do with the ump at all. It has to do with her right to say what she wants.

Now, we can discuss whether she should (or does) have this right on the court if we want. However, she's not the first (nor last) bratty tennis player. What's the name of king of the bratty tennis players?

Which one? Are you are talking Johnny Mac (i.e., Jon McEnroe)? He ranks highest on my list.

Yeah, I don't agree Mia and most of the press/media has seen it for what I've described it as

Who can forget this gem from Serena just 2 years ago:

Quote:
I swear to God I’ll take this ball and shove it down your throat! Do you hear me? I swear to God. You better be glad–you better be glad that I’m not, I swear.

But in other news.... First time an Aussie has won that Open in my life time.

Good on Sam, I just feel a little bad for her that even though she won fair and square, the attention has been detracted.
