I bought a great road bike from another EF'er a few months ago and have been doing the maintenance myself.
I recently decided that getting the gears to run right was beyond me although I had done a fair amount of work on them. Over-tinkering to be honest.
I was shying away from taking it to a bike shop because I didn't want to spend a third of the cost of the bike on a service but I decided it was getting to be worth it instead of having the gears drive me mad.
I found a great bike shop in Wädenswil -

60CHF for a service, the guy immediately told me why the gears were off and also gave the bike a scan to tell me what he recommended be replaced.
As soon as he told me that the rear pads needed replacing but the front ones were OK I knew he wasn't going to gouge me.
I picked it up 24 hours later for a total cost of 97CHF for the service, gear cable and brake pad replacement, switching the seat post with one I brought to the shop and wheel centreing.
I thought it was a good deal as Move On bikes in Adliswil charge 200CHF for a basic service.
I took the bike for a ride yesterday and it's like a new bike.
After taking so long to bring the bike to a bike shop I am delighted to have found them.
I emailed them first to get the price, the owner's son replied in English but the main guy doesn't speak much. His English and my German overlapped OK and he made sure I understood what he was going to do.
They have a huge range of bikes, spares and clothing. I have no need to go to Velo Plus again and can even tick off a few Wiggle purchases.
