Importing hiking maps (swisstopo) into Google Earth (kml)

Hi all,

Does anyone know of a tool or website that allows you to import swisstopo topographic maps (e.g. viewable at http://map.wanderland.ch/ and http://map.geo.admin.ch/) into Google Earth (e.g. as a kml file)? I find it really useful for planning hikes to see the topographic maps as an overlay in 3D in Google Earth.

Previously I've always used www.mapplus.ch, but this functionality seems to have been removed recently due to a legal dispute (details here).

Cheers,
Roy

Just buy SwissTopo - well worth the investment in my view. You can generate lovely pictures of the height change - as well as full GPX files + others.

Thanks. Could you be more specific? Are you referring to printed maps, a software package, or an online service? URL?

Still, it would be nice to avoid paying for SwissTopo, seeing as we've all already paid tax for it... (if I understand correctly).

You can buy the whole of Switzerland on 1 DVD - install it on your PC (or Mac - it works on both) - and away you go. You can plot routes - and it will save them as GPX (and other files).

Examples are here:

You can buy it online from the GeoAdmin shop (49chf + 6chf delivery) or from Sportx in Zurich (next to Migros City)

Ah ok thanks. Apparently, "The Swiss Map products are no longer available and will be replaced at the end of june 2011 by Swiss Map online", which has a price of "CHF 49.00 for the first year, annual subscription CHF 29.00".

However,
  1. The description does not say it can export to a kml/kmz overlay (do you know if it can?), and
  2. I don't use Windows or Mac OS (Linux)

So I'm not sure that's going to work for me...

The FAQ says GPX export and Windows/Mac only.
