Re: Cricket In Zug / Switzerland

Hello!

I would like to join a cricket club, preferably in Zug. Any Zug CC members here? May I request contact details.

I am willing to travel to Luzern or Zurich to play as well.

Thank you.

From History of cricket in Switzerland:
Quote:
Although, as the water colour of "Vue de la Ville de Genève et de Plein-Palais (Florence 1769-1845)" from 1817 by Giovanni Salucci, cricket has been played in Geneva since at least 1817, the inaugural meeting of the first cricket association was held on 9 March 1980 at the Australian Embassy in Bern.

Re: Cricket In Zug / Switzerland

I'm guessing Giovanni never quite made it to the pantheon of watercolour greats. His attention to detail is a little lacking (the wickets appear to be about three quarters of a metre wide, for example) and his depth of field perception is, um, interesting ... apparently the pitch was located way off centre of the oval, with an extremely short leg boundary (if the facing batsman is left-handed and what marginally appears to be an umpire is standing at square leg).

But yes, it's interesting to see that cricket was played in Switzerland (in the French part, no less!) so long ago. Perhaps not so surprising if you believe the theory that cricket originated in France.

Re: Cricket In Zug / Switzerland

From British and American Visitors in Switzerland: History of Tourism in Switzerland:

Quote:
By 1903, there are English churches at: Arolla, Adelboden, Andermatt, Les Avants, Ballaigues, Beatenberg, Bex, Champery, Chandolin, Chateau d'Oex, Clarens, Davos, Les Diablerets, Eggishorn, Gletsch, Glion, Grindelwald, Interlaken, Leukerbad, Leysin, Locarno, Lucerne, Montreux, Neuchatel, Pully, Riffelalp, Saas-Fee, Samedan, Schinznach, St. Moritz, Tarasp, Thun, Verbier, Vevey, Villars, Wengen and Zermatt.
So they probably brought their games with them, as well as their Tea Rooms (pronounced, as I recall, thé a Rome in French ).

Played as a kid but never played a game since, just a knock about with the kids.
Would love to give it a bash again.

With a bit of afternoon tea and cakes followed by the customary liquid refreshments at EOP.

My OH thinks Cricket is one of the most boring games ever. Never will understand women!

Re: Cricket In Zug / Switzerland

Hello guys, Are you still playing the league matches? I am more than interested to join. Though I live in Zurich, but willing to travel to Zug/Luzerne or nearby places for that matter.

Chap with disciplined batting skills, decent medium pace bowler and yeah have had done the gloves behind the stumps I would say better than what I thought, till state/university level.
