Winter Swimming in Lake Zurich

Lake Zurich is still 20 degrees- that's warmer than any other year as long as data is available online (5 years back). Although most pools are now closed, the opening of Seebad Utoquai has been extended to 2nd October 2011, so go and have a swim!

But why stop at the end of summer? The lake temperature typically drops very gradually, and if you go once or twice a week you can build up a tolerance to the decreasing water temperature. You'll come out of the water feeling stunningly alive, and you get a fantastic feeling where you can actively feel all the parts of your body at the same time (sure, they're there all the time, but can you actively feel them all right now?). There is no better way to end, or start, a day!

Last year we were swimming until December when we gave up as the lake dropped below 10 degrees. However, it's unwise to go it alone. Who out there will join me this year?

Practicalities: It is possible (or at least last year it was possible) to buy a "winterschwimmen" entry to Sauna Enge for CHF5, which allows you use of their changing rooms and showers (but not the actual sauna)- very civilised. I'm not talking about competitive swimming or about staying in the water for very long- just pottering about a bit to get that lovely refreshing feeling. Last year we were swimming for maybe 10-15 minutes or so in the autumn, but by December we were maybe only in for a few minutes. Safety always comes first.

I look forward to the thousands of replies from people interested in joining for this wonderful mood-enhancing activity! All without drugs!

Re: Winter Swimming in Lake Zurich

Sounds good - I am mad enough for that - I actually founds swimming in Zürichsee to be TOO warm at times this year. I will send you a PM.
I have always been a fan of cold water swimming since my Dad used for force us (me and my brothers) into the sea . . at night!.
I remember once, as a kid, we were on holiday in Eastbourne on the English south coast. My dad actually marched us down to the sea front in our dressing gowns and told us to get in. My Mum complained but Dad said something about character building.
I remember the people `promenading` along the sea front after their evening meals (it was almost dark being around 21:30), looking on with a mixture of astonishment and pity. Sounds awful I know - but what the hell? It didn`t do me any harm.
Brrrrrrrring it on!

Re: Winter Swimming in Lake Zurich

I did 5k in the lake today (based on my dodgy GPS watch). Went in where I live at Thalwil and headed towards Rapperswil. Not sure where I turned around, but the water was absolutely beautiful, and I passed by many (mostly older) Swiss folks who had swum out from their local entry point. I agree with greencelery that the lake is swimmable through at least the end of November - and this is coming from an Australian who is used to 20 degree plus ocean water

Re: Winter Swimming in Lake Zurich

I mean winter- it's a surprisingly pleasant activity!

Basher, I will send you a message at the end of this week if you're still interested.

Harry0, good to hear someone else is enjoying the swimming. Last year we found it easy until early November, after that it got a bit nippy- still pleasant but it requires a bit more care and you can't swim very far any more.

Anyone else?

Hi all - sounds good to me! Would be interested in getting some "dips" in for a few more months yeah. I've swam in very cold water, but really don't enjoy it when it drops down below about 12C, but think that still gives another few months before that.

PM me info when you're thinking of meeting up!

Cheers
GC

Re: Winter Swimming in Lake Zurich

Thanks! Hadn't spotted that thread. Will get back to you at the end of this week, but basically I would be hoping to go for a dip 1 to 2 times a week- it would need to be after work (could be at the lake by 5.45pm) or possibly very early in the morning, say 7.30 or so- though the disadvantage of the morning is that Enge is closed so there will be no showers to warm up in.

I am NOT a competitive or even a very good swimmer, so would be more splashing about than really swimming. However, I think we would be happy to play lifeguard to someone who wanted to stay in a little longer.

Re: Winter Swimming in Lake Zurich

Hello,

Utoquai is closing at the end of next week: is anybody interested in some winter swimming this year?

I am not a very good swimmer, but just like pottering about. Have been swimming a lot this year and am a little bereft at the though of not continuing, stumbled across this thread and thought it sounded fun. I'd be interested in joining if anyone is doing this this year. I work very near Seebad Enge, so could do mornings or lunchtimes easily.

Re: Winter Swimming in Lake Zurich

You should see some of the oldies up in Norway. 10 degrees nothing to them. OP bang on, you can build up your tolerance fairly quickly provided you don't have a coronary in the process

Re: Winter Swimming in Lake Zurich

Seebad Enge closes on the 16th September this year and reopens on 22nd September as the sauna.

Last year, we swam there throughout the winter, with only a 2 week break when the air temperature was REALLY icy. I guess we will try to do the same thing again this year, probably one or two lunchtimes a week, so send me a PM and we'll see about catching up.

It's a strange atmosphere there- everyone else goes for the (naked) sauna, but a few (clothed) swimmers are happily tolerated.

Re: Winter Swimming in Lake Zurich

Same deal this year:

Utoquai opening extended by at least 1 week until 2nd October (often they extend it by two weeks). Lake still 20 degrees. Enjoy beautiful swimming conditions without the crowds!

And I'm still up for meeting anyone who wants to keep going into the winter....

Dammit, totally missed that, are you swimming acriss the lake? every morning during the season there were a reasonable number swimming across from Utoquai to Enge and back again, often the same number swam back as swam out.

Re: Winter Swimming in Lake Zurich

You really don't need a Badi to swim in the lake, people just jump in from everywhere along the lakeshore. You can change in the restrooms of the Kiosk. No shower though.

My neighbour swims every day - come rain, come shine. She tells me you get used to it in no time. She just takes a bathrobe with her and walks home, as we live near the lake.

Lake Zurich has drinking-water quality, so you should be clean after a swim, not needing a shower :-)
