Re: Vibram Five Finger Shoes

Just out of curiosity, how do you run downhill in V5fs?

I live on a hillside, so either way I will be running downhill for some time. Going up is no issue as I land on my forefoot (heels don't touch ground) but being a rather heavy "heel lander" when going down, it seems painful when I would be running in minimalist shoes. Until now this has stopped me from buying V5fs.

EDIT: to explain, I tried the forefoot strike thing going downhill but kept on picking up speed until I resembled a wheezing, uncontrollable mass of flying limbs thundering downhill at break neck speed. I guess the technique was all wrong

Natural running is the best description I've read. Forefoot strike and roll out onto the heel. Uphill your heels probably won't even touch the ground.

Running downhill is the trickiest bit of forefoot running to learn I reckon. Just let it flow. My rather skilled trainer (Hillseeker) says to let it flow as though you're running down a long flight of stairs, you just let your legs follow the descent and don't lean forwards as much, the rest is a matter of practice. Give it time, it all becomes second nature. I started this natural running thing last winter and wouldn't know how to heel strike now if I had to. It also helps to go barefoot as often as you can during times when you're not running, like at the gym, in and around the home and office and for short walks. I also work standing at my desk (one of those vertically adjustable ones), which I think assists stance when you're not training. Just my $ 0.02.

Re: Vibram Five Finger Shoes

Googled "Natural running" and found all kinds of references. Especially like Newton Running, so will do some research. I think I have picked up a few bad habits over the past decade that may be causing some of my knee pain. Great thread!

Good sites. Natural running, newton running, pose: A lot seems to be variations on the same thing, although some seem to go to great lengths to differentiate themselves from the others. I found a lot of good info and video clips here: http://www.vivobarefoot.com/eu/barefoot/

Re: Vibram Five Finger Shoes

Just wanted to post this one from the NY Times. It's a must read IMO, all about "The Once and Future Way to Run".

Check it out and share your thoughts here. I think that Christopher McDougall is simply awesome, his book changed the way I run today.

For the over seventies in front of the fireplace with dog? I don't think so. The irony is good though, have you ever considered stand-up?

Re: Vibram Five Finger Shoes

@dodgyken - I have been reading about the Pose Method and what Assassin recommended. Started my forefoot running today. Felt good but the calves are a bit sore and tight.

Any tips for my own reprogramming? I am not planning on buying minimalist shoes yet...

Thanks,

fduvall

How do you run?? If you heel strike - move to a forefoot strike. You don't need Vibrams for that.

The only thing that Vibrams will do is stop you heel striking - because if you do it hurts like hell!!!

And they aren't the only "barefoot" shoe - or minimalist shoe. There are Vivos, Merrell Baregrips and Inov-8 also offer some near minimalist shoes.

Running is a hugely interesting topic - and it is frightening just how many people use Orthotics to correct problems which have occurred because of running with bad form.

I have realised I am not a barefoot runner - on a good day I'm a minimalist runner. What I am, after 6 months of Vibrams/Vivos/Inov-8s, is a runner - reprogrammed.

Re: Vibram Five Finger Shoes

Swiss company taking V5Fs to the next level? I give you:

"furry sock shoes" http://www.barfuss-schnitt-schutz.de/

according to the company also designed for running. It really adds a touch of weirdness beyond V5Fs
