Where do you keep your bike trainer?

I do not have much experience with bike trainers but have a feeling that they make enough noise to cause neighbours to realize that there is life beyond their apartment.

Where do you place your bike trainer while using it? I live in middle of an apartment building. I am planning to buy a bike trainer (rear wheel mounted with electric resistance) for the very cold day training and only use it during noise tolerance timings. Do you think it will be a problem with the neighbours.

TIA.

Re: Where do you keep your bike trainer?

I keep mine in the cellar. I try to use it most days in the winter. For a while I kept it on the balcony but it got a bit cold training then...

Re: Where do you keep your bike trainer?

You can get a matt to put under the trainer and bike to reduce vibrations. We used one in our house - the bike was upstairs and even with the matt there you could feel and hear the vibrations - but it was much louder without the matt. If you're in a solid apartment block the floors will be much thicker than in a private home. You could always turn your music up really loud to drown out the trainer

You could store the trainers anywhere - they don't take up that much room. In a cellar, a closet, if your TV is on an angle - maybe the space behind it. Most of them fold down so possibly even under the bed, sofa or chair.

Like everyone else who has ever bought one of these, you'll stop using it after a very short time so it doesn't matter where you put it!

Re: Where do you keep your bike trainer?

Depends on the type you buy.

The wind ones tend to be the most noisy. Magnetic makes less noise. And some of the ones callled something "fluid" makes even less noise. As said before, the matt also helps.

Re: Where do you keep your bike trainer?

The fluid ones are significantly quieter than the wind ones, and quieter than the magnetic one I had 10 years ago (so not the most up-to-date magnetic trainer). If you use a rubber mat as well as the tyres sold for use on trainers than you should be fine with using it outside of quiet times. I don't have one of the tyres but I've been told that they help with noise.

I'm moving on Monday and I'm hoping to keep mine on the balcony for as long (or as cold) as possible. The cellar sounds like a good idea though.

I used to get really bored on mine until I started following structure programs. They really help you keep using the trainer. Once I get some basic fitness back I want to try a few of these.

Re: Where do you keep your bike trainer?

Funny you mention sufferfest. I was planning to download a few this weekend. A lot of people rave about them - and it is a hell of a lot cheaper than the tarx virtual trainer...

Don't use it any time your apartment contract says "no excessive noise" (i.e. not after 10 pm and between 12 and 2 at lunchtime). Just general commonsense should lead you in the right direction. Simples...
